GEORGE, UT -- A collision just north of Moab, Utah Saturday afternoon, September 18, 1999, ended the mortal life of Ernest Donald Oates. He was born March 7, 1934 in Los Angeles, California. During the Korean War Ernest served in the Marine Corps stationed in Japan. He earned a Master's degree in Portuguese and a Ph.D. in History from Brigham Young University. Though he had intended to pursue a career in academia, he accepted instead a commission with the U.S. State Department as a Foreign Service Officer. In that service he was posted in Kenya, Costa Rica, Colombia, Germany, and Japan. Ernest married Selene Sandberg on February 5, 1962 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He retired to St. George in 1987 to be with his parents. At the time of his death, he was working on a book in culmination of his lifelong interest in Africa. Ernest was a man of uncommon intelligence and integrity. His wife, Selene; four sons: Merrill, Jared, Sheldon, and Joseph; two sisters: Diane Nolen and Irene Cattani; his mother: Florence Oates; and many close friends and family members will miss him. Funeral services were held Friday, September 24, 1999 at the St. George West LDS Stake Center, 1285 No. Bluff. Graveside services were held Saturday, September 25, 1999 at the Provo City Cemetery. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vivian Frank Short and Lillian (Lowe) Short. Valrie graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1957 and earned a Bachelors degree in education from BYU. As a school teacher, she demonstrated a remarkable talent for maintaining order- with a quiet yet firm, kindly but authoritative voice. She later demonstrated that same talent as primary president. Valrie also enjoyed many hours of pleasure playing the piano. She shared the love of music with others throughout her many church callings over the years. Valrie retired from teaching soon after her marriage. She dedicated her remarkable organizing skills to create and maintain a lovely home life, which she enjoyed with her husband and children. Unfortunately, after about 18 years enjoying her growing family, Valrie began showing symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis. She continued bravely, guiding each child to complete independence. During the later stages of that progressive disease, she was taken care of by the Rocky Mountain Care Facility in Bountiful, Utah. They are a wonderful and caring group of people. Swensen unexpectedly returned to Heavenly Father on August 18th, 2010. Don was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Albert D. and Jennie Romney Swensen. He spent his boyhood in Washington, D.C. and later in Provo where he graduated from BY High in 1957. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission in Australia from 1959-1961. Following his mission, he earned a B.S. in Bacteriology (Microbiology) with a minor in Chemistry from BYU, where his father and grandfather both taught. His career as a medical technologist took him to Los Angeles and then back to Utah where he worked for Holy Cross Hospital, Primary Children's Medical Center, Utah Valley Medical Center, and Alta View Hospital. He had many close friends among his colleagues. He was sealed to his beloved wife Louise Esplin in the Salt Lake Temple on March 1, 1982. He was an affectionate husband who adored being a father to Jennie and Scott. He devoted all his spare time to nurturing and supporting them unconditionally, settling his last 20 years in Sandy. Don retired six years ago and took the opportunity to pursue some of his other passions. He loved to paint, play handyman around the house, care for his yard, and travel the world from Jerusalem to Europe. At church he particularly enjoyed serving in the Primary. Don is survived by his wife, Louise; daughter, Jennie; son, Scott Donald; sister, Marilyn Hess (Ted); twin brother John; brother, Philip (Dana); and sister Margaret Lifferth (Dennis). Joint funeral services were held Saturday at Compton, California, for Kathleen Thurman Abplanalp, 23, formerly of Provo, Utah, and her seven-week-old son, David, both victims of a November 12, 1962 traffic crash at Artesia, California. Mrs. Abplanalp's husband, Delloy Abplanalp, suffered head cuts, bruises and a broken right elbow, and her daughter, Denise, 2 1/2, a broken shoulder and bruises in the crash of their family car with a truck. The family was scheduled to start a few days later for a Thanksgiving visit to Provo. The family has resided at Paramount, California for the past two years. Mrs. Abplanalp was killed instantly in the crash. The baby died three days later. Mrs. Abplanalp was born February 15, 1939, in Provo, a daughter of Max Evert Thurman and Elma Harding Thurman. She attended Provo public schools, graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1957, and was a student for two years at Brigham Young University. She was married to Delloy Abplanalp on August 21, 