Verna and Jake Blocker

Class of 1943. Verna Hansen. Thespians 2-3, Thespian Vice President 3, Notre Maison 1-2-3, Fauvines 2-3, Opera 1, Contest play 2, School play 2-3, Banter newspaper 1-2, Wildcat yearbook 1-2-3. Verna Hansen married Jacob David (Jake) Blocker. They lived in Savannah, Georgia for many years. They have five children, and many grandchildren. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Verna Rae Hansen Blocker. Our Grandma Snicklefritz, Verna Rae Hansen Blocker, passed away peacefully October 28, 2020 in Orem, Utah at the age of 96. Born in Provo, Utah on September 25, 1924, to Franklin Earl and Elva Hansen, she was the oldest of ten children. She attended Brigham Young High School at a time when all the boys were gone to war, graduating in the Class of 1943. She married Jacob David Blocker in July of 1949 and headed down to the deep south of Savannah, Georgia where she raised four sons and a daughter. While living in Savannah she worked at Anderson’s Grocery Store and Jim’s convenience store where she loved to take the grandkids to fulfill her oath as a Grandma to fill them with treats. She was well known and loved in the communities served by these stores. After Jake’s death in 1996, Verna headed back to Utah where she would become known to hundreds of children as Grandma Blocker. She volunteered 16 years in the Foster Grandparent program at Scera Park Elementary helping kids learn to read and most importantly, making them feel special. She was honored at the age of 93 for her years of service and decided it was time to retire. Caring for others was Grandma’s calling in life; whether it was caring for her ailing family members, tending grandkids, making hand-drawn cards for all the kids every Christmas and birthday or the ever-reliable pat on the cheek letting you know she loved ya. Grandma loved people, even the occasional “Old Heifer”. She loved telling her stories and learning someone else’s. She could always find a cousin and she would forever introduce them as such. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and worked as an ordinance worker for 11 years in the Mount Timpanogos Temple. She was adored and will be remembered by so many for the laughs she gave, the stories she told and always for the way she made them feel. But Grandma, the time came for you to close your little peepers and head on home and when they asked how it went, you probably answered with the only fitting answer, “It was just the ticket and gooder n’ snuff!” Verna is survived by her children: Jacob David Blocker, Jr. (Debbie), Steven Kim (Brenda), Anne Hagewood (Gary), Gary Franklin (Carol), Teddy Leon (Kathy), 23 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, David Hansen, and a sister, Gail Vernon. A viewing for Verna was held on Friday, November 6, 2020, at the LDS Chapel at 1075 West 1100 North, Orem. Followed by a funeral service that was live-streamed at on ZOOM (To view this funeral service paste the following link in your web browser and click 'ENTER' https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87837838223?pwd=RVFiaVFEK215dkxXWHR2THhqU090QT09 She was buried alongside her parents in the American Fork City Cemetery following the service. The family expresses their deep gratitude to the staff and management of Summerfield Retirement and the Envision Hospice staff, especially hospice nurse, Nate Mansanarez, for their kind care of Verna. Faculty & Staff, B. Y. Elementary School. Mrs. ______ Hansen. Taught Fourth Grade in the late 1920s and early 1930s. ~ ~ ~ ~ "My name is Carlyle Lambert. My family arrived in Provo 1926 when my father uprooted us from Rexburg, St. Anthony, Idaho area and came down to BYU to finish his college and get a master's degree. That was mostly all completed when he brought us down here in 1926/27. Our whole family went to BYU Training School, which no longer exists. It's been torn down. I have a lot of memories of that school. A lot of people went there. After I finished the sixth grade at the BYU Elementary School, then I went to Farrer Junior High School. . . . I did have some excellent teachers coming up through BYU. I had three teachers that decided I was going to learn or I was going to have to have some very serious conversations with my father, who at that time was the principal of BYU High School. Fortunately my fourth grade teacher Mrs. _____ Hansen wouldn't put up with any nonsense. If you had to stay there until 9 at night to finish an assignment, she stayed right there with you. You had to get it done, or you wouldn't go home. She would stay there all night I guess." --Carlyle Lambert, interviewed in 1999.

