Tom Ryan

Class of 1953. Tom Ryan. Senior Class President / Governor. Basketball, Lettermen, Childrens' Theater, Thespians, Graduation Committee. ~ ~ ~ ~ Thomas R. Ryan was born on October 9, 1935, in Greeley, Colorado. His parents were Thomas Richard Ryan and Grace K. Ryan. He attended schools in Colorado, including his first years in high school in Denver. He came to Brigham Young High School in his junior year, where he was liked so well he was elected president of his senior class for the coming year in 1953. He liked to remember that he got into hot water for posting Adlai Stevenson posters at the school in the year when Eisenhower won the presidency. He married briefly in the 1970s, but had no children. He died at home in Hornsey Rise, London, UK on April 14, 2007. At his request, his ashes were scattered at Stratford-upon-Avon, England, Shakespeare's birthplace. His friends honored his wishes in the Holy Trinity Churchyard, the church where Shakespeare's family tomb is located. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: My partner Tom Ryan, who has died of cancer aged 71, was an inspirational teacher, dramaturge and writer. Many of the generation now making their way in TV, radio and the stage can point to him as a supportive influence. He was known for his kindness and insisted on the importance of structure in playwriting and the need for students to analyse plays. For 14 years, he ran a playreading workshop, ranging from the Greeks through Shakespeare (Tom's great passion) to contemporary works. Those who attended received an education rare in its breadth. Tom taught with the playwright Bernard Kops for many years. They had different teaching styles, and this could sometimes lead to fireworks, but the workshops were noted for their creativity. Tom also taught at the City Lit adult education college in London and for a time was literary adviser to Polka Children's Theatre. Born in Colorado, he studied directing with Jose Quintero in New York, worked with Tyrone Guthrie, and was a stage manager at Shakespeare festivals in Colorado, Oregon and Connecticut in the late 1950s to mid-1960s. He taught in American universities for many years. In 1984 he came to Britain and worked as a script reader for the National Theatre, RSC and Royal Court, and was flatmates with the theatre director Katie Mitchell. Peter Wolf, the radio dramatist, described his gift as a script developer: "He deployed all the experience distilled from a life given to theatre to make the process of working and reworking play scripts a humanising process as well as a technical one." Tom understood the struggle involved in writing plays because he aspired to write. He was a member of the writers' group led by Stephen Jeffreys for the Paines Plough touring company in London. His writing was always concerned with American politics and social issues and attempted to blend politics and myth in dramatic form. [Series: Other Lives: Obituary Of Tom Ryan, by Eileen Cadman. The Guardian, Friday November 9, 2007.] Added note: Tom was much loved and valued by his students here in the UK, and is fondly remembered by them and by his friends. He had marvellous humanity, kindliness and humour, and a lack of pretension not always found in the theatre world. - Eileen Cadman, May 2008.

Mary Lynn and Emery Patten

Class of 1953. Chorus, Fauvines President, Notre Maison, Oratory State, Childrens Theater. Married Emery P. Patten. Her parents: Thomas Lynn Wakefield and Helen Whitesides Wakefield of Provo, Utah. Their four children: Dan Wakefield [BYH Class of 1955], Provo; daughters, Mary Lynn Wakefield (Emery) Patten [BYH Class of 1953], Fairview; Emma Susann Wakefield [BYH Class of 1958], Menlo Park, California; and Helen Margaret Wakefield (Dick) Devey [BYH Class of 1964], American Fork. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Mary Lynn Wakefield Patten, 8/14/1935 ~ 7/7/2022. Fairview, Utah — On July 7, 2022, Mary Lynn Wakefield Patten passed from this life to the next. She was born August 14, 1935, in Ogden, Utah. She grew up in the shadow of Timpanogos, attended Brigham Young High School, graduating in the Class of 1953. She then attended BYU, from which she graduated with a degree in Home Economics Education. After BYU, she studied at Upper Montclair Teacher's College in New Jersey, and taught Home Economics in Rupert, Idaho. Mary Lynn married Emery Phillips Patten in 1960. They lived all over, and every place they went was made better by Mary Lynn's generosity and poise. She made dinners seem to appear magically, for family, for unexpected guests, for gatherings of 200 people, and just as wondrously brought up vegetables and flowers, in California and Michigan, and even in the scorching sun of Saudi Arabia where she lived for many years. And, oh, could she make stuff. Jam and pies, sure, but hard-candy lollipops, too. People who tasted her cinnamon rolls have dreams about them. She sewed and quilted and embroidered and crocheted, knitted and tatted, and made things in ways we don't have words for, bequeathing to her children a love for textiles that made her cheeks rosy. In the many places she lived, Mary Lynn served in every capacity, from stake Relief Society president to primary teacher. She and Emery served a Spanish-speaking LDS mission in NYC. For years, she served as a Manti Temple worker. Mary Lynn was curious about people, a good friend, an adoring oldest sister, mother, aunt, cousin, "lollipop lady". She saw and appreciated each person she met around the world and delighted in their uniqueness. In passing, Mary Lynn joined Emery, also her parents Thomas Lynn and Helen Wakefield, and her niece Julie Wakefield Morrison. She leaves her brother Dan Wakefield and sisters Emma Susann Wakefield and Helen Devey. So too, her five children, Paralee King, Dow Wakefield Patten, Lynell Lemon, Celia Mason, and Martha Weatherred. Mary Lynn leaves four sons-in-law, eleven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Services will be 11 am Saturday, July 16, 2022 at the Fairview 3rd Ward Chapel, rock church, 131 E 100 N, Fairview, Utah. Viewing from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Interment, Fairview City Cemetery. Online condolences and Live Zoom Link at rasmussenmortuary.com in her obituary. [Deseret News, July 10 2022 to July 13, 2022.]