1959, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She was a talented singer, played the piano, and engaged in sports as a hobby. She taught in MIA and Sunday School, where she served as chorister. She was a member of the Singing Mothers in Paramount, where she served as organist. Her baby, David, was born September 18, 1962. Her life changed forever when she followed a prompting to go to a high school dance where she met her sweetheart, Giles Gordon Baum. They were married on June 29,1955 and sealed for eternity on May 4, 1956 in the Manti, Utah LDS temple and built a beautiful life together raising five children at their home in Orem, Utah. Shirley graduated from B.Y. High in the Class of 1957 and earned an Associate’s degree in Graphic Art from UVCC. An accomplished artist, Shirley was an active member of the LDS church and held many callings throughout her life. She was a student of the scriptures and developed a strong testimony of the gospel. She made love the dominant quality of her life, in every way teaching our Savior’s gospel by her example. We love you Mom and will miss you every day until we’re together again! You’re a keeper! "None of my classmates knew that I was a year younger than them. I skipped 10th grade. I'll be 68 next month; I was still sweet 16 when I graduated BYH. ~ ~ ~ ~ One of my favorite BYH teachers was Mr. Allman who taught biology & Spanish. So, I had him two years in a row! He talked two of us girls into going to the Prom with guys from South America who spoke little English....it was fun! The only thing more fun was when our band won the chance to go to Vegas. We marched in our WOOL uniforms for miles in Vegas in hot weather for Helldorado Days! I played first chair flute the two years I was there. ~ ~ ~ ~ Our family name was Van Moorleghem when my grandfather, Isadore F. Van Moorleghem, came through Ellis Island, NY in 1896. He was born in Nokere, Belgium in 1876. He was 20 years old when he immigrated. The family name was changed to Van Moorlehem when they settled in Canada. Several weeks ago I finally found the original ship's manifest with my grandfather's name on it! I've been looking for it for five years. No one else had been able to find it. Needless to say, I am ecstatic with joy! Now I am beginning to find relatives! In Belgium they still spell our name Van Moorleghem, along with several families in the States here. My father and four of us children were all born in Canada. My youngest sister, Nancy, was the only member of the family born in the U.S., besides my mother. @2008

Retiree a fixture at Maple Canyon campground - Story by Mark Johnston, The Daily Herald - August 24, 2012 PROVO — Pulling a red bandana from his pocket, Ron Whitney, 73, removes his glasses and dabs the sweat from his face, forehead and neck. Sitting at the table inside his aging camper, Whitney opens a large bottle of Powerade and sips the cold drink, enjoying a little reprieve from the summer heat outside. It’s a well-deserved morning break for Whitney, the campground host at Whiting Campground in Maple Canyon. After an early start cleaning up after the weekend rush, there is still much more to do. Anyone visiting the campground in the past three years will have no doubt spotted Whitney, maybe even stopped to chat with him or just seen the host and his dog briefly, cruising by in a golf cart, arm outstretched in a friendly wave. Upon retiring from what Whitney calls “real world work,” he quickly signed up with the recreational management company American Land & Leisure and was applying for the Whiting Campground before the company even got the contract for it. For four years he worked at other campgrounds before finally settling in the familiar surroundings east of Mapleton. “I relate to this canyon. My dad was born and raised in Mapleton so we spent a lot of time up here when I was young,” he told the Daily Herald, recalling family gatherings and camping trips in the area and hunting his first deer on the mountain above. “I’ve been coming up this canyon mostly all my life,” Whitney said. From the sound of it, a good deal of that life has been spent working hard and that doesn’t seem to be changing even in retirement. After graduating from Brigham Young High School in 1957, Whitney served in the U.S. Navy, worked on road construction, as a taxi cab driver and at the Tooele Army Depot loading ammunition, and that’s just scratching the surface. He even started his own recreation cleanup company, maintaining campsites in the Spanish Fork District. The business didn’t last long, however, as the U.S. Forest Service implemented pack-in-pack-out, and his services were no longer required. It was tough work while it lasted, 12 hours a day, six days a week, but it was work he enjoyed. “Now at my age I’m doing good getting this campground cleaned up in a week,” Whitney said, still sipping Powerade while enjoying his break, one of a number he takes to divide up his daily