Bonnie and Daniel Decker

Class of 1950. Bonnie Beardall. Quill & Scroll, French Club. Married Daniel L. Decker in 1954. Her parents are Warren L. Beardall [BYH Class of 1924] and Naomi Smith Beardall of Mapleton, Utah. Warren and Naomi had two children: Bonnie Beardall Decker [BYH Class of 1950], Provo; and John Smith Beardall (Karen), Vienna, Virginia. Children of Bonnie Beardall Decker: Kenneth Decker, Renae Decker Everett, Ralph Decker, Max Decker, Eldon Decker, Keith Decker, and Lois Decker Brown. @2007 ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Bonnie Beardall Decker. Practical. Brilliant. Generous beyond measure. Bonnie Beardall Decker, age 84, was all three. The daughter of a professional educator, Bonnie had a natural gift for teaching and learning. After graduating from Brigham Young High School in 1950, she attended Brigham Young University where she received a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in microbiology. Her choice of studies not only landed her the man of her dreams (a handsome fellow student named Daniel Decker whom she met in the chemistry beaker lab where she blew glass), but it prepared her for the greatest work of her life — motherhood. Bonnie read bedtime stories to her seven children such as “The Adventures of Jimmy the Microbe,” and she taught them how to properly sanitize a dish. More importantly, she exemplified the virtues of patience and determination as she lovingly nurtured her children until her very last moment on this earth (December 2, 2016). Bonnie and her husband, Daniel, worked tirelessly for their family, a church they loved, and a gospel they believed in whole heartedly. They were married in the Salt Lake City temple in 1954. Forty-one years later they served a full-time LDS mission together in Seattle, Washington. Other LDS church callings that held a special place in Bonnie’s heart were cub scout den mother, Spanish microfiche extractor, and family history consultant (of the superhero variety). Bonnie was the kind of person who laughed so hard it made her cry. She was the kind of wife who loved and cared deeply for her husband of 62 years (with an eternity to come in heaven). She was the kind of sister who never stopped enjoying the comradery of her brother. She was the kind of mother who did laundry and dishes until her chapped hands bled and then used those same hands to scratch her children’s backs at night until they fell asleep. She was the kind of grandma and great-grandma who threw amazing family reunions and never forgot to send birthday cards. Bonnie is greatly mourned by her husband, Daniel; her brother, John Beardall; her seven children and their spouses: Kenneth & Mary Decker, Renae & Randy Everitt, Ralph & Tracy Decker, Max & Lisa Decker, Eldon & Kathrin Decker, Keith & Karen Decker, Lois & McKay Brown; her 47 grandchildren and their spouses; and her 26 great-grandchildren. A viewing will be held at the LDS Provo Peaks 2nd Ward church (965 North Locust Lane, Provo, Utah) Friday, December 9th, 2016 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. at the same location. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either BYU or the LDS missionary fund. Bonnie was, above all, very practical. Condolences may be sent at www.wheelermortuaries.com. Warren and Naomi Beardall

Class of 1924. Warren L. Beardall. Source of surname: 1924 BYU Banyan yearbook, BYH section. Unfortunately, the yearbook gave only surnames for most class members. ~ ~ ~ ~ "Looking at the page on the BYH website showing the BYH Class of 1924, I see that my father Warren L. Beardall, is the 'Beardall' student in the photograph. ~ ~ ~ ~ Collegiate Grad of BYU, Class of 1928. Warren Beardall. He received a BS Degree in Accounting & Business in 1928. Source: Annual Record, B.Y. University, Book 10, page 486. ~ ~ ~ ~ Warren Beardall was born in 1908 in Springville, Utah, a son of George L. Beardall and Emma E. Childs Beardall. He had one sister, Anna Beardall, born in 1911 [BYH Class of 1929?]. Warren initially attended Springville High School, where he studied music and business. His parents owned and operated Beardall's Service Grocery store in Springville. Since Warren was studying music with the faculty of BYU and was spending two or three days a week in Provo, he switched to Brigham Young High School to save time. He took high school and college classes simultaneously. He was on the fast track when he attended BYH, taking college courses along with meeting his high school graduation requirements. He worked summers in Salt Lake City, commuting every day by train. He was studying business to help his family in their grocery business, and he had some serious LDS Church responsibilities at a very early age -- he was ordained a Seventy in the Melchizedek Priesthood as a teenager. He graduated from BYH in 1924. He then graduated from BYU in 1928 at age 20 with a degree in accounting. He served an LDS mission in California. He returned in 1930 from his mission and worked in the wholesale grocery business in Provo. In 1931 he met and married Hannah Naomi (Naomi) Smith, and in 1932, their first child was born, Bonnie Beardall [BYH Class of 1950]. Warren Beardall later worked for a wholesale grocery business in Reno, Nevada, but returned to Utah and became an educator. He was principal of the Mapleton Elementry School in Mapleton, Utah, until his premature death in 1957 at the age of 49. ~ ~ ~ ~ [Warren