Pearl and Daryle Redd |

Class of 1930? Honorary? Pearl Naegle. Her parents were John C. Naegle and Millicent Dorothy Jameson Naegle. Pearl was the sister of Annaley Naegle Redd. When her sister, Annaley, graduated from Ammon Idaho High School in 1928, she decided to enroll at BYU in the fall of 1928. Pearl accompanied her sister to Provo when they shared living quarters, and Pearl attended Brigham Young High School [but we do not know if she graduated from BYH]. She married Daryle Redd, and they resided in Monticello, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~OBITUARY OF HER HUSBAND: Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Daryle Mickelson Redd, returned to his Heavenly Father Tuesday, February 18, 2003. He was the first of eleven children born to Lemuel Hardison Redd III, and Lovina Mickelson Redd. He was born on August 30, 1912 in Bluff, Utah. He grew up in his beloved San Juan County in the towns of Bluff, Blanding and Monticello. He graduated from Monticello High School and attended college at Utah State University and Brigham Young University. Daryle married his sweetheart, Pearl Naegle Redd on June 7, 1939 in the Salt Lake Temple and was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many positions including; Elders Quorum President, Stake Missionary, Bishop's counselor, Bishop, High Counselor, and Branch President. He and his wife served a mission at the Manti Temple. He served for many years in the Boy Scout program and earned the Silver Beaver Award. He served his community for many years as president and on the Board of Directors of the Blue Mt. Irrigation Company and on the San Juan County School Board. His life was one of service and hard work. He owned and operated his ranch and farm in and near Monticello, Utah, and made tremendous contributions to the stockman profession. Daryle and Pearl had five children; Tonya Redd (deceased); Dorothy Redd (deceased); Merlene Redd (Don) Lovejoy, Mapleton, Utah; Lemuel Hardison Redd IV (Julie), Monticello, Utah; and JoAnne Redd (Ed) Peterson, Salt Lake City, Utah. They have eleven living grandchildren and seven living great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two children, two brothers, two sisters, and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 22, 2003 in Monticello, Utah. Interment, Monticello City Cemetery. [Deseret News, Thursday, February 20, 2003.] |

Class of 1910? Frankie Nagle Averett, age 98, died Friday, April 5, 1991 in an Orem care center. She was born December 5, 1892 in Denver, Colorado to Reuben Webster and Inez Elizabeth Blackman Nagle. She married Ruphas Judathan Averett on June 28, 1916 in Salt Lake City; he died August 10, 1973. She attended schools in Denver, Springville and Provo, and received a Normal teaching certificate from Brigham Young Academy. She taught school in Hobble Creek Canyon and Wallsberg. She was a convert to the LDS Church and served as Primary president for 14 years, as a teacher in Relief Society, and Sunday School. She was a stake missionary and had done extensive genealogy and temple work. She and her husband farmed their entire married life. She also worked at the Eddington Cannery, at the Springville Post Office, and Utah State Hospital. She served as a voter agent. She was a member of the DUP and the K.S. Literary Club. She was an avid gardener, raising many types of flowers. After her mother's death, she raised her brothers and sisters. She is survived by two sons and one daughter, Keith Howard Averett, Wendell Averett, both of Springville; Mrs. Robert (Renee) Snyder, Mapleton; 11 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one grandson, killed in the Vietnam War. Funeral services were held Monday, April 8, 1991, in Springville, Utah. Interment, Evergreen Cemetery. Daughter D'Ann Naeser (John) Andersen of Salt Lake City, Utah. HER MOTHER'S OBITUARY: Mae Ogden White passed away February 12, 2003. Born July 16, 1911 in Richfield, Utah, to Franklin Marsh Ogden and Eleanor Ward. Married Karl Naser March 12, 1932. Later Divorced. Mae worked at the Oak Ridge, Tennessee facility where the atomic bomb was developed during World War II. She graduated from Brigham Young University June 1, 1948, where she was given an award as the most outstanding student in the business department. She taught typing and shorthand at Weber College in Ogden, Utah. She married Lee White August 20, 1953 in Elko, Nevada. He died April 1, 1990. Mae traveled in all 50 states and many foreign countries. Her hobbies were knitting sweaters and afghans. She was a member of the LDS Church. Preceded in death by husband Lee White. Survived by her daughter D'Ann Andersen (John) of Salt Lake City, UT; three stepdaughters, Nancy Peterson (John) of Vicksburg, MS, Judy Shepherd (Robert) of Las Vegas, NV; Maggie Jamison of Port Angeles, WA; one brother Melvin Ogden of Uintah, UT; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Miriam Nelke, Special Elocution teacher, 1900-1908. ~ ~ ~ ~ BYU's Nelke Experimental Theatre: The Nelke Experimental Theatre is designed primarily as a laboratory for the practicum activities of the acting and directing students, and is home to the student-directed weekly Mask Club productions during the school year. It features an elevator stage, sharply raked auditorium seating, and seats 280 people. Miriam Nelke, for whom the Nelke Theatre was named, was one of the first teachers of dramatic arts at Brigham Young Academy. Her students so appreciated her tutelage that they later formed the Nelke Reading Club in her honor, a Provo organization that existed for decades. |