workload. Arriving the first of April, Whitney gets a head start cleaning up the campground before visitors begin arriving Easter weekend. For the next six months he lives at Whiting, packing up around mid-September after the last of the large group reservations have come and gone. Waking early and having a quick breakfast, Whitney is usually at work by 8 a.m., looking to get most of the difficult tasks done before the heat of day. With 25 campsites and two large group sites to take care of, there is plenty for one man to do, keeping him busy six days a week. Whether checking on reservations, doing the paperwork, painting tables, cleaning bathrooms (the “technical work,” as he calls it), digging out fire pits or enforcing the rules, Whitney takes great pride in his work and is happy to hear any compliments that come his way. He gives guests a quick rundown of the most important rules he wishes them to follow: pets on leash, generators off 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., litter-free campsite, extinguish fires with water. “And No. 5 — enjoy,” he said to new guests before pulling away on his golf cart, his dog Baby sitting next to him keeping an eye out for visiting canines. Each Tuesday Whitney gets a day off, if you can call it that. He works on his truck, gets a haircut for the dog, goes to doctor appointments, does laundry, buys groceries. The list goes on and on, making his workweek sound easy. “It’s getting harder as I get older,” Whitney said, admitting it takes him a little longer to get the work done than it did three years ago. He frequently gets help from local Boy Scout troops and other volunteers. “I’m a firm believer that if you get volunteers, use ‘em,” he said. “It takes a lot of work off my shoulders.” With or without the help, Whitney wouldn’t give it up. He enjoys the work, enjoys his trailer, enjoys the simplicity of it all. “It’s simple, it’s easy. Most expensive thing is keeping gas in this generator so I can watch my John Wayne movies,” he said, showing off a collection of DVDs including some of his favorites — “Green Berets” and “Chisum.” If he’s not enjoying a good movie, he’s working his way through a stack of used books picked up from the book exchange in Spanish Fork. “Usually by six or seven o’clock I’m plugged into a movie or reading a book,” he said. The 17-foot trailer is a bit small, and one day he hopes to upgrade if even by just a few feet. But it seems that’s a lot of money and a long way off. Still, Whitney seems comfortable in the old trailer, shaded from sun and sheltered from wind by a nice canopy of trees, a comfortable mattress to sleep on, a table to eat and work at and plenty of friendly neighbors coming and going from all over the world. The best part of living in the trailer is that come the end of the season, “Just hook onto it and,” Whitney whistled, pointing down the winding road to the valley below, “down the canyon I go.” By the time September rolls around he’s usually looking forward to leaving, but by that time he’s also signed the papers to come back the following year. While he’d initially planned on only signing up as camp host for a single season, just to say he had the experience, Whitney is working his seventh year and planning on doing the same next spring. Dennis received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from BYU, worked on a Ph.D. at Oregon State University, and was a professor of biological sciences. He served as a bishop, counselor in a stake presidency and stake president. I am a reading tutor, have taught seminary and served in Relief Society, Young Women and Primary. Clark. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Gaile Woodruff Clark passed away Saturday, February 2, 2008, surrounded by her children and grandchildren, following an eight-year battle with cancer. Gaile was born August 29, 1939 to Asahel and Eva Stock Woodruff in Salt Lake City, Utah. Growing up with her best friend and sister, Carolyn, she loved riding her horse, reading, playing the piano, and going on family trips. Gaile attended Brigham Young High School, graduating in 1957, and Brigham Young University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English along with a secondary teaching certificate. While in school, she met and married DaCosta Cecil Clark of Provo. After graduation Gaile and Cecil moved to Palo Alto, California where Gaile taught high school while Cecil was earning his doctoral degree. Next they moved to Seattle, Washington, where they lived for nine years before moving to Provo, Utah, where they settled permanently. During these years they began their family and, over 15 years, had seven children. Gaile, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, loved and served in every auxiliary at the ward and stake levels. She particularly loved working with the young woman, and did so many times over the course of her life. After rearing their children, Cecil and Gaile served two