Her parents are Willis K. Spafford & Ann E. Stubbs Spafford. On September 4, 1917, Marie married Arnold Edgar Robison, Sr., BYH Class of 1913 (see his alumni profile). She participated in the Utah State Fair beauty pageant in October 1914. They had three children: a son, Arnold E. Robison Jr.; two daughters, Betty Jane Robison and Rosalie Robison. Dr. Arnold E. Robison died on March 23, 1941 at the age of 46, of a coronary occlusion. Marie Spafford Robison died on December 9, 1959 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. Her interment, Provo Cemetery, Provo, Utah.

Source: BYH Yearbook 1911. ~ ~ ~ ~ Willis Earl Spafford was born on November 14, 1891 in Provo, Utah. His parents were Willis Kelsey Spafford and Elizabeth Ann [or Anne E.] Stubbs Spafford. He married twice: First, to Tessie Harmon, on June 7, 1917; she died on May 6, 1918 in Provo, Utah. He second married Belle Smith [full name: Marion Isabelle Sims Smith] on March 23, 1921, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Belle Sims was born on October 8, 1895 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her parents were John Gibson Smith and Hester "Tessie" Sims Smith. She was a teacher in the BYU Training School in the 1920s. Belle and Willis were the parents of two children, Earl Smith Spafford and Mary Spafford Kemp. A life-long Utah resident, she died on February 2, 1982 at the age of 86. She became a very prominent Utah women's leader [see her profile]. Willis Earl Spafford died on January 26, 1963 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Basketball, Baseball, Football, Lettermen, Band, Chorus, Legislative Forum, Debate. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Frederick Amtoft Spalding, age 70, of Altamont, passed away August 30, 2005, in American Fork. He was born June 14, 1935, in Vineyard, Utah, to Thomas Frederick and Edith Christeen Amtoft Spalding. He was a graduate of Brigham Young High School where he held honors in football and music. It was here that he met and later married Lois Helen Higgins. Together they had seven children. This marriage ended in divorce. In 1969 he met and married Dianna Lyn Addley of Duchesne, Utah. They were sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together they had three children. Fred had a lot of opportunities and experiences in his life. At 14 years he was an apprentice carpenter of Union #1495. He built roofs and worked on the BYU Football Stadium. At 16 he worked at Backman Foundry making cores for molds, and he was a drafter. At 19 he built reinforced concrete chimneys for Pullman Kellogg Co. Ltd. He built chimneys in Canada, Newfoundland, and across the United States. He worked in the oil fields as a geologist. He also worked as a welder and later in life he became a federal officer for the US Forest Service. He had a degree in Drafting, Robotic Engineering, and Petroleum Technology. He was a certified welder. Fred also held a CDL and drove trucks. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, reading, art and music. He is survived by his wife, Dianna, of Altamont; children, Sheri Denise Lilliard, Debra Kaye Delaney, Kelly Kappelman, James Milton Delaney, Chris Delaney, Brian Delaney, Wynnde Lee Whittier, Forrest Amtoft Spalding, Christene Edith Macklin, a sister, Donna May Claxton, and a brother, Thomas Lloyd Spalding [BYH Class of 1958~Honorary]. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, and a few great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Stephen Gregory Spalding, and his sisters, Joyce Spalding and Beth Edith Backman. Funeral services were held Friday, September 2, 2005, at the Lake Fork LDS Church in Altamont, Utah. Interment, Strawberry Cemetery in Duchesne. [Provo Daily Herald, September 1, 2005.]