Virginia Hanson

Virginia Hanson. Not a graduate of BYH circa 1937, she actually graduated from Brigham Young College in Logan. ~ ~ Graduates of Utah State University in May 1941: Virginia Hanson of Cornish, "a graduate of B. Y. High School", and Joseph P. Malberg [Malmberg?] of Clarkston, "a graduate of B. Y. High School" (likely incorrect, he was probably a graduate of B. Y. College in Logan, too). Source: North Cache News, 1941-05-09, Commencement Date Set May 31 (1941) ~ ~ ~ ~ BIOGRAPHY: Virginia Hanson (1907-78). Virginia Hanson was an important local figure in Cache Valley but most especially the small town of Cornish, Utah. As head librarian at the Cache County public library for thirty years Miss Hanson instilled a love of reading into generations of young people. But Virginia Hanson was more than simply a librarian. Her influence was felt through her varied activities, which included organizing games and writing and presenting plays for the Cornish LDS ward. Nellie Virginia Hanson was born in Logan, Utah on February 19, 1907. Virginia, as she was known, was the daughter of William O. and Hilma Anderson Hanson. One of six children, Virginia had three sisters Mae, Inez, and Helvie and two brothers Carl and Byron. Mae, who became a school teacher was Virginia's constant companion. Those who remember Virginia remember that Mae was always at her side. The Hanson family settled in Cornish, Utah in 1914. The farm the Hansons settled on became known locally as "Dreary Acres." Virginia attended elementary school in Cornish then went to the Brigham Young College in Logan. Later, she graduated from Utah State University. Early in her career Virginia Hanson was a teacher. She taught elementary school at Cornish and Lewiston in Cache County and at Hiawatha in Carbon County and at Heber City in Wasatch County. But Miss Hanson is best remembered as a librarian. She began work as an assistant librarian at the Cache County public library in 1941. She quickly rose to the position of head librarian which she held for thirty years, from 1944 until her retirement in 1974. A voracious reader and lover of books, Virginia Hanson encouraged reading at every opportunity. She read to the residents of Sunshine Terrace and was active in promoting the enjoyment of books through the Lewiston Literary League. Community and church affairs were the stuff of Hanson's life. She served as the co-chairman of the Cache Bicentennial Committee, a member of the board of directors of the Sunshine Terrace Foundation, a charter member of the Lewiston Literary League, and a sponsor of the Foreign Students Association at Utah State University. She was a member of the Utah Library Association. She was score keeper for the Cornish baseball team. In addition, Virginia and Mae Hanson were travelers. They visited every state in the Union and traveled in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and South America. The sisters had returned from a BYU tour of Central America only weeks before the fatal train-car accident. Virginia, and her sister Mae (1909-1978) were killed on January 25, 1978 when a Union Pacific train struck their car at a railroad crossing at "Dreary Acres" in Cornish, Utah. Both sisters, constant companions in life, were buried in the Logan City cemetery. Source: http://archiveswest.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv27334

Dale was my 4th Grade teacher at BY Elementary Lab School in about 1960. I don't know how long he was at the school but he taught the class of Patti Porter Hintze in 1961. Rich Reimschussel, Orem, Utah" ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: On Wednesday morning June 1, 2016, Dale J. Harding, age 86, passed peacefully into the arms of our Father in Heaven. He was an amazing man who adored his wife, Silvia Harding, and loved his 10 children and 81 grandchildren with all of his heart. Dale had a passion for helping others, and was a born educator. He earned a PhD in education and spent his life serving children in countries all over the world, including Chile, Bolivia and Saudi Arabia. As a school principal, he knew each and every child in his care by name. He would walk down the school halls flocked by children hugging him and calling his name. He loved traveling, fishing, nurturing his beautiful yard and gardens, watching BYU football, and spoiling his dogs. Music was a big part of his life. He sang in quartets, Ward Choirs, and was always humming and singing in his home. Dale had a deep love for his Savior, and was consistently trying to be the best man he could be. [As of October 2, 1994] ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Lloynel Maurice Harding was born September 12, 1921 and died at his home on June 28, 2008. Lloynel led a life worthy of "The Greatest Generation" of which he is part. Born in Provo, Utah, Lloynel was the oldest child of Marva Booth and Maurice Harding. He was left motherless at 1 1/2 years old when Marva died, along with his infant sister, following complications with child birth. When not at his father's home he spent much of his youth with his grandparents on their farm in west Provo. He had many fond memories of them and playing on the stream that ran through their property, which later became the GRA park. Although his mother had passed away, he had much love from his aunts and uncles as he was growing up. Lloynel is survived by his wife Carol; daughter Suzanne Harding McMullen; son Richard and wife Lyle Harding, and sons Phillip Pecoraro (wife Tiffany, daughters Sophie and Berkly,) and Patrick Pecoraro; son Paul Harding and his partner Brett Vuksinick; grandson Cody C. McMullen; grandson Brock C. and wife Jennifer McMullen and great grandson Titan Brock McMullen; brother Neil Harding and his wife Beverly; sister Marjorie and husband Charles Donnelly; sister Liane Harding; sisters-in-law Madge (Robert Harding) and Orva (Bruce Harding); aunt Grace Smith; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Lloynel graduated from Brigham Young High where he was a gifted athlete playing most sports but excelling at basketball and track. He graduated from BYU in 1948 with a degree in political science. Lloynel enlisted and served his country during WWII from 1941 to 1945. He served with the 779th EPD Company in China, Burma, and India and drove the Burma Road. He met and made many lifetime friends and frequently attended army reunions. Sadly, one of the last survivors of his company, with Lloynel's death we lose yet another witness of that historic time. Lloynel met Carol Cummings after returning from his military service. They were married in Salt Lake City, Utah on June 26, 1947. Lloynel and Carol established their home in Orem. His career was steelmaking at the Geneva Steel Mill. Lloynel retired as a general foreman in 1983 after working 33 years on the blast furnaces. Lloynel had an enthusiasm for life and shared it with the people he loved. He was first and foremost about his family and the family vacation was Lloynel at his best. Vacations could be anything from a road trip to Yosemite with his wife and three children in a Pontiac station wagon in 1960 to more elaborate adventures which involved hauling a 5th wheel trailer and a 17-foot Bellboy boat to Lake Powell. Carol, his three children and his two grandsons all have memories of their favorite trips with him. Lloynel also enjoyed deer hunting the South Fork of Provo Canyon, fishing Strawberry and Flaming Gorge, bowling, rock collecting, gardening and sneaking table scraps to the family dogs. Carol and Lloynel loved playing cards. They could spend the day playing cribbage or stay up late into the night playing pinochle with anyone brave enough to offer a challenge. Those that met Lloynel later in life never knew the strong and vigorous man he was most of his life, instead they knew a gentle, kind and quiet man. Those listening closely enjoyed Lloynel's great sense of humor which he didn't reveal unless he knew you well. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at the Provo City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations to a charity of your choice.
