Barry Avery

Class of 1946. Barry Hulet Avery. He graduated from BYH on May 23, 1946. Source: 1946 BYH Graduation Exercises Program. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Barry Hulet Avery, March 1, 1928 ~ January 27, 2020 (age 91). Barry Hulet Avery, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, teacher, and friend passed away peacefully at his home on January 27, 2020. Barry was born March 1, 1928, in Snowflake, Arizona, the second son of Floyd and Sadie Avery. The Avery family moved to Kanosh, Utah, in 1936 and then settled in Provo in 1941. In Provo, Barry graduated five years later from BY High School in the Class of 1946. He served in the Netherlands Mission as a representative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1948 to 1951, and shortly after his return to Utah, he was drafted into the United States Army. Barry had a natural gift for languages, a talent that earned him an Army Intelligence assignment to Germany as an interpreter during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1954 and returned to Provo to continue his education at BYU. Barry married the love and joy of his life, Carol Westover, on May 12, 1955, in the Salt Lake Temple, and together they raised six children. He was immensely proud of his family and loved them unconditionally. Nothing pleased him more than to have his home filled with the sounds of his children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He and Carol attended every possible family event, from graduations and weddings to school performances to farewells and homecomings, often traveling great distances in support of their immediate and extended family. Barry started his working life as a chemical engineer, but in 1960 he accepted a teaching position at Juab High School in Nephi, Utah, a decision that marked the beginning of a 32-year career as science and math educator. In 1964, after earning his Master of Science degree from the University of Utah, Barry moved his family to Kaysville and began teaching at Clearfield High School. He retired from Clearfield in 1992, having shaped the minds and lives of thousands of students. From the early days of his childhood, Barry had an adventurous spirit and was always eager to tackle new challenges. As a teenager during the closing years of World War II, he joined the Civil Air Patrol and earned his pilot’s license so he could assist in the war effort. He took up boxing, played basketball, loved skiing and hunting and camping, and was a passionate fan of the BYU Cougars and Utah Jazz. He also had a deep love for Scouting and led many groups of young men on outings to the Uintahs, Yellowstone, the Tetons, and beyond. Barry was a master gardener whose weed-free garden and world-class produce were the envy of all who knew him. Barry was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in numerous positions throughout his lifetime. During his retirement years, he and Carol served two missions as a couple, first to Kortrijk, Belgium, and later in Birmingham, Alabama. They also spent 10 years as workers in the Bountiful Temple. Barry was both a gentleman and a gentle man. His quiet, steady strength was unwavering, as was his commitment to the people and things most dear to him. His work ethic was above reproach, and he was the consummate teacher. He also had a surprisingly sharp wit that would leave his listeners in stitches at the most unexpected moments. He was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Barry is survived by his wife, Carol; children Shara-Dawn Chambers (Peter) of Phoenix, Arizona; Keith Avery of Kaysville; Chris Titus (Ron) of Fruit Heights; Garth Avery of Kaysville; Carol-Lynne Hirschi (Joseph) of Marion, Illinois; and Lara-Anne Attanasio of Kaysville; his 44 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren; brother Condon Avery (Wilma) of Riverton; sister Sue Swain of Orem; sister Ara Jean Hiatt of Mt. Airy, North Carolina; sister-in-law Virginia Avery of Mesa, Arizona; sister-in-law Pamela Avery of Orem, Utah; and many, many nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Barry. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 1, 2020, at the Kaysville 13th Ward, 200 N. 875 E., Kaysville. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery. Barry’s family is deeply grateful for the incredible outpouring of love they’ve received through this difficult time. A very special word of thanks is extended to Stefanie and Ashlie of Atlas Homecare and Hospice, and especially to Barry’s granddaughter Kristy “Avery” Broadbent, whose tender, compassionate, and skilled care for Grandpa in his final days is a gift that can never be repaid. LeGrande & Pamela Avery

