Marcia Ann & Robert Ludlow

Class of 1963. Marcia Ann Nelson. Debate, Oratory, Band, Ladies Glee Club, Honor Society President, Model U.N., Seminary Graduate, Pep Club, Thespians, F.H.A., Spanish Club. BYU BS Elementary Education 1968. Married Robert C. Ludlow, DDS-R. @2008 ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Marcia Ann Nelson Ludlow, December 23, 1945 - December 5, 2017. Marcia Ann Nelson Ludlow passed away at her home in Modesto, California on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 after battling chronic kidney disease for nearly 20 years. She was 71 years old. Marcia Ann was born on December 23, 1945 in Logan, Utah to Joyce Rich Nelson and Roscoe Maughan Nelson, who on that day was still stationed in Okinawa, Japan after his service as a Marine Corps fighter pilot during World War II. Marcia Ann dearly loved her brothers Stephen R. Nelson, Richard R. Nelson, Scott M. Nelson, Douglas R. Nelson, and sister Claire Marie Painter. Marcia Ann came of age in Provo, Utah where she excelled academically, was a state debate champion, and graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1963. She attended Brigham Young University (BYU) and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1968. She became a credentialed high school teacher and proponent of education throughout her life. It was at BYU that she met the love of her life and as she often said, "her most important gift," Robert C. "Bob" Ludlow. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year, having married in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on August 31, 1967. Marcia Ann will be remembered for living a life dedicated to the service of others. In addition to ongoing service to her church and community, she was a prolific writer of thoughtful notes and showed her love to neighbors and friends through homemade cinnamon rolls and pies. She never missed an opportunity to express her love because she was never satisfied with mere acquaintance — every dialysis nurse, hospital orderly or new face at church quickly became a close friend. She considered motherhood her highest calling and sacred duty. Marcia Ann helped all five of her sons attain the rank of Eagle Scout and her two daughters become accomplished musicians. She relished the time she spent with her grandchildren, hosting tea parties and reminding each of their great worth to her and to a loving God. Her faith in God was truly unshakable and she was a humble disciple of Jesus Christ with her whole soul. Marcia Ann approached the debilitating kidney disease that dominated the last two decades of her life with discipline, grace, and incredible strength. Despite two generous kidney donations, she was on dialysis for nearly 20 years. The family is incredibly grateful to the many doctors, nurses, technicians, and caregivers who loved and tirelessly attended to her for so many years. She is survived by her husband Robert C. Ludlow and their seven children: Diane Forsyth (Bruce), Robert N. Ludlow (Marianne), Thomas N. Ludlow (Heather), Nathaniel J. Ludlow (Shannon), Kathleen Sandford (Caleb), Andrew N. Ludlow, Matthew N. Ludlow (Monica). Bob & Marcia Ann have 26 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 9 at 11 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (731 El Vista Ave., Modesto, California). Friends may call at the church on Friday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. She will be interred at Lakewood Memorial Park. Memorial donations in Marcia Ann's name may be made to the Inherited Kidney Disease Research Fund, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, PO Box 571021, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27157. [Modesto Bee]

Source: The (Provo) Daily Enquirer, May 27, 1897. ~ ~ ~ ~ Mentioned as a continuing Normal student in the 1881 Principal's Report of Karl G. Maeser, The Territorial Enquirer, Provo, Utah, June 22, 1881. ~ ~ ~ ~ Faculty & Staff. Nels L. Nelson, English and Spanish teacher, 1883-1920. Fifth Principal of Brigham Young Academy from 1900 to 1904. He married Maude Noble , who was was born on February 1, 1879 in Kanab, Kane County, Utah. She died on January 9, 1954 in Downey, Bannock County, Idaho and was buried in Downey. Nels Lars Nelson married Maude on May 25, 1904 in Salt Lake City, Utah. An incident in the Onedia Stake Academy in Preston, Idaho: Mark Hart remembered his former teacher N. L. Nelson. "Man, how he could concentrate!" he recalled. "When he had his nose in a book he was gone. I whispered to a kid next to me. I'll bet I can sneak right out of that window and he'll never notice. "I inched over to the wall, like this, stopped and checked him -- he was still lost -- and then I inched along some more. I slipped out the open window, went around to the front steps, into the hall, then sneaked back into my seat. He didn't notice at all." ~ ~ ~ ~ After serving as principal at BY Academy in Provo, Nels Lars Nelson became a BYU English professor, and in 1904, he became the editor of a new periodical. It was called The Mormon Point of View. After only four issues the publication ceased. A single bound volume of The Mormon Point of View can be found in the UCLA Research Library. In 1898, Nels Lars Nelson had published Preaching and Public Speaking, an effort to provide useful advice and raise the level of preaching in the church. In 1904, he also published Scientific Aspects of Mormonism. Brother Nelson, usually known by his initials N. L., had a lively, inquiring mind and a vigorous, compelling style of writing. During its brief lifetime, The Mormon Point of View published nine articles, stories, or poems, including: --"Human Side of the Book of Mormon." Here Nelson explored the textual changes, mostly grammatical, in subsequent editions after 1830. Inevitably, he also addressed the nature of the translation and the presence of Bible passages in the Book of Mormon. Not the last word, this article is nevertheless provocative and worth reading. --"Learning to Read Up Hill." Someone complained that the new magazine was too difficult. Editor Nelson was unsympathetic. "I cannot and will not reduce the whole thing down to thin soup once more, to suit his watery mental digestion," he wrote. I wonder what he would say about the non-readers among us a century later, those whose intake of ideas comes from movies and television. --"The Spiritual Life." Analyzing several metaphors employed by Jesus, Nelson went on for 78 pages. =="The Harris-Anthon Episode." Martin Harris and Charles Anthon both told about the famous interview. Since Anthon contradicted himself, Nelson said, Harris is the more reliable. He was sufficiently satisfied after meeting to invest a sizeable sum of money in the publication of the Book of Mormon. --"The Mormon Family." Although plural marriage is briefly mentioned, the main point of this article is to praise the "fruitfulness" of Mormon families. A century later, when fertility in many countries is below the 2.1 required for replacement, we are awed as Nelson describes families of five to twelve children for each mother. -- A short story by a young woman in one of Nelson's classes rounded out the contents of the periodical's first and only volume. Nelson had hoped to sell two thousand copies, which would have returned a modest profit to him as editor. He did not come even close to his goal, and the venture failed financially. N. L. Nelson had built up a sufficient reputation for loyalty that the First Presidency gave his project their endorsement. But in their letter we notice a recognition of the financial risks. "As far as we are concerned, we should very much like to see a magazine published such as you have outlined; it would undoubtedly be a credit both to you as its publisher and to our community. But will it pay financially, and can it be done without financial injury to yourself and family? . . . To be frank with you, we are afraid it will not pay." They were right. After the fourth issue, completing the first volume, The Mormon Point of View folded.