Pleasant, Utah. [As of 1998] ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Donna Jean Jones Speakman Thomas Moore passed away January 14, 2007, after suffering many years of ill health. She was born April 24, 1923, in Provo, Utah and was the eldest of two daughters born to Martha Ellertson and Byron Jones. Donna and her sister Sammie were later adopted after their mother married pharmacist Eugene C. Speakman. Donna was a beautiful and graceful person, with a quick sense of humor. She was popular in school and participated in many activities. One of her greatest joys was cheerleading for BYU High School. Donna married Harry Thomas in 1941. Harry was a member of the 10th Mountain division during WWII and was killed in Northern Italy in April 1945. After the war, Donna met Sterling Russell Moore. The two had encountered one another years before as they had been blessed in the same ward on the same day. They were married on December 23, 1946. They had a daughter, Marty and a son, Kelly, and enjoyed a rich, happy life for the next 60 years, until Russell's death in March 2006. Donna attended St. Mark's School of Nursing during WWII. She was a talented and devoted nurse working in many capacities. She served as Utah County's first public health nurse, and for ten years worked for Drs. Richard Reece, and Roy Hammond. She continued her profession at BYU Health Center and later the MTC until her retirement in 1988. Donna and Nadine Kimball, her best friend and co-worker, were among the first Nurse Practitioners in Utah. Donna and Nadine were pioneers in their field creating and teaching the first Nurse Practitioner courses at BYU, and laying the foundation for what is now the Family Nurse Practitioner graduate program. Donna loved life and lived it to its fullest. She and Russ had their most memorable times when traveling with her sister Sammie and husband Jim, and cousin Betty and husband Tom Powelson to places such as Fiji, Hawaii, Mexico and Europe. She had many lifelong passions including: doll making, sewing, and reading, but was happiest when spending time with her family. Donna is survived by her children, Marty (Allen) Young and Kelly Moore; sister Sammie (Owen) Oldroyd-Stayner, brother Dr. Gene E. (Elaine) Speakman, half-brother Robert B. Jones, brother-in-law Donald (Charlene) Moore, Portland Or; grandchildren, Staci (Michael) Schoenfeld, Tyler (Sarah) Young, Alicia Moore, and Kyle Moore; great-grandchildren Max and Lucy Schoenfeld, and Oakley Moore. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the wonderful nurses, doctors and staff at The Courtyard Assisted Living Center, Orem Nursing and Rehabilitation, and the Cardiac and Hospice units at UVRMC. [Provo Daily Herald, January 17, 2007]. ~ ~ ~ ~ STERLING'S OBITUARY: Sterling Russell Moore passed away on March 16, 2006, of causes related to a heart attack suffered on March 12, 2006. Russ was born March 31, 1923, in Provo, Utah, to John Sterling Moore and Marguerite Cluff Moore. He was the eldest of two sons. During The Depression, Russ' family moved to Southern California. There, he and his brother, Don (Brig), were in the same grade and were best friends. During WWII, the brothers joined the Air Force together and were both stationed in England, where Russ proudly served from 1942 to 1945. Following the war, Russ returned to Provo and studied Civil Engineering at BYU. He married Donna Jean Jones Speakman Thomas on December 23, 1946. The couple believed they were meant to be together, particularly because they had been blessed in the same church on the same day. They had a daughter, Marty; and, ten years later, a son, Kelly. Russ worked in management at Geneva Steel for thirty-five years. After retiring, he briefly worked in real estate. Russ was a spry 82-year-old who enjoyed drawing and painting cowboys and horses, fly-fishing on the Provo River, gardening, and golf. He is survived by his wife, Donna; daughter, Marty (Allen) Young; son, Kelly; brother, Donald (Charlene) Moore, of Portland, OR; grandchildren: Staci (Michael) Schoenfeld, Tyler (Sarah) Young, Alicia Moore, and Kyle Moore; great-grandchildren: Max and Lucy Schoenfeld, and Oakley Moore; aunt, Louise Hogan, of Salt Lake. James died January 17, 1991, at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City of cancer. James Oldroyd was age 65, a longtime Idaho Falls resident and prominent businessman. He was born July 27, 1925, in Provo, Utah, the son of Terry J. Oldroyd and Josephine Herman Oldroyd. He grew up in Provo, where he attended BYU Elementary, and Brigham Young High School. While he was in high school he was an all-state basketball player for two years. He graduated from Brigham Young University. He served in the Coast Guard during World War II. He married Sammie Speakman [BYH Class of 1943] September 12, 1944, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived in Salt Lake City for several years and moved to Idaho Falls 27 years ago, where he founded Meikle-Oldroyd Insurance Agency, which later merged to become United Agencies. He served as president of the corporation until he retired in 1989. He was a past president of the Idaho Falls Kiwanis Club, was a member of the Elks Club and the Idaho Falls Country Club. He was an active sportsman and especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, and boating. Surviving James are his wife, Sammie Oldroyd, Idaho Falls; three sons, Dr. J. Michael Oldroyd, Idaho Falls; Jerold (Jerry) G. Oldroyd and Todd S. Oldroyd, both Salt Lake City; brothers, Bud Oldroyd, Provo; David