Jensen. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Richard Jennings Shumway, beloved son, brother, husband, father, and grandpa, returned to his Heavenly Father on July 24, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loved ones in his final hours. He will be missed by all who knew him, but we know that he is at peace and will lovingly await our return to be with him. Rick was born on November 18, 1950 in Provo, Utah to R. Phil and Nelda Moon Shumway. He attended schools in both Provo and Orem, Utah. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sweden from 1969-1971. He said that a day never passed that he did not remember his sweet experiences there. He graduated from BYU with a B.A. in History, an M.A. in Community Education, and also held a post-graduate certificate in Gerontology. He spent his professional career in long-term care administration, and touched the lives of many. He loved the residents, their families and staff that he interacted with, and always viewed his career as an opportunity to serve others. Rick was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He always made the Lord his first priority, and served his Heavenly Father faithfully in numerous capacities. Through each of these opportunities, he impacted many. Whether as a missionary, the Blazer Scout leader, a teacher in Primary, the ward choir director, or a member of the bishopric, he loved each opportunity that he was given. Rick was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He married Carolyn T. Jensen in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity on June 15, 1979. Together they were blessed with three children: Richard Phil Shumway; Cameron Craig Shumway; and Mary Katherine (Katie) Shumway. His family brought him the greatest joys of his life. He cherished his time with his two beloved grandsons, Jakie and Ricky. They always brought a sweet smile to his face, and he to theirs. Rick is survived by his wife Carolyn, his children: Rick (Sarah) Shumway, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Cameron and Katie Shumway, Provo, Utah; his grandchildren Jacob Cameron and Richard Jennings Shumway, (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania); his mother Nelda Shumway, Orem, Utah; brothers Scott (Anne) Shumway, Matt (Becky) Shumway, and Jim (Jill) Shumway, and sisters Linda Shumway and Hallie Shumway Crockett. He was preceded in death by his mentor and father, Phil and his brother-in-law, Lynn Crockett. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 31, 2009 at the Grandview South Stake Center, 1122 N. Grand Ave., Provo. Friends may call at the church Thursday, July 30 from 6-8 p.m. and from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment in the Provo City Cemetery will follow. Class of 1969, graduated in 1968. Lesley Strong. Lesley graduated as a junior and was the Valedictorian for the graduating juniors. She graduated from Brigham Young University in 1971 with a BS in Elementary Education and Minor in History. She began her teaching career with the Salt Lake City School District in 1972. She earned an MA in Education from Westminster College in 1980, and an administrative degree from the University of Utah in 1992. She currently serves as the Executive Director of Curriculum and Professional Development in the Salt Lake City School District. Her parents are Robert Q. Strong and Beth C. Strong. She has three sisters; Carol Strong Lowe (BYH Class of 1971), Diane Strong Krause (Larry)(BYH Class of 1972) and Jeanne Strong Schaerrer (Mark). Her parents have six children: Marilyn Swensen [BYH Class of 1956] (Ted) Hess, of Nampa, Idaho; A. John Swensen [BYH Class of 1957 -- twin], of Lehi, Utah; Donald G. (Louise) Swensen [BYH Class of 1957 -- twin], of Sandy, Utah; Philip R. (Dana) Swensen [BYH Class of 1962], of Hyde Park, Utah; Margaret "Margie" Swensen [BYH Class of 1965] (Dennis) Lifferth of Centerville, Utah; and Kathryn Swensen [BYH Class of 1969] (Paul) Graf of Santa Clara, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: St. George, Utah - Kathryn Swensen Graf, age 59, passed away April 16, 2010, in St. George, Utah. She was born April 11, 1951 to Albert Donald Swensen and Jennie Romney Swensen. She married Paul Fenwick Graf in the Salt Lake City Utah Temple on August 13, 1976. Kathy was born and raised in Provo, Utah. She attended Wasatch Elementary, BY High and after BY High closed in 1968, graduated from Provo High School in 1969. She graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a teaching certificate. She was a BYU folk dancer and toured Europe with them. She taught Kindergarten and First Grade at Maeser Elementary School in Provo, Utah. When her first child was born she retired from school teaching and became a full-time mother and homemaker. She has been engaged in that capacity ever since. She created in her home a place of peace and refuge and all who entered enjoyed the feeling. Her children and husband know they are loved and cared for. She supported her husband in all his endeavors. She was a gracious hostess. She is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints and has served in many capacities. She served in the ward as Junior Sunday School Coordinator, Primary teacher and counselor in the presidency, Young Women's President, counselor and advisor, Relief Society President and counselor, and in the stake as a counselor in both the Stake Primary Presidency and Stake Relief Society Presidency. She was a family history consultant. She served on scout committees, as a unit commissioner, and was Woodbadge trained. She attended many recitals, ball games, performances and girls camps. She bottled her own fruit, made excellent blackberry and strawberry jam, sewed, crocheted, quilted, enjoyed being at the temple and working there, organized her family history, located and organized many old family photos, always had a subtle sense of humor about life and her part in it, enjoyed fresh cut flowers in her home, welcomed her children's friends into her home and always kept the refrigerator full to feed them, and was always reading a good book, looked forward to outings with her sisters and friends whom she loved and cherished. Her testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ is reflected in her family and dedicated life of service. She is survived by her husband, Paul Fenwick Graf of Santa Clara; children: Marianne Graf of Salt Lake City, Utah; Jennie Graf (Cory) Tanner of Lambertville, New Jersey; John F. Graf of Santa Clara, Utah, Brian R. (Ann) Graf of Orem, Utah, Rebecca Graf of Provo, Utah, and grandson, Jacob Tanner; she is also survived by her stepmother, Marjorie Swensen of Provo, Utah, and siblings, Marilyn (Ted) Hess of Nampa, Idaho, Donald (Louise) Swensen, of Sandy, Utah, John Swensen of Lehi, Utah, Philip (Dana) Swensen of Hyde Park, Utah, Margaret Swensen(Dennis) Lifferth of Centerville, Utah. She is preceded in death by her parents, Albert Donald Swensen and Jennie Romney Swensen, and her sister in law, Markay Bruggeman Swensen. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Santa Clara LDS Stake Center, 1706 Desert Dawn Dr., Santa Clara, Utah. Visitations will be held Tuesday, April 20th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. Class of 1969. Jim Watts. HIS OBITUARY: James Doyle Watts, 46, of Sonora, California, born March 1, 1951, died Saturday, February 7, 1998, at his home. Mr. Watts was a native of Provo, Utah. Jim lived in Sonora for nine years. He was a computer program manager with Sun Microsystems for 12 years. He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sonora First Ward. He is survived by his children, James D. Watts, Thomas J. Watts, William K. Watts, Heather L. Watts, Carol A. Watts, Lisa M. Watts and Elizabeth A. Watts, all of Sonora, Melinda Watts Garren of Rexburg, Idaho; his father, Verdun A. Watts, Sr., of Utah; a brother, Verdun A. Watts, Jr. of New York; and sisters, Edyth Watts Meridith and Connie Watts Post, both of California. He was predeceased by his sister, Carolyn Watts Sargent.
