Mercer, Winston [John Winston]
Provo, Utah US

Winston and Ruth Mercer

Faculty & Staff. Beginning in 1947-48, and up to and including 1958, he taught English, French & Journalism at BYH. (See several photos of Mr. and Mrs. Mercer on the Class of 1949 reunions page.) ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: John Winston Mercer (Wick), 92, died June 16, 2012, due to complications from a fall. Winston was born in McGrath, Alberta, Canada, on January 29, 1920. His parents were Jared Alma and Annie Catherine Millard Mercer. After a few years in Canada, the family moved to Oakley, Idaho, where Winston grew up. He graduated from Oakley High and then moved to Provo where he attended BYU. Winston played the trumpet and while at BYU he played in the BYU band and also started his career of playing in dance bands. One summer he worked at Bryce Canyon playing in the dance band where he met his sweet future wife, Ruth B. Robison. As a child, he had contracted polio and always walked with a slight limp. This was not enough to keep him from athletic activities or from being drafted into the Army. He served his country in California and Fort Bliss, Texas. Winston and Ruth were married in 1945 in Texas. When he was released from the Army, he returned to teaching. He taught English, French and Journalism at BYU High School. He had many fond memories of this time and remembered many of his former students. After 13 years there, he went into the sales and insurance fields. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Alma Mercer, sister Janice Cranney. He is survived by one sister, Marjorie (J.D.) Evans of Lake Oswego, Oregon, his wife, Ruth, and seven children: Gary W (Susan) Mercer, Patricia (Sherlan) Ligman, Catherine (Randal) Brereton, Phillip (Karla) Mercer, Melinda Mercer, Susan Urie, and Randall Mercer. He has 19 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren. Winston loved his family. We all have fond memories of vacations, Sunday drives, and big family parties in the back yard. He had a sweet tooth and always had a stash of candy beside his recliner. Music was an important part of his life. He played his trumpet as long as he could and then switched to the keyboard. He was very clever and could easily write limericks and humorous poetry. He helped form the Civil Service Commission of Provo, and enjoyed his involvement with City government. He was a member of the LDS Church, and held many teaching positions in his ward. It was very hard for Winston to get around the last few years of his life, but he was very social and enjoyed his many friends at the Orem and Provo Senior Citizen Centers. Dad, we love and miss you, but we know you are enjoying a grand reunion with all your family who have passed on before you. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at the Berg Mortuary, 185 E Center Street, Provo, Utah. Family and friends may call from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., on the morning of the funeral service. Interment at Provo City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent through his obituary at www.bergmortuary.com [Provo Daily Herald, Tuesday, June 19, 2012]

Alton and Nellie Merrill

Class of 1933. Alton Merrill. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Alton Drysdale Merrill, grandson of Apostle Mariner Wood Merrill, and son of Amos Newlove Merrill and Eliza Merrill, passed away June 10, 2003 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born May 13, 1915 in Provo, Utah. Alton was the last surviving child of six brothers and sisters. He was married for 37 years to Dora Quist who preceded him in death. He later married Nellie Merrill and was married for 22 years. He served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Manchester, England. He was employed by the LDS Church Educational System in teaching LDS Seminary to over 5,000 high school students for over 40 years. He taught seminary in the following seminaries: Huntington, Utah 1940-43; Parowan, Utah 1940-1952; Springville, Utah 1953-1973. From 1973 to 1980 he was one of the first teachers to participate in the seminary homebound program, seeking out and finding those students that for many reasons were not able to attend the regular seminary class in their high schools. He went to individual students from the Point of the Mountain to Eureka, many days traveling 50 miles or more to teach students one on one. Alton graduated from BYU High School in 1933, from Brigham Young University in 1949 with a bachelors degree and from Brigham Young University with a masters degree in 1950. He is survived by his loving wife, Nellie Merrill, daughter April Melode (Bryon) Tahbo, stepson Richard (Annette) Hartman, stepdaughter Judy (Gerald) Morley and numerous grandchildren and great-grand-children. He was preceded in death by two sons, Alton David Merrill and mason Quist Merrill, three grand-daughters Diana Merrill, Lisa Apgood, and Doree Ann Lunnen. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 14, 2003 in Salt Lake City. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. [Published in the Deseret News, Thursday, June 12, 2003.]

