Macdonald, George Aird
George and Lulu Macdonald |
Class of 1890. George Aird Macdonald was born to Alexander F. Macdonald and Agnes Aird in 1870 in Provo, Utah. He graduated from Brigham Young Academy in 1890, and taught school for two years in Graham County, Arizona. While there he married Lulu Cluff in 1891. For 13 years he worked as a bookkeeper for a store in Mesa, Arizona, and later engaged in raising livestock. His biographical sketch in James McClintock’s book, Arizona, Vol. III, states that George purchased the plant of the Mesa Milling Company which he operated for three years. George served as the Mormon Church as Maricopa Stake Clerk in Mesa, Arizona, from 1900 to 1907. He was appointed to the public office of Deputy County Treasurer for Maricopa County in 1906, and then was elected County Treasurer in 1911. He served two terms, almost ten years. He was described as “discharging his duties with marked promptness and fidelity, being a most faithful custodian of public funds.” He kept his farm and other interests in Mesa. He was also known for his beautiful handwriting and skill in drawing. After a number of years childlessness, George and Lulu Macdonald began to despair of having children. Lulu went to Mexico, and George was to follow with a prospective polygamous bride, the marriage to be performed by his father, A.F. Macdonald. The other woman backed out of the marriage, but his father A.F. Macdonald promised Lulu that, “For the sacrifice you have made in your feelings in this matter, the Lord will bless you and open your womb and you shall have children.” The blessing was literally fulfilled when she gave birth to two children, in 1905 and 1908. But they both died in infancy, a source of great sorrow. George Macdonald died in Phoenix in 1931 of heart disease after a two-day illness. Lulu died in 1936. Their children: Rose Macdonald, born and died September 28, 1905; and Aaron Cluff Macdonald, born and died January 21, 1908. |

Max was born on October 9, 1922 to John Menzies and Nora Parker Macfarlane in West Point, Utah. He was the third of five children. He spent his first two years on the Parker farm before moving to his Grandfather Macfarlane's ranch. Two years later he moved to Pleasant Grove, Utah where he grew up and worked on the family farm, harvesting fruit and working with livestock. After graduating from high school he went to BYU. When Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941 he went to radio school. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army. He was then inducted into active duty after completing more training and was sent to India to install radio and radar equipment on aircrafts. After serving in the China/Burma/India war he again attended BYU. While attending BYU he received his teaching certificate and he student taught at Brigham Young High and Springville Junior High. He graduated from BYU in 1949 but was unable to find a teaching job so he enrolled in graduate school majoring in Botany. With the encouragement of his professor he took a Civil Service exam and began working for the Forest Service, soon after he began his career with Bureau of Land Management. He thoroughly enjoyed being able to work outdoors. While working in Canon City, Colo. he met Norene Miller and became engaged. They were married in the Manti Temple on November 6, 1965. Shortly after the marriage they moved to Boise, Idaho. In 1969 Craig Miller Macfarlane joined the family followed by Laura in 1972. Max continued working for BLM and became Range Staff Officer for the entire district. He fought fires in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Washington and Alaska. While working in the State Office he received a job in Maseru, Lesotho in Southern Africa. His job was spent in many small villages and mountains teaching the natives agriculture skills. The family enjoyed their two years abroad and visited Germany, Australia, New Zealand and most of South Africa. After returning home he began a new short career as a realtor. In 1987 his son was in a serious automobile accident rendering him a paraplegic on his left side. Max spent countless hours helping Craig rehabilitate himself and attending classes with him at BSU. During this time he continued to pursue his love of learning by attending Photography, Biology, Agriculture and Physical Education Classes. In 1991 he returned to Pleasant Grove for a short time to help care for his aging mother. Max became a grampa for the first time in 1992 and was there for the birth of his only granddaughter, Ashlee Ross Twiss. They shared a very special bond. Ashlee was joined by Paul Parker in 1996 and Matthew Michael in 1998. Max loved his grandchildren and they brought much joy to his life. He loved spending time with them and hearing about their school, sports and many adventures. Max continued his love of travel by traveling on a tour of the Holy Lands. His visit included Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the Gardens of Gethsemane on Christmas Eve. Max and Craig also traveled to Guatemala, Honduras, Belize and Mexico. In 2005 Max was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Even though he couldn't always remember the details of life he always knew the people who played special roles in his life. In December of 2007 he moved to Bridgeview Estates in Twin Falls to receive the care he required and to be closer to his daughter and grandchildren. They enjoyed being able to visit Grampa regularly in his remaining months. Madsen, Stella
Stella & Reed Smoot |
BYH Class Year Unknown? NOT Class of 1939. Married Reed Smoot -- @2001. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Stella Madsen Smoot, age 86, passed away June 29, 2006, at home in Salt Lake City, surrounded by her family and caregivers. She is survived by her daughters, Kathryn Smoot Egan (Wayne), Anita Smoot Hartmann (Dieter), and Marilyn Smoot; and by her grandchildren, Sherilyn Kathryn Phillips (Trevor) and Jason Reed Caldwell (Lisa), and three great-grandchildren, and her husband Reed, who loved and cherished her for 72 years. Stella was born August 10, 1919, in Provo, Utah, the daughter of Alma T. Madsen and Sarah Carter Madsen. Vivacious and lovely, she met Reed Smoot at age 14 on July 23, and they fell in love that summer. They were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on December 28, 1939, and then moved to Palo Alto, California, while Reed finished his degree at Stanford University. Stella was Reed's support through the days in the U.S. Navy during World War II and throughout his 42-year career with the U & I Inc. They resided in Chinook, Montana, Spokane and Seattle, Washington, Salt Lake City, and then back to Richland, Washington before retiring in Salt Lake in 1981. Stella was an avid reader and a charter member and president of Daria Literary Club. She belonged to a bridge club of girls that all met in school in Provo. They met for years and years in each others' homes. Sewing frustrated her, but she stuck to it anyway to keep her daughters in formals and school clothes. She loved dancing with Reed and playing golf; they were members of the High Steppers and Skate Clubs. She made lasting friendships, first in school, then through social clubs -- the Ambassador, Fort Douglas and Salt Lake Country Clubs -- the last of which she and Reed were members for 35 years. As a volunteer at the University of Utah Hospital she met women who became some of her closest friends and went to Europe with a group of them. She served in several ward Relief Society positions and in many charitable organizations. She and Reed traveled the U.S. extensively during his days with U & I, and in retirement. They counted their trip to South Africa to see Anita and Dieter the great adventure of their lives. An accomplished homemaker, seamstress, cook and hostess, Stella entertained many a guest for dinner parties with food and conversations full of laughter. She made visitors immediately comfortable in her home. She cared for Jason and Sheri with her own brand of tenderness, making them waffles, peanut butter and banana sandwiches, favorite meals and desserts, just as she had cared for her daughters for as long as she lived. She was a gracious neighbor and friend wherever she lived. Her entire life was filled with doing good for others -- anyone whose life might be brightened with her English toffee, mustard pickles, a shared book, a hand-knit afghan, custard pudding if you were sick, or a place at the dinner table to welcome you to the family. Her sense of humor -- disarming and wry -- was an asset as was her poetry. In what she called her "dark days" at the end of her life, she said she was a needle without thread. She left behind recipes for good food and a long life lived well. A graveside service was held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, July 3, 2006, at the Provo City Cemetery, 610 S. State Street, where she was interred. [Provo Daily Herald July 2, 2006.] |