full-time missions. The first, at the Jerusalem Center in Israel, allowed her to utilize her musical talents in daily organ recitals and, as well, to share her compassionate nature in conducting humanitarian projects in hospitals. The second, to Laos, focused on humanitarian work in English teaching, music keyboarding, working with blind children and being part of the first LDS branch. Additionally, Gaile was instrumental in establishing the first Young Women organization in Laos. During this time in Laos, she witnessed the calling of the first two Lao missionaries and the dedication of the country of Laos for missionary work. The last years of her life, Gaile quietly and willingly dealt with the various stages of cancer. Her faith was exemplified by her determination to serve, to live life to the fullest and to do the will of her Heavenly Father to the end. Her greatest joys were her family and the gospel. Gaile is survived by her husband, Cecil; her sister, Carolyn Sutherland Bearnson of Provo; and six of her children: Stacy Hansen of Boise, Tamara Pinder of Orem, Cheri Kohler of Provo, Brett Clark of Albuquerque, Allyson Thompson of Clearfield and Scott Clark of LondonÑas well as their spouses and 19 grandchildren. Gaile was preceded in death by her infant son Stephen. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at the Pleasant View 4th Ward Chapel, 2900 North 650 East, Provo. Friends may call on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center Street, Provo and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the services at the chapel. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. Career: A homemaker-writer from Provo, Utah, she is widely known among Mormon readers as the author of two volumes of poetry, Beginnings (1965), and The Search (1970). She has achieved a wide readership for her compilation, Daughters of Light (1973). Her play, Pegora the Witch, and her Mormon musical, The Order is Love, have been widely produced, as have Think Your Way to a Million, and Martyr-in-Waiting. A thorough-going professional, Pearson has published widely in LDS and non-Mormon periodicals and has written several films for the Brigham Young University Motion Picture Studio. Carol Lynn Pearson has been a professional writer, speaker, and performer for many years. Many of her poems have been reprinted in such places as Ann Landers’ column and Chicken Soup for the Soul, as well as in college literary textbooks. The poems appear now in a compilation, Picture Window (1996). Her autobiography, Goodbye, I Love You (1986), tells the story of her marriage to a homosexual man, their divorce, ongoing friendship, and her caring for him as he died of AIDS. Carol Lynn has written numerous educational motion pictures, including the well-known, Cipher in the Snow (1973), as well as many plays and musicals, two of which were commissioned by Sundance Theater. She both wrote and acted in, Mother Wove the Morning (1989). She has written seven inspirational books under the series title, Fables for Our Times. Her recent book, Consider the Butterfly: Transforming Your Life through Meaningful Coincidence, was a finalist in the Inspirational/Spiritual category of the 2002 Independent Publishers Book Awards. She is the mother of four grown children and lives in Walnut Creek, California, where she recently spearheaded a project called “Voices to Afghanistan” to help teach English to Afghani schoolchildren. HIS OBITUARY: Ephraim, Utah -- Richard Goodridge Zabriskie passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2004 at the age of 64 in the Gunnison Valley Hospital. Dick was born September 20, 1939 in Lethbridge, Alberta Canada to Arnold Hooper Zabriskie and Barbara Goodridge Zabriskie, the last of four children. The family moved back to Provo in 1944 following the death of his father. Dick attended Provo schools and graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1953 [actually 1957]. He later attended BYU. Dick joined the Army Reserve when he was 17, and served for 6 years. He served an honorable LDS mission to New Zealand. He married Vicki Lynne Wahl on June 28, 1963 in the Manti LDS Temple. Dick worked for Dixon Taylor Russell Home Furnishings until he started working for the U.S. Postal Service in Provo. He and the family moved to Ephraim, Utah in 1976 when he became the Postmaster of the Ephraim Post Office. Dick's greatest joy was spending time with his family. He also enjoyed his work in the Manti Temple. His hobbies included reading about U.S. history, coin and stamp collecting and target shooting. He was survived by his wife, Vicki, their children Lisa McGinnis (Vic) and their daughters Joan and Morgan, R. Cary Zabriskie (Kristin) their son Zach; Laura Hunter (Josh) and their son Lance; and Jennifer L. Zabriskie. Dick is also survived by his sister, Virginia Fielding, his brother, Bill Zabriskie, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister JoAnne Carter.
