Lambert, Asael Carlyle
|
Asael & Florence + 1 Lambert |
||
Faculty & Staff. Eighth Principal of BY High School from 1926 to 1928. Asael Carlyle (A.C.) Lambert was born March 9, 1893 in Kamas, Utah. As the son of a widowed mother he struggled to make the farm support the family. At age seventeen he was called to fill a mission in England. Upon his return he found his mother had remarried and was living in Rexburg, Idaho. Lambert joined his mother there but soon found that he had to make his own way. He took what work was available including the herding of sheep. Within a few years he managed to attend Albion State Normal School for a year and Ricks College for another year and thus earned an elementary school teaching certificate. In turn, he became a teacher of a one-room rural school, a principal, and a county superintendent of schools. On October 8, 1914, he married Florence Smith Ballif in Salt Lake City, Utah. Florence was born September 30, 1896 in Logan, Utah. Her parents were John Lyman Ballif and Emma Gurney Smith Ballif. Florence died in December of 1947 in Safford, Arizona. Asael second married Golda Margaret "Margaret" Sayer Marr on March 18, 1949 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Asael died on April 2, 1983, Los Angeles, California, at age 90. Florence Lambert died in December of 1947 in Safford, Arizona. Florence and Asael had six children: James E. Lambert; Carlyle Ballif (C.B.) Lambert; Barbara Lambert [BYH Class of 1944] (twin); John Lambert (twin, died from scarlet fever when four years of age); Ruth Lambert; and Edith Lambert. Asael's parents were John Benjamin Lambert and Edith Lemon Lambert of Kamas, Utah. Asael second married G. Margaret Sayer Marr. Asael Carlyle Lambert (1893-1983) was a noted figure in education, administration, and planning in Utah, Idaho, and California. Beginning in 1925 he served Brigham Young University as a Professor of Education, including a term as Principal of BY High School from 1926 to 1928, then as Professor of Educational Administration, Dean of the Graduate School, and Administrative Director of the school's libraries until 1950. The highlight of his own education was completion of the Ph.D. degree in educational administration at Stanford University in 1935. Despite limited resources, the necessity to support a family on a very modest salary, and serious illness while at Stanford, he completed the doctoral program with highest academic honors. From 1951 to 1962 he worked at various positions in California for Los Angeles State College. His duties in California from included executive dean and dean of the College, and successively director of the Building Program and Projects of Los Angeles State College, including the San Fernando Valley State College. The A. C. Lambert Papers (Ms 35) are collected at the University of Utah Marriott Library, Manuscripts Division. The A. C. Lambert Papers (1929-1972) document the lifetime search of Asael Carlyle Lambert that began when, as a teacher of comparative religion at Brigham Young University, he sought answers to questions propounded by his students. Part of the collection covers the history and development of early Mormon scriptures. The documents also trace the economic, political, and sociological situations of the Mormon church, including Joseph Smith, Jr., and his life and activities pursuant to the founding and development of Mormonism. There is material dealing with practices, rituals, and doctrines propounded by the Church's early leaders. The material includes a comparative study of Mormonism with Freemasonry, other secret societies, and quasi-religious organizations. Present are Lambert's notebooks, as well as documents relating to the study of Utah's school system -- taxation, teachers, buildings, and administration -- made by a Utah School Study Committee during the administration of Governor George D. Clyde. An indexed register is available. ~ ~ ~ ~ A personal biographical essay by Roald F. Campbell is titled "A. C. Lambert: Teacher, Scholar, and Friend" and was published the periodical: Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, 17.1 (Spring): pages 113-116. ~ ~ ~ ~ OBITUARY OF HIS FIRST WIFE: Provo, December 27, 1947 -- Mrs. Florence Ballif Lambert, 51, wife of Dr. A.C. After an extended illness, he died on June 7, 2024 -- the 84th anniversary of his parents' wedding. John’s beloved wife, Heather, cared for him with unfailing dedication through his long illness, and she was with him when he died. The eldest of six siblings, John grew up in Provo, where he had frequent contact with a wide web of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins from both parents’ families. His chunky legs and arms in baby pictures occupy a central position in Lambert family lore; however, rheumatic fever and then polio threatened John’s health early on. The illnesses left him with a heart murmur and an enduring respect for bacteria and viruses but otherwise physically fit. As a child and teenager, he enjoyed Boy Scout hikes, hunting excursions, church activities, fishing trips, and family vacations, and he earned a high-school varsity letter in wrestling. As an adult, he engaged in community bowling and softball teams and played handball and racquetball. John completed a bachelor’s degree in statistics at Brigham Young University in his hometown before going on to complete