Merrill, Amos Newlove

Merrill, Amos Newlove
Orem, Utah US

Amos Merrill

Administrator of BYU Laboratory Schools, 1912 to 1915 (or 1912 to 1921). Amos N. Merrill (Newlove). When Edwin S. Hinckley resigned as BYU counselor to President George H. Brimhall in 1915, Amos N. Merrill was appointed counselor to Pres. Brimhall and dean of the Church Teachers College until 1921. Born on March 15, 1875, in Richmond, Utah, he received a bachelor's degree in 1896 at Utah State Agricultural College, a master's degree in 1908 at the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. in 1926 at Stanford University. He joined the Brigham Young College (at Logan) faculty in 1902 and taught mechanical arts, biology, and agriculture. He was named professor of agriculture at BYU in 1910 and continued at BYU until his death in 1953. When called to the BYU presidency, he was said to have been serving as the "Principal of B.Y. High School" but Dr. William H. Boyle, Jr., served in that position from 1909-1910 to 1925-1926. It is likely that Amos Merrill served as head of the BYU Laboratory Schools, an administrative position in the BYU School of Education, rather than as Principal. After 1921 he became professor of secondary education, and Dean of the College of Education [so listed in 1943-44 Wildcat yearbook]. He also served on the Provo Board of Education and as president of the Utah Education Association. He was the author of a text of religious instruction titled, "Balance Wheels".

Joseph & Annie Merrill

Board of Trustees, 1939 to 1952. Joseph Francis Merrill was the son of Apostle Marriner W. Merrill and Maria L. Kingsbury, and was born at Richmond, Cache County, Utah, Aug. 24, 1868. He was baptized into the Church July 22, 1877. His first ordination to the Priesthood was to the office of a Teacher, and on Sept. 22, 1889, he was ordained an Elder by his father; he received the Priesthood of a Seventy Sept. 23, 1898, under the hands of Apostle Heber J. Grant. Brother Merrill was brought up on his father's farm in Richmond, where he attended the common schools till 1887, when he entered the University of Deseret as a normal student. He graduated from that institution in 1889, and in the fall of the same year he became a student in the University of Michigan, graduating in 1893 with the degree of Bachelor of Science. The summer of 1892 he spent as a student at Cornell University, and in the summer of 1894 he studied at the University of Chicago. In 1893-95 he was assistant professor of chemistry and physics in the University of Utah. During 1896-97 he studied physics and electrical engineering, in the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, and in the University of Chicago. After his return to Utah he resumed teaching again in the University of Utah; but after being elected Fellow in Physics in the Johns Hopkins University he went east once more and further continued his studies, till 1899, when he took the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the Johns Hopkins institution. An abstract of his doctorate thesis was published in the "Physical Review" for Feb. 1899. A later article by Dr. Merrill, embodying the results of original research was published in the same journal for March, 1900, an abstract of which article was also published in the "Physikalische Zeitshrift" of Germany. Doctor Merrill also served as professor of physics and electrical engineering in the University of Utah, and also principal of the State School of Mines, a department in the University. During his stay in Michigan, in 1892-93, he acted as presiding Elder of the "Mormon Colony" at Ann Arbor. In November, 1897, Elder Merrill was chosen as first assistant superintendent of the YMMIA of the Salt Lake Stake. He married Annie Laura Hyde, a daughter of Alonzo E. and Annie Taylor Hyde, June 9, 1898, which union was blessed with two children. During 1898-99 Brother Merrill and his wife labored as regularly anointed missionaries in Baltimore. Elder Merrill was looked upon as a conscientious Latter-day Saint and as a scholar of eminent ability. Elder Merrill served as a member of the General Board of YMMIA from 1927 to 1933. He was ordained an Apostle October 8, 1931 by President Heber J. Grant at the age of sixty-three. His ordination and placement in the Quorum of the Twelve were occasioned by the death of Elder Orson F. Whitney. One can only imagine the depth of discussions held between himself, and Elders James E. Talmadge, and John A. Widtsoe, contemporaries on the Twelve. Joseph F. Merrill died Feb. 3, 1952, at Salt Lake City.

In 1982 a group of Latter-day Saint physicians adopted the name to represent the highest ideals and ethics of health care. Today Collegium Aesculapium continues to welcome physicians, podiatrists, pharmacists, and dentists as active members. Other health professionals and pre-med students who approach medical service with high ethical and moral values are invited to join as associate members. Sponsored by the BYU Alumni Association and the College of Biology and Agriculture, the 400-member foundation primarily serves (1) physicians and their families, (2) students of medicine, and (3) the world community. Two conferences are held each year—an annual spring conference in Utah and a semiannual fall conference held elsewhere in the United States—providing a forum for medical expertise as well as social and spiritual exchange. "My husband has always accompanied me and enjoys the meetings, even though he is not in the health-care field," says Dr. Marian Brubaker, Collegium's current and first woman president. "While some of our topics may be strictly academic, since we do offer CME (continuing medical education) credit, there are always intertwined feelings reflecting gospel teachings."