LaVell Beardall was born on January 10, 1908 in Springville, Utah. His parents were George LaVell Beardall and Emma Elisa Childs. Warren married Hanna Naomi Smith on September 24, 1931 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died on May 21, 1957 in Provo, Utah. His interment, Evergreen Cemetery, Springville, Utah.] ~ ~ ~ ~ An interesting point in Warren's life: Another member of the BYH Class of 1924, 'Farnsworth' in the photograph, was Philo T. Farnsworth, the inventor of television. Warren Beardall and Philo Farnsworth were selected to play the parts of twin brothers in a play at BY High School. Images of this play are included in the film biography of Philo T. Farnsworth, which is shown occasionally on KBYU television. Warren Beardall is shown with Farnsworth in a photograph of that play. During those years Philo Farnsworth was seeking money to finance his invention, and at one point offered Warren Beardall a one-half interest in his invention, in return for enough money to buy a bus ticket to California. My father did not have the money and had to decline the offer. Farnsworth drew a schematic of his invention in Warren Beardall's physics textbook, which is unfortunately now lost." ~ ~ John S. Beardall jsb.nova@juno.com @2007 ~ ~ ~ ~ Warren graduated from BYH in the Class of 1924, then continued his education at BYU. [Provo Daily Herald, Monday, June 28, 2010] ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Eric "Rick" Marvin Beckham, 63, passed away in Provo on April 15, 2015, surrounded by his family, from complications of a lifelong battle with diabetes. Rick was born in Provo, Utah on September 12, 1951, the son of Ray and Ida Lee Beckham. He attended the BYU Laboratory School from kindergarten through his junior year of high school, when the school was closed. He then attended Provo High School for his senior year, graduating in 1969. He attended BYU for three years and later graduated with a bachelors degree in business from the University of Phoenix. Rick was intrigued with early computers. As a high school student, he volunteered after school at DHI Computing. This was during the time of IBMs punched cards and huge mainframe computers, long before the early personal computers. He began as a gopher but became a part-time employee during high school and college and a full-time employee after college. He helped pioneer a new DHI software program for hospitals in Wassau, Wisconsin. Rick served as an LDS missionary in Finland beginning in October 1970. He returned to BYU in 1973 and met Vicki Beal, from Merced, California, his future wife, who was an education major at BYU. They were married June 18, 1974 in the Cardston, Alberta, Temple, where his father was serving as mission president. In 1979, Rick and his family moved to Merced where, with his father-in-law, Steve Beal, he founded one of the early solar energy companies. He then went back to his technology roots and joined Dentomatics, a firm specializing in computer billing systems for dentists, and then moved to Systematics -- a large programming firm. He founded a magazine called Beckhams Freeway Guide that published a series of travel guides to help travelers on I-15 from Salt Lake City to San Diego. He also worked with the U.S. Census Bureau and in advertising and marketing. He finished his career as a public relations specialist at Merced College. Rick has led an interesting life. He never let his diabetes stop him from moving at full speed. He was honored in 2002 by the American Diabetes Association for 50 active years as a diabetic. As a high school student he worked in the summers on his cousin's cattle ranch in Arizona. Rick played many sports as a child, and, later, as an adult, he coached youth baseball and basketball teams and became a basketball referee in California. Along the way, he and his friends in Provo organized the PPGA (Provo Petunia Golf Association) and held an annual tournament for many years. Rick was also interested in music. His mother taught him to play the piano, and he played the trombone in his high school orchestras. He later became 1st chair trombone in the Merced Symphony Orchestra, and on several occasions was the featured soloist. He also founded and directed the three-day Music of Merced Festival for five years, bringing in musical groups from the western states for a series of concerts and performances to help raise money for the arts in Merced and to restore the Historic Merced Theatre. Rick designed and helped build their dream home in Merced more than 20 years ago. Active in the LDS Church, he served as a scoutmaster and youth leader, priesthood leader, Sunday school teacher and pianist. He was a popular early-morning seminary teacher. His students loved him because of his teaching abilities, positive attitude, and pranks and antics. His children talk about his great sense of humor, telling jokes, April Fools Day pranks, helping them with their homework, coaching their sports teams, taking them to school activities, and family vacations. He and Vicki enjoyed traveling to new places, including Europe and Africa. His life was centered around his family, church, music, and sports. Vicki passed away June 23, 2010, and is buried in the American Fork cemetery near her parents. Rick moved back to Provo at that time and has lived in the area since. Rick was preceded in death by his wife, Vicki Lyne Beal, and his mother, Ida Lee Beckham.
