Van Cott, John Waldemar

John and Emily Van Cott |

Faculty & Staff, early 1960s. John Van Cott. Biology teacher. HIS OBITUARY: John Waldemar Van Cott, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at the ripe old age of 94, surrounded by his loving family. He was born to Frank Victor Van Cott and Annie Anderson Van Cott on June 24, 1911, one of six children, and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. As active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, John Van Cott and Emily Schoenhals were married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 12, 1937, followed by a honeymoon on their Harley-Davidson to the Pacific Coast. They loved the outdoors -- skiing and hiking in the mountains. Their family came first, and they loved nothing more than piling the kids into their station wagon and heading for the ocean. John worked for the U.S. Grazing Service and Forest Service. During WWII he was a Sergeant and then Lieutenant in police work on the Atomic Bomb Project in Washington. After the war, with his degree from Utah State University and his love of nature, he opened his own business, the Van Cott Pet Shop & Aquarium. In 1960, he moved his family to Orem/Provo where he taught biology at BY High School. He then moved on to Brigham Young University in the Botany Department for the next 16 years. He retired in 1976 and went on to complete and publish his dream project -- the book, Utah Place Names. He had a testimony of the gospel, which he demonstrated by example. He served in the Bishopric, quorums and auxiliaries of the church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Emily Schoenhals of Salt Lake City, and his oldest daughter, Ann Van Cott (Jim) Palmer of Kentucky. He is survived by three of his four children, John F. (Trudy) Van Cott, Robert J. (Barbara) Van Cott, and Linda Van Cott. He also has 24 lovely grandchildren and 44 great- grandchildren, with 3 more on the way. He was extremely grateful for the love and support of his family and friends, and said often in his later years, "I've had a wonderful life." Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 11, 2006 at the Sharon Ward Chapel in Orem. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery next to his beloved wife. [Provo Daily Herald on March 9, 2006.] |

Shirley and Giles Baum |
||
Class of 1957. Shirley Van Cott. She married Giles G. Baum. ~ ~ ~ ~ "I loved my years at BY High. Even though I also went to public schools, I wish that my parents had left me at the B Y schools the whole time. I started there in Kindergarten and went through Third Grade. After some years in public schools, I came back in the Ninth Grade and again in the Eleventh and Twelfth grades. I felt that I fit in with the others and I felt at peace there. To others who went there all the time, maybe they won't understand, but I loved the teachers and the students and I felt that I really belonged." ~ ~ Shirley Van Cott Baum @2007 ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Shirley Ann Van Cott Baum, 1939–2017. Shirley Ann Van Cott Baum returned home to our Heavenly Father peacefully in her sleep on the morning of May 18, 2017 from natural causes. They were married on June 29,1955 and sealed for eternity on May 4, 1956 in the Manti, Utah LDS temple and built a beautiful life together raising five children at their home in Orem, Utah. Shirley graduated from B.Y. High in the Class of 1957 and earned an Associate’s degree in Graphic Art from UVCC. An accomplished artist, Shirley was an active member of the LDS church and held many callings throughout her life. She was a student of the scriptures and developed a strong testimony of the gospel. She made love the dominant quality of her life, in every way teaching our Savior’s gospel by her example. We love you Mom and will miss you every day until we’re together again! You’re a keeper! Van Moorlehem and Ellen Venie Pinegar Van Moorlehem. ~ ~ ~ ~ Tricia has three children, four grandchildren & three great-grandchildren. "None of my classmates knew that I was a year younger than them. I skipped 10th grade. I'll be 68 next month; I was still sweet 16 when I graduated BYH. ~ ~ ~ ~ One of my favorite BYH teachers was Mr. Allman who taught biology & Spanish. So, I had him two years in a row! He talked two of us girls into going to the Prom with guys from South America who spoke little English....it was fun! The only thing more fun was when our band won the chance to go to Vegas. We marched in our WOOL uniforms for miles in Vegas in hot weather for Helldorado Days! I played first chair flute the two years I was there. ~ ~ ~ ~ Our family name was Van Moorleghem when my grandfather, Isadore F. Van Moorleghem, came through Ellis Island, NY in 1896. He was born in Nokere, Belgium in 1876. He was 20 years old when he immigrated. The family name was changed to Van Moorlehem when they settled in Canada. Several weeks ago I finally found the original ship's manifest with my grandfather's name on it! I've been looking for it for five years. No one else had been able to find it. Needless to say, I am ecstatic with joy! Now I am beginning to find relatives! In Belgium they still spell our name Van Moorleghem, along with several families in the States here. My father and four of us children were all born in Canada. My youngest sister, Nancy, was the only member of the family born in the U.S., besides my mother. @2008 |
