Class of 1907~H? Harvey H. Gates. Harvey Harris (Hal) Gates was born in Laie, Oahu, Hawaii [Territory of Hawaii] on January 19, 1889. His parents were Jacob Forsberry Gates and Susan (Susa) Amelia Young Gates [BYA Faculty, Distinguished Honorary Alumnae, and Trustee]. He attended Brigham Young High School [years not yet found] in Provo, and later the LDS College in Salt Lake City. He served church missions in the Northwestern States and in Europe. He became a prominent and history-making Hollywood film writer. In 1913 he began writing for D. W. Griffith, New York film producer. He went to Hollywood in 1915 and wrote for Universal Pictures. His first major screen credit was "Judge Not; or The Woman of Mona Diggings" (1915). Over the years he wrote scripts for MGM, Paramount and Warner Brothers, including "Say It With Songs" and "Sky Riders". He wrote the scenerio for "Lives of a Bengal Lancer". A screenwriter from 1917, Gates also briefly served as a director. Gates' only known directorial credits are a brace of 1918 films including "Wine Girl" and "Marriage Lie". During the first years of the talkies, he collaborated on the scripts of such prestige productions as "Hell Divers" (1931) and "If I Had a Million" (1932). By the 1940s, he was working for producer Sam Katzman. Harvey Gates' final credits include several East Side Kids and Bela Lugosi films, as well as actress Kay Francis' Monogram productions "Divorce" (1945) and "Allotment Wives" (1946). His filmography includes 216 films. ~ ~ ~ ~ Hal Gates first married Lucie Jeanne "Bebe" Genez in New York City. She was born on June 2, 1889 (or 1890) in Hudson County, New Jersey. Her parents were Victor E. M. Genez and Jeanne M. V. Schevingt Genez. They had three children, and were divorced. Lucie died on September 24, 1971 in Los Angeles, California. ~ ~ Hal Gates second married Irene Boland in 1946. He died two years later on Wednesday, November 3, 1948 in Los Angeles, California of a heart ailment. Survivors included his former wife, his widow, and two sons and a daughter: Victor Cecil Gates, Jacob Gates, and Mrs. Beulah Susan Gates Evans, all of Hollywood. He was also survived by a brother and two sisters: Franklin Young Gates, Mrs. Leah Gates Widtsoe, and Mrs. Emma Lucy Gates Bowen, all of Salt Lake City.