Oldroyd, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Paul Oldroyd, Orem; Tom Oldroyd, Houston, Texas; six grandchildren. The family suggests memorials to the Hematology-Oncology Department of the University of Utah Medical Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. Owen was born in Malad City, Idaho on February 28, 1919 to Steve and Kate Stayner. He attended public schools in Malad City, graduating as salutatorian of his high school class. He excelled in football and basketball of Malad High School where he also graduated from the LDS Seminary program. He remained a devout sports fan and LDS member throughout his life. His family never called him during Jazz games. He was also active in the Boy Scouts of America, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He served as Scoutmaster following his service in the United States Navy during World War II, where he served as quartermaster in the Pacific Theater. Owen attended Utah State Agricultural College where he was affiliated with the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He married his childhood sweetheart, Leonore Woozley, also from Malad City in January of 1941 at Brigham City, Utah then moved to Inglewood, California where he was employed by J.C. Penney. Owen and Leonore had their marriage solemnized in the Mesa, Arizona LDS Temple in 1950. Lenore passed away in 1993. Owen married Sammie Oldroyd in September of 1995 in Salt Lake City. Sammie has been a devoted wife and helpmate and they have enjoyed many wonderful years together. Owen was considered and "Ambassador of Peace and Goodwill" both in the world of business as well as in his many callings in the Latter-day Saint faith. He was employed by General Telephone Directory Company in California, Illinois and Pennsylvania, served in many executive positions and was considered a pioneer in the development of the telephone directory classified advertising, receiving the esteemed "Vince Lombardi" award for outstanding management achievement. Owen was a very devoted husband and father and will be deeply missed by his family. He is survived by his wife, Sammie; his sons Stephen (Phyllis), Scott, Mark (Deena), and Owen (Becky); his stepsons Mike (Tera), Jerry (Laura), and Todd (Debra). Owen had a number of grandchildren and step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his older brother Steven Dale Stayner and younger sister, Donna England. Owen faced many adversities in his life and often read the biography of Winston Churchill to bolster his courage. His motto was "Never Give In or Give Up". Born February 13, 1916 in Provo, Utah to Frank Speckart and Harriet Richmond Speckart. Married Frank Sutherland. Active member of the LDS Church, member of the D.U.P., and enjoyed a lifelong interest in hobbies and crafts. Orlene died peacefully at the home of her oldest son, Garry. We will all cherish the memory of her kind and gentle spirit. Brooks 1931-2015. JoAnn Spencer Brooks, 84, of Cottage Grove passed away of natural causes on July 25, 2015. She was born May 8, 1931 in Mount Pleasant, Utah to Harold Spencer and Fern Olsen Spencer. JoAnn graduated from Brigham Young High School in Provo, Utah,in the Class of 1949, and attended two years at Brigham Young University. JoAnn was co-owner and manager of restaurants for 14 years in Tillamook, Oregon. She built and ran Suds-N-Shine car wash on Davidson Avenue in Cottage Grove from 1993 to 2003. She had been retired since the sale of the car wash. She enjoyed collecting and refinishing antiques, and doing needlepoint and counted cross stitch. She sewed clothes for herself and others, receiving many awards for her sewing. She loved interior decorating. On September 12, 1953 in Tillamook, she and Jack N. Orr were married. They later divorced. On March 17, 1991 in Cottage Grove, she and Bob Brooks were married. They later divorced. Survivors include three sons, Jim Orr of Cottage Grove, Marti Orr of Cottage Grove, and Sam Orr of Everett, Washington, two brothers, Richard Spencer of Salt Lake City, Utah and Ron Spencer and wife Pat of Maple Valley, Washington, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Norman Darwin Spencer attended elementary and junior high school at the Brigham Young Elementary and Brigham Young Junior High School, before finishing his high school education elsewhere. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Mapleton, Utah: Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away peacefully September 24, 2009 in Provo, Utah at the age of 77 with his wife and family at his side. Norman was born May 11, 1932 in Salt Lake City to Savona and Mary Johnson Norman. His mother, Mary, died giving birth. Norman's Aunt and Uncle Josie and Vord Spencer later adopted him. Norman married his high school sweetheart, Colleen Nielsen, on January 4, 1952 in the Salt Lake City Temple for time and all eternity. Norman attended elementary and junior high school at the old Brigham Young Academy and went on to graduate from Provo High School where he met his sweetheart Colleen. Norman retired from the Provo Post Office in 1988 with over 30 years of service. He also worked several part time jobs to help support his family. Norman loved taking his family camping and enjoyed the outdoors. He loved technology and electronic gadgets, during his 77 years of life he went from wind up clocks to solar powered atomic watches and high speed internet. He taught his children to cultivate work ethics by laboring on their small farm. Norman dutifully fulfilled many church obligations throughout his life. Norman was preceded in death by his son Paul David Spencer (December 8, 1997). With loving memory he is survived by his wife Colleen and their four children: Michael Darwin (Pat), Steven Craig (Linda), Douglas Kay and Sherri Lynn Whiting (Paul); 23 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and a sister Jo-Ell Brienholt. (See his photo on Class of 1949 reunion page for 2003.) ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Richard Harold Spencer, 89, of Sandy, Utah died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, July 10, 2022, under hospice care at his daughter's home in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Richard was born on August 1, 1932, in Mt. Pleasant, Utah to Leo Harold Spencer and Fern Olson Spencer. Richard lived a full and rewarding life. He graduated from Brigham Young High School in Provo Utah in the Class of 1950. He then enlisted in the Navy, serving his country proudly and using his GI Bill to enroll in and graduate from Brigham Young University. While at BYU, Richard met Patricia Steimle, whom he married in the Salt Lake City Temple in 1956. They had 3 children: Deborah Carole of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Michael Richard of Mt. Pleasant, Utah, and Linda Kay of Orem, Utah. They have provided Richard with 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Upon his graduation from BYU in June of 1960, Richard worked at Kennecott Copper until taking a job at Signetics in California. After retirement, he drove 18-wheelers across the country and had many stories to tell about those trips. He even got his pilot's license and spent many happy hours in his Piper Arrow. But his true passion was cars. He restored a Pantera and was a lifelong dedicated Corvette owner. He owned a few in his lifetime. Rest easy Dad, and drive as fast as you want. There are no speed limits in Heaven! No services will be held. Cremation is under the direction of Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls. Class of 1952. Delbert Sperry. Baseball, Tennis, Chorus. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Delbert Joy Sperry, 78, Husband, Father, Grandfather and Brother, passed away on November 27, 2012. He was born January 20, 1934 in Provo, Utah, the son of Dr. Sidney B. Sperry and Eva Lila Braithwaite Sperry. Delbert attended Provo City Schools and graduated from B.Y. High School in the Class of 1952, and subsequently from Brigham Young University. On May 22, 1964, he married his sweetheart, Anne-Julie Stangeland in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Delbert and Julie were married for 48 years. Delbert had a number of managerial jobs, including Manager, B.Y.U. Audio-Visual Center. He helped set up the Navajo Indian Tribe pre-school program, LDS Church Indian Social Worker, Utah County Welfare Supervisor, and the job that he loved the most, Utah's first Ambulance Coordinator with the Utah Department of Health, and the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. He set up a number of new ambulance services, including Springville and Spanish Fork. He loved working with the E.M.T.'s and paramedics, and had many very special friends throughout Utah. He retired in 1996, after 26 years with the State of Utah. Delbert was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served a mission to the Western States Mission from 1954-56. He was a ward financial clerk, teacher and home teacher, and loved his many church friends. Delbert wanted to give thanks to his special friends, Dr. Keith Hooker, Dr. Ronald Badger, and Dr. Richard K. Olsen who made it possible for Del to have those few years with his family and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Anne-Julie of Provo; his children: Anne (Steve) Kingsolver of Orem; Erika (Brad) Hatch of South Jordan; and seven beautiful grandchildren: Stephanie, Sarah, Brett, Brandon (serving in the Ventura California Mission), Amanda, Rachael and William. Sisters: Elaine Fish, of Las Vegas; Phyllis Bytendorp, St. George; Karen Grant, Salt Lake City; Brothers: Richard, Orem; and Brent of Salt Lake. Delbert is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Sidney B. and Eva Lila Sperry, and by his brothers, Lyman and Arlyn. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the LDS Chapel, 3050 Mohave Lane, Provo, Utah. Friends may call at the church from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to services. His interment, Mound City, Pulaski County, Illinois. Claire Speirs Thornberry died on January 22, 1988 in Glendale, California. Her interment, Glendale, California. Claire is a sister of Vivian Speirs Hitchcock, also BYH Class of 1910.

Archie and Maud Spilsbury

BY Academy High School Commercial Class of 1900. Archie Spilsbury. He received a diploma from the Commercial program on May 31, 1900. Source: Deseret Evening News, June 2, 1900. In his teens Archie attended Brigham Young Academy. He met his future wife, Maud McArthur, a star athlete, at BYA. Maud, walking in Provo with a friend, saw Archie for the first time and whispered, "That's the man I'm going to marry." Eventually the couple met, and when Maud returned home, Archie drove to Mt. Pleasant to court her. After three months of marriage, Archie received a mission call to St. Louis, Missouri. In his absence, Maud gave birth to a baby boy, who was almost two years old when Archie returned. Cattle ranchers by trade, the Spilsburys moved from Toquerville to Cedar City so their four children could attend school.