a master's and doctoral studies at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. He taught statistics and probability at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia, and at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia. At age 32, John shifted out of academia into a career, based in northern New Jersey, in the pharmaceutical industry working for Sandoz Pharmaceuticals and Berlex Laboratories. He set up and analyzed statistical studies of new drugs that would be submitted to the United States Food and Drug Administration. The new career required intensive self-directed study of biology and medicine, and John accomplished it with characteristic determination and intellectual ability. John remained a New Jersey resident until his death. On March 19, 1960, John married Alice Marrian Orchard in Provo, Utah. They had two children together, Cheryl and Daryl. The young family lived in Provo and Salt Lake City, Utah, while John finished his studies at BYU. In 1963, he and Marrian traveled from Provo to Raleigh in an old Plymouth sedan with a board installed in the back to create a sleeping space for three-year-old Cheryl and 9-month-old Daryl. The family lived in a small apartment near the university campus and made many close friends among neighbors, fellow students, and church members during their five years in Raleigh. In 1973, after teaching college for five years, John moved with Cheryl and Daryl to Hopatcong, New Jersey. Marrian stayed in Fredericksburg and the marriage eventually ended. Over the next five years, with the help of friends, neighbors, family, and the church family of the Ledgewood Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, John and the two children managed life, work, and school. John married Heather Hooper Paterson on July 29, 1978, in Ledgewood, New Jersey. They soon sold their individual homes and built a new house in Roxbury Township, New Jersey, where they raised three boys: Daryl Lambert and Robert and Ronald Paterson. After their retirement, John and Heather purchased a second home together at The Ponds Retirement Community in Monroe Township, New Jersey. John and Heather traveled together and participated in many community associations. Every Christmas until the last few, John dressed up as Santa and visited the children’s ward at a nearby hospital. John and Heather devoted themselves to following events in the lives of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and they showered all their progeny with generous gifts and support. Music held a strong place in John’s life. He studied piano and cello, becoming proficient at both through diligent practice and natural inclination. In high school, he played cello in a symphony orchestra and established a jazz band with friends where he played string bass and boogie-woogie piano. He could identify and correct any incorrect pitch by ear -- a skill that he would use during his many years performing with the Princeton Garden Statesmen, an acapella men’s chorus specializing in barbershop repertoire. John enjoyed listening to a wide range of musical genres, including choral and instrumental, rock-n-roll, pop, jazz, and classical. A glance around his home office provides a glimpse into John’s life interests: an easy chair and a television; a desk with a large-screen computer; awards and recognitions of achievement; art works, music, books and puzzles; a framed pencil and charcoal drawing of John playing handball; toys for their beloved dog Binky; and a cribbage board. A closer look reveals the fundamental focus of John’s inner heart: photos of family outnumber all the other objects. John experienced grief at the deaths of his parents and that of his stepson Robert, in addition to those of many beloved friends. Loved ones who remain now grieve in turn for him: his wife, Heather; siblings Carolann Lambert Eastmond (Robert) of Las Vegas, Nevada, Melodee Lambert of Murray, Utah, Brian Ballif Lambert (Rebecca Redd) of Springville, Utah, Janine Lambert Nelson (Eric) of Stockton, California, Lisa Lambert of Provo, Utah; children Cheryl Anne Lambert (Anthony Johnson) of Santa Rosa, California, Daryl Ballif Lambert (Denise Taggart) of Cameron Park, California, Ronald Paterson of Bali, Indonesia; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. May John’s soul be free to evolve and bless all those touched by his mortal life. Memorial Service were held at Nelson Family Mortuary 4780 North University Avenue, Provo, Utah on Tuesday July 2nd 2024. The memorial service was live streamed, and the recording will be available on the funeral home website at https://nelsonmortuary.com/obituaries/john-lambert-2024. Lamoreaux, Nina

Nina and James Hamilton |

