He was once acting principal of the BYU Laboratory School. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Elliot Castleton Howe passed to the next life February 24, 2009, with his family around him, six days before his 89th birthday. He was born March 2, 1920, in Salt Lake City to Florence Castleton and Charles Ralph Howe. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II, qualifying as a B-29 co-pilot just before the end of the war. After completing a B.A. and M.A. at Brigham Young University, he completed an Ed.D. at the University of Utah. He married his sweetheart Maralyne Haskell on August 25, 1948 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, and they celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary last year. They are the parents of nine children: Susan (Cless) Young; Carolyn; Michelle (Mel) Pyne; Jack (Kristin); Nancy (Greg) Bean; Joseph (Kjirsten); Ralph; Dale (Crystal); and Alan (Koleen). They currently have 34 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Elliot worked as an educator throughout his career, beginning as a fifth grade teacher at Maeser Elementary, then assistant professor of elementary education and acting principal of the BYU Lab School; and spending most of his career as a foreign language specialist, first for the Alpine School District and then twenty years for the Utah State Office of Education, traveling to Switzerland, France, Egypt, and Mexico in work assignments. He particularly loved Spanish, and spoke it whenever he could. After retiring, he and his wife taught English for a year at Nanjing Forestry University in China. Elliot had great faith and served in many capacities in the LDS Church: missionary in the Spanish-American Mission (1940-43); bishop of the Pleasant Grove Manila Ward (1960-65); president of the Texas Mission (1967-70); and in many other ward and stake callings. A long-time resident of Pleasant Grove, he loved family activities, BYU sports, hunting, nurturing his iris and rose gardens, growing grapes, apricots, apples, and peaches, attending the temple, and doing genealogy. He was known for his sense of humor, his hard work, and his humility. He is preceded in death by three children (Carolyn, Nancy, and Ralph), his parents, his brother Dale and his two sisters June H. Johnson and Janet H. Green. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Grove Ward Chapel, 455 East 200 South, Pleasant Grove. A viewing will be held Sunday, March 1, 2009 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove, and at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to services. Her parents were John William Howe and Martha Lorette Sperry Howe. Velma married Ferdinand Oliver Wald on December 31, 1925. Velma Howe Wald died on December 4, 1995 in Sandy, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Velma Howe Wald, died peacefully in her sleep December 4, 1995 at the age of 97. Born January 22, 1898, to John William Howe and Martha Lorette Sperry Howe, in Provo, Utah. She graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1917 and 1918. She graduated from Brigham Young University in 1925. She married Ferdinand O. Wald on December 31, 1925 in Salt Lake City, later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She was a very talented teacher and was a great music lover who was a member of the Tabernacle Choir for several years. She was a member of LDS Church who loved the gospel. Past president of the Opera Appreciation Club, and member of Daughter of the Utah Pioneers. Survived by son, Fred O.; daughter, Oletta Cummings, Salt Lake City; son, Leonard H., San Diego, Calif.; daughter, Lorna Flickinger, Orem; 23 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband, one son, Gordon Dean, and brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 9, 1995 at Union 2nd Ward, 1535 E. Creek Road. She was born June 23, 1928, in Many, Louisiana, to Julius Andrew and Mary Barksdale Raiford. Louisiana was her home until she married Robert James Howell August 16, 1946, in the Salt Lake Temple. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and over the years she held many positions in the various wards she attended, including the Park Ward and the Oak Hills 3rd Ward of Provo. She also served for many years in the Provo and St. George temples and loved the service. Mary was orphaned as a child and lived with various relatives. She secured her first job when she was 13 years old at a five-and-dime store in Monroe, Louisiana. She worked all through high school, saving her money so she could take piano lessons and attend Brigham Young University. She met her husband, Bob, in Louisiana where he was serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II. They married and ultimately settled in Provo, where she did attend BYU, earning a bachelors degree in education and a masters degree in special education. She taught special education before retiring. She quietly served others while raising her family. All who knew her remember her as a warm, generous friend who loved her neighbors. She served as a matter of life, of routine, without fanfare. Mary had a special affection for animals, and over the years she shared her life with many pets, including Pepsi, Suzy, Mitzi, Muffin, Misty, and Missy. She was witty and intelligent and loved to sing and play the piano. She loved beautiful things: flowers, art, colors. Mary is survived by her husband, Bob, and three children, Carol Gould, Peggy Webbe and Bruce Howell. She is grandmother to 16 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by all her siblings. The family extends their gratitude to those who have cared so kindly for their wife and mother at Courtyard at Jamestown in Provo where she resided. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, May 26, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Chapel at 3030 Mojave Lane, Provo, Utah. She was a dedicated musician through high school and her 4 years at BYU, and is still playing the flute in musical groups. She received a BA from BYU in history, focusing on U.S. and Mormon history. After receiving an MSW from the U of U, she practiced as a social worker. Later, Peggy attended law school and was awarded a JD and LLM from the Univ. of Connecticut, and has been a practicing attorney ever since. She is an avid traveler, has two wonderful children, Michael and Rebecca, and lives in Tolland, Connecticut with her husband, David, and her pets, books and gardens. @2009

Hannah and Israel had 11 children, 3 of whom died very young. The 1880 US Federal Census includes the following Israel Hoyt, 52, Postmaster, Clarissa A. Hoyt, [1st] Wife, 50, Tailoress. Hannah E. Hoyt, [2nd] Wife, 41, Weaver. Children: Josiah M. Hoyt, Son, 17, Works On Ranch. Hannah E. Hoyt, Daughter, 14, At Home. Lilian B. Hoyt, Daughter, 11. Amanda J. Hoyt, Daughter, 9. Timothy C. Hoyt, Son, 5. Nellie A. Hoyt, Daughter, 2. In addition, Hyrum Hoyt, Brother of Israel Hoyt, 67, On A Visit. The 1910 census taker wrote that Hannah Elizabeth Cook Hoyt had 9 children born to her, with 6 of them still living in 1910. ~ ~ ~ ~ Elder Timothy C. Hoyt was active in church work since his early childhood. He is a native of Utah, having been born at Mount Carmel, Kane County, Utah, on August 1, 1874. His parents were residents of that section. Timothy received his education in the schools of Kane County and the Brigham Young High School and Academy at Provo, Utah. In 1900 Timothy Hoyt went to Texas and for two years served as a missionary in that state. Later, he became prominently affiliated with the United States Forest Service, serving as Forest Ranger in Charge, Dixie Forest Reserve, Parowan. In 1908, at his request, was sent to Ogden when the district forestry headquarters was established there. Shortly afterward, Elder Hoyt became active in church work in the Ogden Stake, serving as an alternate high councilor, which position he held at the time of his advancement to membership in the stake presidency, as Second Councilor to Stake President Thomas B. Evans. [Ogden Standard, May 16, 1916] ~ ~ ~ ~ In 1912, the Ogden Stake High Priests Quorum leaders included: President, David McKay, and Counselors Hyrum Belnap and Timothy C. Hoyt. In the U.S. House of Representatives 1916 elections in Utah's 1st Congressional District, Republican Timothy C. Hoyt received 29,902 votes, but lost to Democrat Milton H. Welling, who received 40,035 votes.

Lew was known for his devotion to his family, his kindness to all who came into his presence, and his unlimited energy and enthusiasm. Lew was born on June 25, 1913 in Preston, Idaho to Watkin L. Roe and Louisa Gwen Mower. He moved to San Francisco during his childhood, but returned to his native Idaho for periods of time and ultimately attended Utah State University. Following his schooling Lew joined Columbia Geneva Steel in San Francisco in 1935 beginning a career with US Steel that spanned 43 years. He was a member of the first class of the Executive Development Program at Stanford's Graduate School of Business, a member of Financial Executives Institute and National Association of Accountants. Following his retirement in 1978, Lew enjoyed time with his family, his love of boating, and his many civic activities He served as a Public Works Commissioner for the City of San Mateo for 8 years. Active in Rotary for many years, he was also a founder and director of the Rotary Haciendas, a provider of low income housing for seniors. Funeral services were held on Friday, December 16 at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, El Camino Real at Baldwin in San Mateo. Interment, Cypress Lawn in Colma. She resided in Ogden, Utah, and died on September 29, 2011. ~ ~ Ogden – Ora Abiah Hudson Chadburn, beloved mother and grandmother, 94, passed away September 29, 2011, at her daughter Debra's home in Uintah, Utah. Born May 20, 1917 in Santaquin, Utah, she was a daughter of Ray and Abiah Robbins Hudson. She was raised by her grandparents, Antrim and Lunia Agnes Robbins, after her mother's death. She graduated from Brigham Young High School in Provo, Utah in the Class of 1936. She attended BYU and worked for Geneva Steel. Ora married Archie F. Chadburn on April 8, 1939 in Farmington, Utah. A year later their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple, on April 3, 1940. They shared a wonderful life of 56 years together. He preceded her in death June 15, 1995. Ora was a member of the LDS Ogden 71st Ward, serving in the Relief Society and Primary. She lived in Provo and Delta, Utah, moving to Ogden in 1953. Her family was her life. She was a loving mother, wife and grandmother. She was a homemaker and enjoyed her husband and five wonderful children. She loved music, numerous hobbies and activities. