BYU BA Youth Leadership / Outdoor Education 1968. Married Wendell B. Johnson. Wendell B. Johnson died in spring of 1996. Despite living only 48 years, Wendell completed hundreds of paintings and drawings, served as Justice of the Peace for Mapleton, Utah, and as Mayor of Mapleton (1982-1986), coauthored two historical books, raised a daughter, earned the respect of family and friends through his patience and tact, and provided an amazing example of surpassing all expectations. Artist website http://www.wendellbjohnson.com/ They have one daughter Wendy, and 2 grandchildren. ~ ~ ~ ~ Just wanted to add to my info: From December 1968 to December 1970, I served two years -- plus three months in the Language Training Mission -- as a missionary in the Central America Mission. I was in four countries for my two full years there: Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. I had the great honor to take classes at BY High from M. Rex Arnett. We studied from a book written by Terrence Leslie Hansen, Ernest J. Wilkins and Jerry W. Larson, Español a lo vivo (Spanish As It Is Lived). Bro. Wilkins and Bro. Hansen had sons in one of my first classes at BY High that used the book. In my opinion, it is the best book ever written to learn conversational Spanish. It was used by classes all the way through BY High and BYU until I graduated. By the time I was in the mission field only a few months, people thought I had been there a year or more, and, at the end, they called me a "nativa". I don't know why BYU and others went away from this book. It was heralded as the best Spanish language manual ever by schools in all U.S. states, when it came out. I have used it to help my daughter, my sister, and my nephews to unlock the secrets of learning to speak and understand Spanish. Unfortunately, both local high schools and even BYU stopped using the book. The current tendency to stress grammar, instead of learning how to actually converse in Spanish, is a huge mistake. I still have a copy of the book, 45 years later. I had to buy another few copies along the way because I had given the book to so many others. Brother Wilkins was also the Mission President of the Language Training Mission while I was there. What a heritage we have, both at BY High and BYU! @Oct2013

Bob and Judy Edwards

Class of 1954. Robert W. Edwards. Photography Club, Ski Club, Debate, Radio Reading, Childrens Theater, Scholastic Award, Thespians, Type Team, Short Plays, Quill & Scroll, Y'ld Cat Newspaper Editorial Editor, Graduation Committee. BYU BS Mathematics 1957. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Robert William Edwards, 1937-2023. Robert W. Edwards "Bob" passed away on May 2, 2023, in Salt Lake City after a courageous battle with acute myeloid leukemia. Bob was born May 14, 1937, in New York City to Catherine Eyring and William Foster Edwards. He was the third of six children. As a young man, he moved with his family to Provo, Utah, where he attended Brigham Young University High School, graduating in the Class of 1954. In August 1957, he graduated from Brigham Young University and, the following month, he left to serve in the East German Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. After his mission, Bob attended Harvard Law School. When he graduated in 1964, he took his first position in Salt Lake City with Fabian & Clendenin for whom he had clerked the previous summer. That was the beginning of a satisfying legal career. Following his years at Fabian & Clendenin, Bob joined a small firm that would ultimately come to be known as Fox, Edwards, Gardiner & Brown until ending his career at Kirton & McConkie. During his summer clerkship with Fabian & Clendenin, Bob went on his first date with Judy Fetzer. Bob had met Judy seven years earlier when Richard Fetzer, Judy's brother and Bob's companion at the Mission Training Center, invited Bob to the Fetzer home for dinner. Bob's closeness to the Fetzer family grew during his mission as Bob served as second counselor to Judy's father, Percy K. Fetzer, President of the East German Mission. Bob and Judy dated through that summer of 1964 and, when Bob returned to Harvard Law School, Judy sent him the linden blossoms they had gathered together. Their regard for each other blossomed into love and they were married in 1965 in the Salt Lake Temple. They became the parents of six children. Bob lived his life–to borrow words from Tennyson's "Ulysses"–"strong in will" and with "heroic heart." He earned a living for his family, carried children and grandchildren through challenges, and collected Utah art, all with unflinching determination and an abiding appreciation of beauty. A runner all his life, Bob began racing in his later decades. He has been a fervent supporter of the HighFives 5K–the course passes his house–and currently holds the records for the 70-79 Male (28:17) and 80+ Male (34:07) categories. Bob had enormous energy for doing what he knew to be right. Bob and Judy were united in their love of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Service in the church brought them together and continued throughout their lives. Bob served as a bishop and a stake president. One of his sweetest callings was as president of the Primary Children's Medical Center Branch in the original "Pennies-by-the-Inch" facility on 11th Avenue. Their church service only increased following Bob's retirement: they served a humanitarian service mission to Romania and later as first counselor to the president and assistant to the matron in the Salt Lake Temple. Bob and Judy built a loving family. Bob is survived by his wife Judy, his children Catherine, Robert (Jen), Christine (Keith), Stephen (Mary), Rebecca, and John (Lori), and twelve grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Caroline Clive, Midge Evans (Kirk), Catherine Poelman Weight (Harold), and Sylvia Edwards. Bob is preceded in death by his brothers Weston (Jaroldeen) and Bill (Kathy), his brothers-in-law Clifford Clive and Lloyd Poelman, and his grandson Torsten Nielsen. The funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Hilltop Ward Chapel at 589 East 18th Avenue in Salt Lake City. To watch the services live and view the recording, please refer to Larkin Mortuary's website. Visiting time will be held from 6:30 - 8:00 pm at the chapel on Friday evening, May 12, 2023 and again from 10:30 - 11:30 am at the chapel prior to the service. Interment is at the Salt Lake City Cemetery at 3:00 pm. Instead of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Humanitarian Aid Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Thora (?) Edwards

Class of 1924. A photograph of a female student with the surname of Edwards appears in the BYH section of the 1924 Banyan. Source: 1924 BYU Banyan yearbook, BYH section. ~ ~ ~ ~ At that time there were 5 female students with the surname of Edwards. --Maude Edwards was a BYU Freshman in Education in 1923. --Minerva Edwards was a BYU Sophomore in summer school in 1923. --Nell Edwards is listed as a 1st Year BY High student in 1924. --Ilez Edwards is also listed as a 1st Year BY High student in 1924. --Thora Edwards of Charleston, Utah, is not listed as a BY High student during 1923 or 1924, but is shown as a BYU Freshman in 1925, implying that Thora graduated from high school in 1924. Thora comes closest, but this is very iffy. Background sources: BYU/BYH Annual Catalogues for the School Years 1923-24, 1924-25, and 1925-26.