BYH Faculty & Staff - Head Football Coach, plus Track & Wrestling Coach, late 1950s and early 1960s. Allen “Nick” Nelson is an alumnus of Carbon High School, class of 1950, where he participated in football, wrestling and track. Enrolling in Carbon College in 1951, he was captain of the football team, played baseball and was president of the Block "C" Club. He graduated with his associate’s of science degree in 1953 and moved onto Westminster College in Salt Lake City where he played football and baseball. The U.S. Army was his next assignment and he continued his athletic career playing football at Fort Carson, Colo. Upon discharge, he moved to Provo to attend college and graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in physical education. Nelson’s first teaching assignment was at Wasco High School in Wasco, Calif., where he taught biology and began his coaching career. Within two years, he found himself back in Provo at Brigham Young High School as head football coach, plus track and wrestling coach. By 1961 he moved back to California where he was an assistant football coach and head track and field coach at Porterville College. He concluded his formal education at BYU, earning a doctorate degree in 1972. He continued to teach and coach at Porterville College until his retirement in 1993. While in Portersville, Nelson served as head football coach, athletic director and won conference championships in wrestling, track and field, cross country and two California Community College Small Conference Invitational Championships in track and field. He is the recipient of the U.S. Track and Field Association’s Award for outstanding contribution to cross country and track and field, selected as a track and field official for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California, and inducted into Porterville College’s Hall of Fame in March of 2003. |

Source: 1949 BYH Graduation Exercises Program. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Charles Elroy Nelson, age 74, passed away Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at Milford Valley Hospital after a courageous battle with stomach cancer. Elroy was born on April 17, 1931 to Charles Farrier Nelson and Orpha N. Nelson in Lynndyl, Utah. Four years later on his birthday, he was joined by his twin siblings Jay and Janice. Elroy attended several schools through his childhood as his father was moved several times with his work on the railroad. He graduated from BY High in 1949. In 1950 he hired on the Union Pacific Railroad where he worked for 43 years. On June 17, 1954 he married Patricia Ann Larson in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her father was Gustave Larson, who taught in the BYU Department of Religion. Elroy served in Korea from 1954 to 1956. He loved to read and had a great knowledge of many things. He could repair almost anything. He loved spending time in his shop tinkering and visiting with friends and family. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Elroy was survived by his mother, Orpha, of Milford, Utah; brother Jay (Kathy) Nelson of Salt Lake City; daughters Carol Ann Nelson (Warren) Krager of Tigard, Oregon; Lisa Nelson (Lary) Carter of Milford; son Charles Mark (Karen) Nelson of Milford; grandkids Rachel and Amy Krager of Tigard, Oregon; Natalie (Jeremy) Ludlow and Travis Nelson of Henderson, Nevada; Nick and Lauren Carter of Milford; and Cassidy Carter of Maceio Brazil (LDS) Mission. Elroy was preceded in death by his father, Charles Nelson; wife, Patricia Nelson; sister Janice Nelson Hardy; and grandson Charles Michael Nelson.