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Surviving are three sons and two daughters; Gerald (Marjory) of Valencia, California, Gary (Lana) of Minersville, Utah, Debra (Bill) Evenhuis of Uintah, Utah, Corinne (John) Ludema of Layton, Utah, Deane of Millcreek, Utah; 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one sister, Arlene (Don) Peterson of Wickensburg, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her husband; both parents, grandparents, one brother, Albert; three sisters; Lylia, Laura, and Melva; and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held on Monday, October 3, 2011 at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd, Ogden, Utah. He was born August 9, 1919 in Veyo, Utah, a son of Archie Morley Chadburn and Clara Mariah Holt. He married Ora Abiah Hudson, April 8, 1939 in Farmington. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, April 3, 1940. He served in the Army in World War II in the Army Medical Branch from 1941-44. He was a member of the Ogden 71st LDS Ward, served a stake mission in Provo and held various positions as High Priest, Sunday School president and Scouts. He had lived in Ogden since 1953. Employed by Ogden City School District, he retired after 32 years of teaching. Survivors include his wife, of Ogden; five children, Gerald A. (Marjory L.) Valencia, Calif.; Gary F. (Lana) Minersville; Debra O. (William B.) Layton; Corinne (John) Layton; Deane M. (Carol D.) Our beloved sister and friend Jean Hughes Deel died peacefully in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 24, 2000. She was born the eldest of five children to Rex and Betty Hughes in Provo, Utah. Jean graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1952. After completing her education, she pursued her teaching career throughout Utah and Wyoming. She was much loved by her students. Subsequent to her career and marriage, Jean chose to remain in Davis, Oklahoma, where she continued her commitment to assist in helping build a new library for the town. She also worked in the local Wal-Mart where she made many new friends and touched the hearts of everyone she encountered. While being treated at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah, she continued to receive countless loving letters from her many friends and colleagues in the Oklahoma area – a testament to her enduring positive effect on all who knew her. She is survived by her sisters, Suzanne Hughes Elder, Kathryne (Kate) Hughes, her brother and wife, James D. Hughes and Raquel C. Hughes, and adoring nephews and nieces. Nellie Hughes. ~ ~ ~ ~ Her BYH graduation date confirmed in graduating class list, Salt Lake Telegram, May 7, 1935, p. 14 ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Nellie Hughes Barnett returned to her Heavenly Father on March 7, 2007 due to complications from cancer. She was born March 13, 1917 in Mesquite, Nevada to James Elmer Hughes and Mary Emily Abbott Hughes. She married Wilmer Lee Barnett in the St. George Temple April 3, 1936. She graduated from Brigham Young High School and attended BYU and the U of U. She was a life-long member of the LDS Church and held many positions of leadership in the ward and stake. She enjoyed her service as a Relief Society, Primary, and Young Women's President. She was a dedicated teacher, both by word and deed. Nellie was loved and revered by everyone who knew her for her non-judgmental, unconditional love. She lived as she believed and was most happy when serving others. She was a supportive wife and helpmate to her husband in his many callings of leadership in the Church and community. She was a loving and devoted mother and an example of graciousness to all who knew her. She loved her children, grand, great, and great-great grandchildren. She was so proud of them and their accomplishments, especially their church activity and their love for each other and the Savior. She was at peace with her life here on earth and anxiously wanted to move on. Nellie had many close calls with death because of heart trouble, diabetes and cancer. Each trial strengthened her knowledge of the purpose of life here on earth and faith in the eternities to come. She lived to appreciate many wonderful changes throughout her lifetime. She is survived by her two children: Owen Lee Barnett (Jennie) and MaryLynn Barnett McCardell (Robert), seven grandchildren: Dr. Richard Barnett (Tammy), Dr. David Barnett (Debbie), MaryAnn Hatch (Gary), Melissa Woodside (Dan), Jim Barnett (Lisa), Shaun McCardell (Wendy), Jann Boyer (Mark); 25 great- grandchildren; and two great- great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Colleen Hughes Waite (Erwin) Bakersfield, California; Rose Marie Hughes Blake (Lowell) Veyo, Utah; and brother Bill R. Hughes (Naomi) Ogden, Utah. She is preceded in death by her husband, one infant son, Wilmer Dale Hughes, her mother, father, and two brothers, Clair Hughes and Archie E. Hughes. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 10, 2007 in the S.L. Little Cottonwood 1st Ward building, Murray, Utah.
