Her parents were Robert Crosbie and Martha Emma Fielding. Elva married Stanley Ridges Dean in Logan, Utah. Elva Crosbie Dean died on October 18, 1998 in Orem, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ Elva Crosbie Dean. My interest in genealogy and family history began about the year 1919 when I was a student at Brigham Young High School in Provo, Utah. We were required to take a Theology class. There were a number of religion classes, one being genealogy, taught by Professor E. D. Partridge. This was my selection for the year. Brother Partridge was an inspiring teacher. He impressed me very much with the importance of making a record of our ancestors. It was later that I decided to include histories and stories of these family members, not just names and dates. My first step was to ask my mother, Martha Fielding Crosbie, born 1881, for information. She told me what she knew, but she didn’t know many dates. Her mother, Grandma Fielding, had an excellent memory for family dates and information. Grandma Fielding was able to give me more on the Fielding and Whittle lines. She said her father, James Whittle, had brought from England a record of his family, and of his wife, Mary Holden, also. He gave her this record and now I have it. The record includes the parents and their immediate families, dates and their L. D. S. temple work records, patriarchal blessings of some of the members of the Whittle family. This was the only written record of any kind in the family. My father was Robert Crosbie, born 1879. There wasn’t even that much of a record on my father’s side, Crosbie’s and Waldie’s. My father and mother were able to give me some information on his family so I was able to make my start on my family tree. The next few years were taken up with school, marriage, and children. In 1930 I was divorced and moved with my children back to my parent’s home in Provo. Very little was accomplished in genealogy during this time but it was always on my mind. Whenever I made inquiries, the word seemed to be that we should hire a researcher, send money to Scotland or England. We had no family organization. We were too few and not able to do it on our own, so time went by. About 1938, in a Sunday School Genealogy class, a substitute teacher, who was much endowed with a love of his ancestors through the teaching of his dear father, recently deceased, told us of the great advantage of writing to every relative we had and visiting those we could to gather all the information they might be able to give us. I decided I would do this. I chose to start with the Waldie family, as this was the only line on which nothing had been done. There were Mormon grandparents on each of the three lines, Crosbie, Fielding, and Whittle, but none on the Waldie line, which seemed to be the reason for the lack. This turned out to be a very fascinating endeavor and I as still “hooked” on it. From 1953 to 1970 I worked as Reference librarian at the University of Utah library and then Manuscripts Librarian. As I became better acquainted with the collection and learned of the use of the library, I was able to research material for historical background. During those years and since, I have taken genealogical classes at BYU and have spent many hours at the Utah Genealogical Society in Salt Lake City, Utah. I now keep in touch, by correspondence, with several relatives. See website: http://hughadamson.com/Crosbie/FilesHistory/Crosbie%20Waldie%20Fielding%20Whittle%20Story.pdf