Class of 1960. John L. Avery. Concert Band, Concert Band Business Manager, Marching Band, Pep Band, Model U.N., Spanish Club, Science Club, Seminary Graduate, Senior Honor Panel, Honor Roll. ~ ~ ~ ~ His sister is Ara Jean Avery Hiatt, BYH Class of 1949. ~ ~ ~ ~ BYU BS Computer Science 1970. @2010 ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: John LeGrande Avery died at his home in Provo on August 10, 2013, after an eight-month battle with brain cancer. John was born in Provo on October 7, 1942, to Floyd Fay and Sadie Hulet Avery. He graduated from Brigahm Young High School in the Class of 1960. He is survived by his wife Pamela Cardon Avery, his eight sons and six daughters-in-law – Matt & Nicki, Brian & Chris, Danny & Staci, Peter, Andy & Sarah, Wes & Melissa, David & Jannet, and Alex – and 22 grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Ara Jean Hiatt and Sue Swain, and brothers Barry and Con. He was preceded in death by one sister, Dena Joyce, and one brother, Chad. John (or LeGrande or Bud) served two years as a missionary in New Zealand and continued to serve faithfully in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints his entire life in a variety of callings, most recently as an Executive Secretary in the Spanish Fork Young Single Adult Stake. He had a firm belief in and understanding of the Boy Scout program as it relates to the LDS Church. He influenced countless young men as a Boy Scout leader, helping many of them achieve the rank of Eagle - including his eight sons. He received many scouting awards including the Silver Beaver Award, one of the BSA’s highest honors. He loved making itineraries and lists and repacking cargo space prior to and during any outing involving a vehicle. He had a love-hate relationship with long road trips. Driving erratically fast (but amazingly avoiding any consequences) was his specialty. Dad‘s professional career was in Computer Engineering, but he preferred to spend his time in the outdoors hiking, fishing, camping, skiing, backpacking and bicycling. He was skiing when symptoms of the cancer were first noticed. He was also a faithful BYU fan and enjoyed a long tradition of attending football and basketball games with his family. John received wonderful care and attention from the staff of Horizon Home Health and Hospice for several months. We thank them all, along with his doctors Reichman, Gaufin, Clark and Rich. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 16, 2013 at 11:00 am in the Edgemont Sixth Ward Chapel, 4056 North 650 East, Provo, (the “Red Brick Chapel”). Family and friends may attend a viewing Thursday evening at the church from 6:00-7:30 pm and on Friday one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery under the direction of Olpin Family Mortuary, Pleasant Grove. Class of 1968 and 1969, graduating Junior. Barbara Jean Babb. Her parents: Gordon Rex Babb and Josephine Jantzon Babb. Barbara attended BYU in 1993. She married Curtis Thayne Johnson, BYH Class of 1967. Curtis passed away in April 2013. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER HUSBAND'S OBITUARY: HIS OBITUARY: Curtis Thayne Johnson - September 24, 1949 – April 30, 2013. Curtis Thayne Johnson, 63, peacefully passed away at home on April 30, 2013 from multiple complications secondary to liver failure while waiting for an organ transplant. Curtis was born on September 24, 1949. He was the first born of five to Thayne and Iris Johnson. During his childhood the family resided in Southern California where he is remembered as being an adventurous and active child who craved the outdoors. Thayne and Iris loved taking the children on frequent outings in the family trailer. Curtis delighted in being airborne, side by side with his father in the cockpit. He always longed to be a pilot, but the need for vision correction thwarted him from achieving this dream. Curtis and his dad enjoyed the scenic byways everywhere they traveled. As a father, he never missed the dirt road less traveled that took us into the unknown, where some of the best memories were made. The family relocated to Utah in the early sixty's where Curtis found the mountains irresistible. He summited his first mountain (Mt. Whitney) as a young teenager and later volunteered on the Mountain Rescue team as part of the BYU Alpine Club. Curtis found great joy tinkering with electronics and achieved his amateur license as a Ham radio operator. He is remembered for attempting to make his own hang glider, loving anything to do with water, and for his amazing marksmanship. Curtis graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1967, and obtained his Bachelors in Computer Science from Brigham Young University. He enlisted in the United States Army and served for 2 years before his honorable discharge at the rank of SP5. His polished typing and English skills influenced the General to "keep Curtis around", and as a result he was spared from being deployed overseas. Curtis was sealed for time and all eternity to his high school sweetheart, Barbara Jean Babb, BYH Classes of 1968-69, in 1970 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. They raised their four children in Pepperell, Massachusetts until 1985, when they returned to Provo, Utah. Curtis was recruited after graduation by Digital Equipment Corporation and then later for Wang Laboratories and Novell. His sense of adventure then led him on an entrepreneurial journey with the startup company DISX. He was truly passionate about his final job as the manager of the American Fork LDS Employment Center where he enthusiastically coached a team of missionaries to help others find gainful employment. Curtis was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was fondly nicknamed "sound guy", "Mr. Fix-it", "Papa Curt" or "BJ" by his ward family and friends. He eagerly accepted callings throughout his life, but his time spent serving the youth was always his favorite. He treasured his time spent with the Young Women at Camp Shalom and trekking with the Boy Scouts in the High Uintas. Curtis could be called by anyone, anytime, anywhere and he would be there to get the job done. We will never forget the