BY Academy High School Class in 1876. Jonathan Lewis Harvey. One of the original 29 students who registered on the first day of classes at Brigham Young Academy, January 3, 1876. He is also included on a list of 59 names of the earliest students of Brigham Young Academy, taken from a file in the BYU Archives, made by an unknown contemporary student. ~ ~ ~ ~ Jonathan L. Harvey was born on March 8, 1855, in Cedar City, Utah. His parents: Lewis Harvey and Lucinda Clark (a twin) Harvey. He married Mary Helen Alexander on December 30, 1880, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died on March 11, 1945, in Pleasant Grove, Utah, at the age of 90, just after his birthday. Interment, Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Vermont and Melva Harward

Faculty & Staff, Principal of the BYU Lab School. Vermont C. Harward died Friday, March 25, 2004 in his home of an apparent heart attack at the age of 81. He was born in Aurora, Utah Aug 13, 1922, the youngest child of Thomas Franklin Harward and Sarah Jenette Harward. He attended elementary school in Aurora and graduated from North Sevier High School in Salina. He then attended Compton College in California and Brigham Young University. At the advent of World War II he enlisted in the U.S. Army and set sail on the Queen Elizabeth for England and Europe. He survived the Battle of the Bulge and helped to liberate the Jews from the Nazi death camps. Upon his return home he met Melva Pauline Bagley and they were married in the Manti Temple June 27, 1949. Vermont and Melva are the parents of six children, Stan (Rae), Richard (Janice), Randall (Renae), Susan (Marcel) Orton, Calvin (Peggy), and Cheryl (Chris) Wilcox. He completed his studies at BYU and become a teaching-principal at the Aurora Elementary School. He then moved his family to Provo and began teaching in the Alpine School District. He next taught at the BYU Lab School and was principal of the school. He taught many university courses in the BYU Education Department and was involved in many scholarly activities. He was the recipient of many honors including the first Distinguished Service to Education Award from BYU and the Instructional Leader of the Year from the Utah Principals Association. He also served as state president of the International Reading Association. He served as the Director of Reading in the Utah State Office of Education and later worked with curriculum programs in the Provo School District. He ended his career by choice with what he enjoyed most, working with children and teachers as the principal of Grandview and Canyon Crest Elementary schools in Provo. Vermont spent his life as an engaged and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many teaching and leadership positions including bishoprics, several high councils, church writing committees, and as a member of the General Sunday School Board. He was preceded in death by all his 11 brothers and sisters, Vera, Drucilla, Frank, Royal, Rich, Kendrick, Clyde, Elizabeth, Pluma, Opal, and Katie. For his many contributions in life, Vermont will remembered most for his love and complete devotion to his wife, children, 34 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 31, 2004 in Provo. [Published in the Deseret News, March 28, 2004.]

His parents were John [Johannes] Hasler and Anna Louisa [Luisa] Thalmann Hasler. Walter married Ada Elizabeth Broomhead on September 4, 1901 in Manti, Utah. Ada was born on February 12, 1876 in Paris, Bear Lake County, Idaho. Walter was a veteran of World War I. Walter T. Hasler, M. D., died on January 29, 1955 just before his 80th birthday, in Provo, Utah. Dr. Hasler's interment, Provo, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ Walter Hasler, age 21, was manager of the first BYA football team in 1896. She married James Robert Stanley on January 8, 1919 in Salt Lake City, Utah. James R. Stanley was born on October 7, 1896 in Nephi, Utah. His parents were Ruben Stanley and Jessie Jenkins Jarrett Stanley. James died on November 5, 1971. His interment, Vine Bluff Cemetery, near Nephi, Utah. Elena Hassell Stanley died on December 9, 1987 in Mona, Utah. Her interment, Vine Bluff Cemetery, Utah.

Our much-loved Mary Gay Hatch, 83, of Orem, Utah, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 29, 2018, surrounded by her closest friends Elaine Michaelis and Lu Wallace and other loved ones. Mary Gay was born on April 6, 1934 in Springville, Utah, to William Arthur Hatch and Mary Ellen Ott. She was the youngest of six children. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Lula Campbell and ArLene Jones Christenson; and by her brothers Ferrell, Darrell, and Lyle Hatch. Mary has 23 nieces and nephews that enjoyed many adventures with her throughout the years. One of Mary’s goals was education. She received significant education including being a certified professional teacher by the Utah Education Association. She also received a bachelor of science degree from BYU and a master’s degree in art education from Arizona State University. Mary was instrumental in protecting the BY Academy Education Building from destruction (which became the beautiful Provo Library) until financial backing was obtained. She was very proud of that beautiful building. Always ready to serve, Mary enjoyed her years as an LDS Temple worker in the Timpanogos Temple. In her ward, Mary was appreciated as she fulfilled many positions, both in teaching and in leadership. She also worked for years with children with special needs. Everyone loved Mary, especially the children. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 5, 2018 at The Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary located at 495 South State Street, Orem, Utah. Viewings for friends and family will be held Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the mortuary, and on Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. just prior to the funeral service. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Springville, Utah. We appreciate the outpouring of love, support, and service that has been given to our family at this critical time. Ray Clark Hatch. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Ray Clark Hatch, 93, long time scouter, beloved family patriarch, passed away peacefully at home in North Salt Lake, March 11, 1999, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in his grandfather's house, the first one built outside of the fort in Woodruff, Arizona, the son of Lorenzo Wilford Hatch and Adelia Owens Hatch. The family moved to Franklin, Idaho, near the Utah border and near Logan, Utah. Ray "received his formal education at Brigham Young Academy." [Note: Brigham Young Academy ceased to exist in 1903, so while this might refer to either Brigham Young High School or Brigham Young University, we are unable to find any record of his enrollment at BYH or BYU between 1919 and 1930. Considering his family's residence in Franklin, Idaho, Ray may have attended Brigham Young College in Logan, Utah. Background sources: BYU/BYH Annual Catalogues for the School Years 1918-1930.] Ray Clark Hatch graduated from The National University in Washington D.C. with three law degrees. He lived in San Francisco where he was an attorney for H.O.L.C. [Home Owners' Loan Corporation was a New Deal agency established in 1933 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt] and Educational Director for the Boy Scouts of America. He served as a Scout Executive on the Great Salt Lake Council B.S.A. He was first elected Mayor of North Salt Lake and served two terms as President of the North Salt Lake Town Board. He served as counselor and supervisor for Continuing Education. He developed Heraldry materials and presentations for BYU Education Week. Active member of the LDS Church, he served on the San Francisco High Council and spent years of service in positions in Orchard Ward, North Salt Lake. He spent much time researching and doing genealogical writings and works. He married his beloved Eastern Shore Maiden, Nellie Hayward, in Baltimore, Maryland. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple. She died September 25, 1977. They had four daughters who were raised in San Francisco, Adelia (William) Newland, Green River, Utah; Betty (Dale) Washburn, Bountiful; Mary (Ronald) Watkins; Joan (Richard) Freed. He is survived by 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, three great great-grandchildren; Thora (Roy) Geddes is his surviving sister of Franklin, Idaho; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his wife; parents; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Joseph and Alton. The family wishes to thank the many friends and church members for their kindness; also to Applegate Health Services and Hospice for Utah for their help and care. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 16, 1999 in North Salt Lake. Interment, Franklin County Cemetery, Franklin, Idaho. [Deseret News, Saturday, March 13, 1999]
