George Cluff

Class of 1887? Born on April 29th, 1869, George Cluff was a recent graduate from Brigham Young Academy, when he became the second principal of Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher, Arizona. Recognizing a need for the college to grow beyond its one-room building, Cluff was able to move the college into a larger facility in Thatcher (the Tithing Office). The move considerably enhanced the college's ability to teach students. However, the college experienced several financially difficult years. In 1893, there was a stock market crash that led to a general downturn of the economy. The college was not immune to this slowdown, but under Cluff's leadership, the school was able to collect enough donations from community members to keep the school open during four trying years.

Source: Deseret Evening News, May 21, 1887. ~ ~ ~ ~ Willard Young Croxall and his sister, Carolyn Young Croxall, were adopted by the Cannon family. Willard was born on July 25, 1869 in Salt Lake City, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ His birth parents were Mark Croxall and Mary Eliza Young. His adoptive parents were Apostle George Quayle Cannon and Caroline Partridge [Carlie] Young. ~ ~ ~ ~ Willard's birth father, Mark Croxall, was born on October 7, 1844 in Church Gresley, Derbyshire, England. His parents were Jonah Croxall and Eliza Orgill Croxall. Mark Croxall died on January 26, 1889 in Butte, Montana. On June 4, 1865 Mark Croxall had married Mary Eliza Young in Salt Lake City, Utah. [Mark Croxall second married Caroline Partridge Young on October 7, 1868.] Mary Eliza Young, Willard's birth mother, was born on June 8, 1847 in Winter Quarters, Iowa. Her parents were Brigham Young and Clarissa Ross Young. Mary Eliza Young died on September 5, 1871 in Salt Lake City, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ Willard Croxall married Gertrude Mamie Pierce of Pasadena, California, on November 4, 1899 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Willard died on March 12, 1920, place not yet known. ~ ~ ~ ~ Willard was raised by Caroline Young after Mary Eliza Young's death, and adopted by George Quayle Cannon (see "Cannon Family Historical Treasury", p. 137). Do not yet know if Willard used Croxall or Cannon for his surname. Do not yet know where they lived.

Class of 1887? John DeGrey Dixon. He was educated in Provo grade schools, then attended Brigham Young Academy where he enrolled in the Business (Commercial) course. He then found employment with Samuel Lilliard, a building contractor. He was a business, government and church leader. He married Sara Ann Lewis on September 18, 1889 in Manti, Utah.

Training School & Registrar, 1888-1893. ~ ~ ~ ~ Emil Benjamin Isgreen was born April 27, 1865 in Tooele, Utah. His parents were Anders Jonsson [Isgreen] and Anna Britta [Jansson] Stromberg Isgreen. He married Minnie Overn Peterson on February 24, 1909 in Logan, Utah. He died on November 25, 1945 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Four alumni spoke about different periods of time in the life of the Academy. "Prof. Newton Noyes, now the president of the Sanpete Stake Academy, told of the work of the [Brigham Young] academy from '84 to '92. It was during that period that the academy building [Lewis Building] had burned down, yet the very year of that seeming death blow to the institution, President Maeser stated in his report that by the blessings of God the institution has grown greatly."