Nina Lamoreaux, BYH 1941 ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Nina Lamoreaux Hamilton, age 100, of Missoula, passed away the evening of July 21, 2023, encircled in the love of her devoted family, at Riverside Health & Rehabilitation in Missoula. Nina was born on April 19, 1923, in a log cabin in Paragonah, Utah, to Lenora Huntsman and Archie Messinger Lamoreaux. She was the eighth child of nine and a second-generation daughter of Utah Pioneers. Nina attended high school in Parowan, Utah, active in music, drama, and student leadership. Nina then graduated from Brigham Young University High School in Provo in the Class of 1941. In 1943, she met James (Jim) Leslie Hamilton of Missoula, who served as a U.S. Air Force crew chief on B-class bombers during WWII. Friends introduced them, and a pen-pal relationship struck up between Nina and Jim led to love. They were married December 12, 1943, in Coffeyville, Kansas. Their marriage was later solemnized in the LDS Salt Lake City Temple. Nina and Jim settled in Missoula and lived there for 33 years, raising three children. Nina earned a B.A. degree in primary education at the University of Montana in 1963. She taught in the Missoula School District for 22 years, retiring in 1985. Jim retired after 26 years in the Missoula Fire Dept., and they bought 42 acres in Corvallis, MT, built a home, and ranched for 14 years. Nina adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she and Jim often stepped in as parents to care for them. She loved cooking for family, who relished her rhubarb pies and huckleberry pies. She was a skilled pianist and accompanist with a lovely singing voice. She wrote and self-published two songs. Keen on card games, she was nearly impossible to beat at Canasta. Nina was tenacious, loved life and everyone in it. A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints, Nina filled many positions in teaching, music, and Relief Society leadership. She took the directive to compile family genealogy seriously and spent countless hours researching Lamoreaux family history. Nina and Jim celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary surrounded by family on Dec. 12, 2003; on Dec. 23, 2003, Jim passed away in his sleep. Nina moved to Hamilton and enjoyed adventuring with her children and grandchildren to visit family members across the U.S. Cognitive decline prompted a move to a Missoula independent-living community where she enjoyed puzzles, musical events, and making new friends. Nina returned to live with her youngest daughter at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to keep herself safe and engaged with family. In April, while in hospice, she joyfully celebrated her 100th birthday with her adoring family. Nina is survived by her family who miss her dearly: children, Steven James, Carolyn Rae Gumbiner, and Mary Lou de Roulhac; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and one on the way. Nina was laid to rest next to Jim in a graveside service held Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at Missoula City Cemetery. To honor Nina's life-long care for others, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Missoula Food Bank (missoulafoodbank.org) in lieu of flowers. [Missoulian, August 5, 2023.] |

Class of 1954. Glenna Lant. Student Body Vice President. Assistant Librarian, Fauvines, Notre Maison Reporter, Shorthand Club President, Debate, Humorous Readings, Shorthand Team. Married Dan Webb. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Glenna Webb returned to the loving arms of her Heavenly Parents on October 31, 2021, at her home in Lehi, Utah, at age 85. She was born to Arthella Mae and John Glen Lant. She grew up in Provo, Utah, two blocks away from her childhood sweetheart, Dan Webb. They later married in the Salt Lake Temple and had 8 children. Their posterity has grown to include 51 grandchildren and 86 great grandchildren, with more on the way! Glenna was Student Body Vice President and graduated from BY High in the Class of 1954. After college, she advanced in her career from being an Administrative Assistant on up to the Associate Director for the Division of Child and Family Services for the Eastern Region. In addition to her work accomplishments, she served tirelessly for the Church in the presidencies of all the auxiliaries, but her favorite callings were with the children in primary. She produced roadshows, directed girls’ camp, and worked in the temple. She also served a full-time mission with her husband in Kiev, Ukraine, speaking and teaching music in Russian. Glenna’s love was the children. She taught them in dance, she loved them in scouting, and she led them in Primary well into her late 70s. She served others by sharing her talents in knitting, crocheting, painting, tatting, quilting, sewing, and writing. Glenna truly believed that the greatest work was in her own home. She served her family her entire life. She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Larry and Boyd, and one granddaughter, Danae. She is survived by her loving spouse, Dan Webb, her sister, Letty, and brother, John. All of her children are also living and celebrate Glenna’s life. Corrine Parmenter (Brett), Cindy Evans (Mark), Chris Webb (Stacey), Kevin Webb (Lori), Valynne Stephenson (LaMar), Roxanne Averett (Kevin), Brett Webb (Joan) and Patrice love and miss their angel mother. Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 6, in Lehi, Utah, at the LDS Stake Center located at 1998 W 900 N. The viewing was from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., with the funeral following at 11 a.m. Interment, Lehi City Cemetery. Source ~ ~ ~ ~ Thank you so much . . . My mother always spoke with such fondness of BYH. Skills she learned there prepared her for a life of service. She used her short hand skills to serve as scribe for hundreds of patriarchal blessings. She didn’t attend college but she was a very accomplished business woman. We are proud of her association with BYH. Sincerely, Brett Webb [son]. 6Jan2003. |