Winnifred and Volie Mahaffey

Winnifred Joy Nelson. Uncategorized Other Student. BYU alumnae circa 1940. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Winifred Joy Mahaffey (Nelson) "Our Forever Teacher" Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Winifred Joy Mahaffey (Nelson) passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, friends, and caregivers, on Sunday, September 23, 2018 in Taylorsville, Utah. Winifred was born a 3 ½ lb. preemie in a log cabin on April 1, 1917 to Jesse and Jessie (Blackburn) Nelson. She was the oldest of seven children and spent her childhood riding her horse, Old Dan, through the landscape of Ferron, Utah. Winifred attended Westminster College until the passing of her father in 1936, when she returned home to assist her mother with her siblings. She continued her studies at Brigham Young Academy [University] where she gained her teaching certificate. Although the school advised the newly graduated students not to teach in their home town, Winifred returned to Ferron to begin her teaching career. She loved the experience! One highlight was teaching her youngest brother, Thad Nelson, in the fourth grade and she often affectionately reflected on his comment to her, "Give us a kiss, Sis!" Winifred was a natural-born teacher with an extreme passion and love for learning and for her students. Winifred lived a life of helping others and would spend her summers cooking for the ranch hands on her Aunt Sylva's ranch in Meeker, Colorado where she met her husband, Volie Jackson Mahaffey. Volie courted Winifred for four years before she finally agreed to marry him. They were married in Steamboat Springs, Colorado on January 23, 1943. The couple was blessed with eight children: Jon Granville (Nancy), Brian Nelson (Susan), Janet Elaine (Dale Weldon) Abersold, Kevin Bruce (Jodie), Candace Alene (Ray W., deceased) Rozycke, Julie, Jessie Lynne (Kevin V.) Smith, and Allison (Phillip) Banks. Winifred paused her teaching career to raise her family until the passing of her husband on November 15, 1960. She returned to teaching and spent many years changing the lives of her students, always striving to foster a love of learning. Winifred was an incredible asset to Granite School District for 26 years, retiring in 1985. Following her retirement, she pursued many hobbies including travel and photography. Her inquisitive mind and keen eye for nature's beauty were effortlessly reflected in her photographs. Winifred was a devoted protestant and active member of Wasatch Presbyterian Church where she was often found with a grandchild or two at her side. Winifred is survived by: her sister-in-law, Connie (Russell, deceased) Nelson; her youngest brother, Thad (Pat) Nelson; her eight children, twenty-seven grandchildren and sixty plus great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by: her husband, Volie; her parents, Jesse and Jessie (Blackburn) Nelson; her siblings, Nadine (Eddie) New, Betty (Clell) Hooton, Jean (Bird) Draper, Andrew (Rosalie) Nelson, Russell Nelson; and her son in-law, Ray W. Rozycke. A viewing will be held on Friday, September 28, 2018, from 6-8 pm at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, on 4760 South State Street in Murray. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at Wasatch Presbyterian Church, on 1626 South 1700 East, at 2:00 pm, with a viewing prior from 12:30-1:45 pm, followed by graveside services at Elysian Burial Gardens, on 1075 East 4580 South, Millcreek. Thank you to the staff at Legacy House in Taylorsville, the devoted caregivers, and all the professionals who cared for Winifred over the last few years.
