She married Charles William Mitchell [BYH Class of 1913] on October 17, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She died on January 17, 1993 in Provo, Utah. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Provo, Utah -- Mary LaReal Jones Mitchell, age 100, passed away Sunday, January 17, 1993 at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. LaReal was born in Provo on December 7, 1892 to Charles E. and Martha Jones. Two brothers, Alma and Gilbert, one sister, Martha Adelaide, proceeded her in death. Two sisters, Etta Jones of Provo, Utah, and Florence Barker of Evanston, Wyoming, are still living. LaReal attended Provo city schools; Franklin Elementary School, Brigham Young High School, the University of Utah, and Brigham Young University. She received a B.A. degree from Brigham Young University on June 2, 1922. She taught sixth grade at Franklin Elementary School and Salem, Utah. She taught speech at Spanish Fork High School. LaReal left for the Eastern States LDS Mission on July 26, 1922 and served under B. H. Roberts. September 23, 1923 was the 100th anniversary of Angel Moroni's visit to Joseph Smith and the LDS Church held a commemoratory conference on Hill Cumorah. President Heber J. Grant, President B.H. Roberts, James E. Talmadge, Rudger Clawson and Joseph Fielding Smith were the visiting authorities. An estimated crowd of 5,000 people attended. LaReal spoke on "Christ's Visit to the American Continent." She always remembered this as a great inspirational honor. LaReal married Charles William Mitchell in the Salt Lake Temple on October 27, 1927. The couple had three children: Nadene Pettijohn, Alaska; Arla Mitchell, Provo, Utah; and Charles Ray Mitchell, deceased. LaReal had seven grandchildren and she now has 24 great grandchildren. LaReal actively participated in the LDS Church. She helped organize the first Junior Sunday School in the Provo Third Ward and served as Junior Sunday School coordinator for ten years. She was on the Young Women's Stake Board, a Relief Society teacher for 20 years, a Relief Society secretary for six years, a visiting teacher for over 6 years, ward librarian, and a choir member. LaReal loved temple work and completed well over 3,000 endowments. She was past president of the Yesharah organization and past president of the Provo Camp of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. LaReal celebrated her 100th birthday on December 7, 1992. We wish to thank her many friends, Daughter of the Utah Pioneers, and relatives who made this a wonderful occasion. We also wish to thank Governor Norman Bangerter, Mayor Joseph Jenkins, and Representative Bill Orton for their congratulatory messages. Her parents were Charles William Love and Sarah Jane Evans Love. Alta married James Horace Bean on October 7, 1915 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born on July 13, 1890 in American Fork, Utah. He died on January 28, 1974 in Orem, Utah. His parents were James William Bean and Pauline Emelie Hardy Bean. Alta Love Bean died in Provo, Utah on July 11, 1984. Her interment, Provo, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ THEIR SON'S OBITUARY: James "Evan" Bean beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend died peacefully October 15, 2003 surrounded by his family. He leaves a valiant legacy of unwavering faith, dedication to the path of truth, devotion and love to family and friends and a life of selfless service. He was born May 5, 1931 in Provo, Utah to James Horace and Alta Love Bean [BYH Class of 1914]. Evan graduated from Lincoln High and BYU. He served an LDS mission to the Great Lakes area. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Married Virginia Cech in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Evan was a music educator in Northern Arizona, Manti and Davis County. He was currently employed with World Group Securities as Branch Manager. Retired member of Tabernacle Choir after 18 years. Then served as a Temple Square usher with Virginia. Survived by his wife; son, James E. (Christina) Bean, Jr.; daughters, Audrey (James) Allison, Karen (James Spencer) Bean, Evelyn (James) Sheehan; 14 adoring grandchildren; brother, Hardy (Maridean) Bean and numerous friends. Preceded in death by parents, sister, June and Robert Gammell and sister, Dorothy Bean. University, Book 8, page 261. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Dr. Milton Marshall, Death Claims Educator, School Board President. ~ ~ Dr. Milton Marshall, 66, dedicated teacher and scientist, died Saturday in the Utah Valley Hospital of what was believed to have been a heart attack which struck him the previous day. He had been a member of the Brigham Young University teaching staff since 1919 and was serving as president of the Provo School District Board of Education, of which he had been a member for 24 years. He was born May 10, 1895 in Vernal, Utah, a son of James and Mary Robinson Marshall. He married Julia Taylor on September 7, 1918, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a recipient of the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Teaching Award for 1961 at BYU for his many years as a teacher of Mathematics and Physics at that institution, where he had served as Chairman of both the Physics and Mathematics departments. He was honored by his scientific colleagues as Chairman of the American Society for Metals, and was a member of the American Physical Society, American Mathematics Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science and American Foundry Society and was the first secretary of the BYU chapter of Sigma XI. In addition to his teaching duties at the University, he served on the Athletic Council and the Campus Planning Committee and as Chairman of the BYU Employees Credit Union. For many years he has been a consultant for the Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Company of Provo and has done inspection work for testing laboratories throughout the nation. He served as a cadet in World War I and during World Was II he taught the men of the Army Specialized Training Program at BYU. He also taught a course in instrumentation for Geneva Steel. He received his elementary and high school education in Vernal and BY High School, where he graduated in the Class of 1914. He obtained his bachelor of Arts degree at Brigham Young University in 1918 and obtained his Ph.D. degree at the University of Chicago in 1924. He was also active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had served as Superintendent of Sunday School and MIA and as a teacher in various organizations. His hobbies were photography, metal working and mineral and gem collecting. He had an outstanding collection of fluorescent materials which had been displayed at various gem shows. He is survived by his wife, Julia, of Provo, Utah; four sons and one daughter, Dr. John T. Marshall of Springville, Utah; Dr. Robert T. Marshall of Wilmette, Illinois; Mrs. E. M. (Marie - BYH Class of 1943) Miner of Canoga Park, California; Dr. Paul T. Marshall of Henderson, Nevada, and Mark T. Marshall of Tarzana, California. In addition he is survived by 17 grandchildren, and one brother and five sisters, James Earl Marshall of Nampa, Idaho, Mrs. Bud (Ethel) Conner of Pavillion, Wyoming; Mrs. Reuben (Frances) Hartle, Mrs. Merle Merrill and Mrs. Larvin (Ellen) Atwood, all of Vernal, Utah, and Mrs. Burnell (Vera) Hatch of Provo, Utah. Funeral services were held at Berg Drawing Room Chapel in Provo on Wednesday, September 13, 1961, with Arnold N. Davis, bishop of the Provo First Ward, officiating.
