University, Book 9, page 88. ~ ~ ~ ~ John Starr Swenson was born March 27, 1900. He married Marva Carter. He died on December 28, 1977. ~ ~ ~ ~ His parents were John C. Swensen (Swenson), born February 4, 1869 [BYA High School 1888, BYA Collegiate 1900], married Margaret Davies (Davis) Swensen. John originally used the -SON spelling, but later in life he decided it would be better to use the -SEN spelling. John and Margaret had ten children; five of the children continued with the -SON spelling, but the other five changed and used the -SEN spelling. Taylor; and Ruth Elaine Taylor (Kartchner). Elton married Ethel Lulu Scott on March 31, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Died December 17, 1992 in Lakeview, Utah. Interment, Provo City Cemetery, Block 3 Lot 139. World War I Army Veteran. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Elton LeRoy Taylor died Thursday, December 17, 1992 at his home in Lakeview, Utah, at the age of 92. He was born in Provo, Utah, June 22, 1900, the son of Arthur Nichols and Maria Dixon Taylor. He was raised in Provo and graduated from B.Y. High School. He then attended Brigham Young University and Utah State University. He completed military service in the U.S. Army in 1918. He served an LDS mission under President B.H. Roberts in the Eastern States Mission. After returning, he married Ethel Lulu Scott in the Salt Lake Temple in 1926; Ethel passed away in 1991. They were the parents of Julia T. Anderson (Kenneth) of Provo; James S. Taylor of Orem, Utah; Paul S. Taylor of Golden, Colorado; and Louise T. Woodruff (Clfford) of Price, Utah. Elton's posterity includes 25 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren. His surviving sisters, Alice T. Nelson, and Ruth T. Kartchner, and brother, Clarence D. Taylor, live in Provo. In 1929, Elton moved to Price, Utah to manage the family furniture business, Dixon-Taylor-Russell Co. He was a civic and religious leader in Carbon and Emery counties for over 30 years, serving as President of the Carbon Stake for 17 years, and working actively in the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. Retiring to Lakeview in 1960, Elton was able to fulfill his lifelong desire to farm and raise cattle. He was a temple worker for a number of years at the recommend desk of the Provo Temple, and served many years as Patriarch of the Sharon West and Lakeview stakes. Elton pursued a lifelong passion with travel and history, traveling extensively throughout the U.S. and many foreign countries. He was especially well-versed in the history of Utah Lake, surrounding Utah Valley, and Central and Southern Utah. Funeral services were held Monday, December 21, 1992, in Lakeview. University, Book 10, page 132. ~ ~ ~ ~ John Thomas Wahlquist, born September 10, 1898 at Heber City, Utah. His parents were Charles John Wahlquist & Elizabeth Campbell Wahlquist. He married Grace Elvira Olsen Dorius on August 30, 1923 in Salt Lake City, Utah. John Thomas Wahlquist died November 28, 1990. ~ ~ ~ ~ Biographical Sketch: John T. Wahlquist served as a member of the Deseret Sunday School Union Board beginning in 1932. While attending the University of Cincinnati in 1929-1930 he was a teacher in the M. I. A. of the Cincinnati Branch of the Church. After his return home he acted as a member of the Sunday School superintendency of the [University of Utah] University Ward in 1930-1931, and became a member of the general board of the Deseret Sunday School Union in 1933. He received his education in the public schools of Heber City and Provo, at Wasatch High School, and at B.Y.U. High School in Provo. In 1921 he received a B.S. degree at BYU, followed by an M.S. from the University of Utah, and a PhD in 1930 from the University of Cincinnati. He was a teacher by profession, working in the public schools of Uintah County, Utah, in 1918-1920; in Weber County in 1920-1922, at Ogden Senior High School in 1923-1924, at the University of Utah as an instructor in 1921-1928, as assistant professor in 1930-1932, as associate professor in 1932-1935, and then as a professor. He became a director of the Stewart Training School at the University of Utah beginning in 1932. He served as a visiting professor at the University of Cincinnati during the summers of 1931 and 1932 and at George Washington University at Washington, D.C., during the summer of 1935. He has been a contributor to professional journals and to L.D.S. Church publications ("Instructor," "Children's Friend," "Relief Society Magazine," etc.) He was the author of "Teaching as Director of Activities" (official teacher-training text) and "Status of Junior College Instructor," U.S. Office of Education, in 1931. On August 30, 1923, Dr. Wahlquist married Grace Dorius of Ephraim, Utah, and they had two sons: Don Dorius Wahlquist and Carl Dorius Wahlquist. Wahlquist, President of San Jose State University (1952-1964). Born in Utah in 1899, John T. Wahlquist completed high school at Brigham Young University High School in the Class of 1918. He earned his bachelor's degree, secondary teaching credential, school administrative credential and M.S. in educational administration at the University of Utah, and a Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati in 1930. Wahlquist established general education course requirements, promoted graduate programs, and established summer institutes, community business workshops and federally-sponsored endeavors, namely the Peace Corps training program -- a ten-week specialized course that brought students from around the country.