countless hours he spent reading in his big Papa Curt chair and his never-ending quest for knowledge. He believed a spread sheet analysis should fix ANY problem. He had a deep love for music and enjoyed listening to his children and grandchildren practice and perform. We knew when the ward choir was scheduled to sing, because he would be giddy for days beforehand. We will miss the popcorn that he popped in his whirly pop nearly every day, the roar of the lawn mower at the start of every family gathering and the anticipation of snowfall as an excuse to fire up the 4-wheelers and attach the plow. He was our resident astrologist, librarian, weatherman, swim coach, "jump or dive" caller, water polo referee, dive judge, music critic and the best Santa's helper ever! Curtis is survived by his wife of 43 years, Barbara; his four children Michael (Wendy), Rebecca (David) Mullen, Matthew (Kristin), Megan (Bryan) Hepworth; his siblings Darla Rogers, Terri Lee (Jon) Burgener, Kevin (Elizabeth) and Brian. He will be greatly missed by his 13 grandchildren; McKenzie, Chase, KC, Cassidy, Alexis, Kiersten, Madilynn, David, Matisyn, Sammy, Emilyn, Abigail and Lucas. There are countless nieces, nephews, cousins, "adopted" children and grandchildren, and his best friend and ball of fluff, Kizzy, that will miss him dearly. Dean & Charlene Babcock

Class of 1960. Dean Babcock. Chorus, Poetry Contest. Son of Hyrum John Babcock and Lucille Morgan Babcock (they have four daughters and one son), and grandson of Hyrum & Anna Louise Traudt Babcock. Dean first married Violet Louise Jones, div. Second married Marilyn Jones, div. Married Charlene Milne-Shea. @2010 ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Dean Morgan Babcock, South Jordan, Utah - Our loving husband, father, grandpa, brother and friend, Dean Morgan Babcock, age 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on October 2, 2018. He courageously battled with Parkinson’s disease, fighting until the end. Dean was born on July 9, 1942 in Nampa, Idaho to Hyrum Babcock Jr. and Lucille Morgan Babcock. He was raised in Provo, Utah alongside his 2 younger sisters Mary (Bennett) and Carol (Hazel). As a boy he achieved great fulfillment in teasing (tormenting) his younger sisters. Dean spent his summers at his grandparents’ farm in Idaho and his Aunt Ida’s home in California. He was a hard worker and learned his work ethic while working on his grandparents’ farm. He loved all things outdoors; the foothills of Provo were his playground, where he got into plenty of mischief. In school Dean excelled in History, Poetry and Music. After graduating from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1960, he enlisted in the US Army where he proudly served his country. He then served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Northern States Mission. Dean loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and loved to share it with all that would listen. Dean married Marilyn Jones on May 1, 1971. They were later divorced in August of 1993. They raised 11 children and taught them all a love for music. Dean played the drums and had a beautiful singing voice. He was known for adapting the lyrics to countless songs, which he would lovingly sing to his kids. He loved to travel and took his family on countless road-trips, especially to Disneyland. He took every opportunity to teach his family, often turning learning into fun and games. Some of his greatest joys were playing “tackle box”, wrapping Christmas presents, updating 72-hour kits, and fishing and hunting with his kids. A few of his of favorite things were ice cream, sunflower seeds, Mountain Dew, his family, BYU football, fishing, hunting and gardening. He inherited his “green thumb” from his dad and was known for his countless fruit trees and beautiful gardens. Dean spent most of his career working for the Utah Farm Bureau where he was able to interact with many farmers whom he loved and loved him in return. Dean was a friend to all he met. He married his sweetheart, Charlene Milne-Shea on October 11, 1996 and was later sealed in the Oquirrh Mountain Temple. They built a life together and he was blessed to gain 4 additional children, whom he welcomed as his own, bringing the total to 15! Dean loved Charlene fiercely and they shared a love for the outdoors, all things Disney, gardening, dancing, traveling, and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. They served many LDS Missions together and touched the lives of many. They were blessed to travel to many countries where they loved handing out copies of the Book of Mormon in different languages. Dean loved being a grandpa and made each of his grandkids feel special. He particularly enjoyed taking them to the Hogle Zoo, Thanksgiving Point, Arctic Circle and the pumpkin patch. He was a master storyteller and was known for his ability to tell Uncle Remus stories. Dean was lovingly taken care of by his wife Charlene throughout his illness. Dean is survived by his wife Charlene, children Jeannette (David) Lee, Christine (Brian) Schramm, Genevieve (Ruben) Upshaw, MeriLynne (Steve) Michaelis, Daniel (Elizabeth) Babcock, David (Sheryl) Babcock, Carolyn (Ryan) Morris, Douglas (Wendy) Babcock, Laura (Richie) Dibble, Rebecca (Travis) Christiansen, Joy (Christian) Austin, Tiffany (Ben) Barlow, Anthony (Lisa) Schmidt, Holly (Scott) Jensen, Schery (Bradlee) Walters, 55 Grandchildren and 3 Great-Grandchildren.
