Olson, Maurine

Olson, Maurine
Provo, Utah US

Maurine and Ben Bullock

BYH Class of 1915? Maurine Olson. ~ ~ ~ ~ Maurine Olson was born on December 9, 1897 in Springville, Utah to Edwin and Dora Lowry Olson. Her parents shared their duplex with her mother’s sister, Olive Lowry, and husband, George Edward Anderson, who was a well-known Latter-day Saint photographer. Maurine’s father ran the Reynolds General Store and participated in Anderson’s photography business, selling cameras and taking pictures for hire. Maurine’s grandparents lived in Manti where she visited them frequently until 1906 when her grandparents lived with her family because of her father’s mission to the northern states for two years. During her childhood, she attended Grant School in Manti which is now gone. In 1909, Maurine and her family moved to Provo where her father had set up his own photography studio, Olson and Hafen Photographers. While in Provo, she attended four different schools. After attending Brigham Young High School [BYH Class of 1915?], Maurine smoothly transitioned into taking classes at Brigham Young University. There, she took art and education teaching classes from Belle Spafford who later became the Relief Society General President for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and she attended with Ernest L. Wilkinson who later became the president of Brigham Young University. Maurine did not finish her college education because her family decided to move in 1921 to Long Beach, California to sell their grandfather’s bungalow which he left them. During her time in California until 1926, Maurine started working as a sales clerk at Bullocks and Hinks department stores even though her family returned to Utah in 1924. Maurine moved to Salt Lake City and started working at another department store, Auerbachs where she worked for many years. During that time, Maurine was able to take a trip east to visit church sites, go to three World’s Fairs, and travel in the south. During World War II, Maurine worked at Fort Douglas in the post office. After the war, she returned to working in Auerbachs. In 1958, Maurine met and married Ben Bullock at the age of 60 and they lived together for four years until his heart attack in 1962. Maurine continued to travel and work selling Avon products until she retired at age 84. Maurine died on March 20, 1997 in Provo, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER BIOGRAPHY: A professor at Brigham Young University, William G. Hartley, recorded approximately 20 interviews with Maurine in 1 to 2 hour intervals which he then transcribed. The transcription was given to Maurine and other family members to review, correct and return to him which he then turned into the book of her story. Included along with Maurine’s autobiography are short sketches of the lives of her family members including her mother’s parents, her grandfather, and her father. There are ten sections in the book with a varying number of sub-sections and each section is titled with a different time of her life: Starting the Century in Springville; Photographer’s Family in Provo; School days at B.Y. High and BYU; Adventurous Car Trip to California; Southern Californians, 1920-1922; Being on my own in Berkley; Young Adult in Salt Lake City; Living in the Avenues; The War Years, Forties, and Fifties; Marriage and Return to Provo. Because Maurine’s father was a photographer, Bullock has numerous photos of her childhood and adulthood included at the end of each section of the book. Also included among the pictures are some of her drawings and postcards. Maurine’s account gives a personal story about a century of change, recounting humorous stories of her family and covering important historical events. Source. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Maurine Olson Bullock, 99, our grandma Maurine, died March 20, 1997. She was born December 9, 1897 in Springville, Utah to Edwin Olson and Dora Lowry Olson. She married Benjamin Hart Bullock, March 13, 1958 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They had no children. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Ida and Joseph A. Norton, Salt Lake City; step grandchildren, Neil and Sharen Bullock, Provo; Hart and Janice Bullock, Centerville; David and Gail Bullock, Sandy; Beverly Jensen, Las Vegas, Nev.; Laurie Bullock, Provo; Jack and Colleen Hansen, San Jose, Calif.; Paul and Jane Hansen, San Jose, Calif.; 22 great-grandchildren; 29 great-great-grandchildren; five nieces and nephews and their families. She lived in Springville, Utah; Berkley, California; Salt Lake City and Provo, Utah. She was an active member of the LDS Church all of her life, and held many ward and stake positions. Maurine was employed at Auerbach's and Z.C.M.I. for many years. She moved to Provo after her marriage, and began selling Avon. At the age of 87, she finally decided it was time to retire. She was a wonderful woman with a remarkable memory, who was cheerful, alert, independent and involved with her family, friends, and church until shortly before her death. She will be greatly missed. Funeral services were held Monday, March 24, 1997 at the Provo 4th Ward LDS Chapel, 101 West 800 North, Provo. Her interment, Provo City Cemetery. [Deseret News, Saturday, March 22 1997]

Sauls served as Secretary to three BYU presidents, as a purchasing agent, and as Treasurer of BYU. ~ ~ ~ ~ Keifer Sauls became Secretary to BYU President Franklin S. Harris. From his observations as secretary, Sauls recounted Harris' vision and educational philosophy: "He immediately charted an ambitious course for the destiny of BYU as he envisioned it and set sail. I once heard a faculty member philosophize about a young man with grandiose plans; it was thought the young man's sail was too big for his rudder. President Harris's sail was big, but the rudder proved adequate. . . . Dr. Harris believed in a well-rounded education. He had one. He had a better working knowledge in more fields of learning than any person of my acquaintance. Though his major field was science, he loved the classics in literature, art, and music and knew of the accomplishments through the centuries of the great artists in these areas." ~ ~ ~ ~ Keifer Sauls also worked for BYU President Howard S.
