Class of 1909 411

Brigham Young High School, Class of 1909

Research performed by Scott Cowley has identified 32 Brigham Young High School graduates. Only one has been found receiving a Commercial Diploma, where normally 10-20 Commercial graduates would be found, so at least this portion of the class may still be missing.

A famous 1909 photo shows 20 BYH Commercial students wearing identical outfits, with a large "C" on each jersey. A review of the roster shows that 14 of those pictured graduated with a Commercial Diploma in 1911. One graduated in 1910, and one graduated in 1910 and in 1911. That leaves five unknown. They have been listed with the Class of 1909 with a question mark. They include: Florence Bee, Eva Page (Wanlass), Deloss Paxman, Leon Neuren, and Cyril Duffin.

One additional BYH student, Reuben W. Radmall, has also been listed with a question mark, until further research can be done to discover his actual BYH class year.

Brigham Young High School Class of 1910

Total combined total of 1910 Brigham Young High School graduates found to date in the 1910 yearbook and in records researched by Scott Cowley in the BYU Records Office: 105. [July 2008]

Quote taken from 1910 BYU Banyan, p. 78: "The Fourth Year High School Class -- The High School class of 1910 includes students not only of the High School, but also of the Normal, the Commercial, the Arts and Trades, the Agricultural and the Music Departments. The entrance registration in 1906 showed an enrollment of 470 students. As is usually the case the number has decreased somewhat the second year and many new faces were seen placed in place of the old ones. The third year proved a successful year for the H.S. 10's. Two year's training brought results. One of the Kirkham medals for debating and both oratorical medals were won by members of the class. Besides winning the inter-class championship in basket-ball, the class furnished six men on the University baseball nine, and four men on the track team. The present year has been a banner year for them. There are about 140 members in the class. This year Percy Craven was elected president with Oliver T. Steed as first vice-president and Annie [Aimie] Taylor as second vice-president. The class has furnished one of our inter-collegiate debators. It was again successful in winning the inter-class championship in basket-ball. It has a dramatic club and an abundance of literary talent." Note: Extensive photos of the members of this class are included, but the names are found on a different page. At the bottom of the page is this warning: "There are others who did not get their pictures in."

Class of 1911 411

Brigham Young High School Class of 1911.

This class is the first Brigham Young High School class known to have published its own yearbook. Individual photos of each person are beautifully done, and silly or insightful comments were included for each graduate. Research by Scott Cowley in the official records in the BYU Records Office has supplemented the yearbook listings. The current combined total of this BYH class stands at 112, with one honorary member [Vasco M. Tanner]. [July 2008]

At the same time the high school yearbook was published, the BYU Banyan was published, which also included the Brigham Young High School classes.

Class of 1912 411

Brigham Young High School Class of 1912

This class is fairly well documented in the 1912 BYH yearbook, called the Mizpah. The Department of each student is not given. Mizpah literally means "tower in the wilderness" but also carries a much deeper meaning. Pages 1 through 62 contain information about the BYH Class of 1912. Page 105 reprints a news story about the Class of 1912 donating $1,000 to build a new gate at the southwest corner of the Academy block. Only about 135 class members are listed in the Mizpah. Class of 1912 high school graduates have been confirmed, and some new ones documented, through the research of Scott Cowley in the early record books in the BYU Records Office. The combined list for this BYH class currently stands at 170, with question marks by two additional records: Genevieve Richardson and Wilford Smith. The Class of 1912 appears to be the largest graduating class in Brigham Young High School history. [July 2010]

Class of 1913 411

Brigham Young High School Class of 1913

This class is well documented in the 1913 "BYUtah" yearbook. The yearbook gives the Department of each student, but not their hometown. A new feature: In addition to Seniors, this yearbook gives names and some photos of the BYH Junior '14, Sophomore '15, and Freshman '16 classes. The yearbook information has been supplemented by research done by Scott Cowley, who in 2007 and 2008 painstakingly went through the handwritten annual records of BYH in the BYU Records Office. This information has now been added here. The current class roster totals 124 BYH graduates, plus one honorary class member: Alice Eliza Strong.

The following is a paraphrase from the H.S. 13's History in the yearbook:

At the annual spring class meet of 1911, we captured the coveted 'First Place' with a record of 32 points. The next year we took all track meets, and the baseball and basketball events. That was when we were three-year-olds. The following summer, July of 1912, came the glad news from Stockholm that Alma W. Richards, our '13-Star' athlete, had won the World's Championship [Olympics] high jump. As there was nothing higher than the World's Championships for our athletes to win, our class turned to the intellectual. Here, too, our success was phenomenal. The class gift from the H.S. '13s was the Beehive Fountain, designed by Andrew N. Brimhall. The following list is one of the most complete BYH class rosters.

Brigham Young High School Class of 1914.

The photographs and names contained in the 1914 BYU Banyan yearbook, BYH Section, are significantly incomplete. Only about 70 names appear, while BYH senior classes of that era ranged from 100 to 150 students. In 2007-2008, Scott Cowley researched this class in the BYU Records Office. These records have now been compared and entered, and the current roster for the Class of 1914 stands at 143, plus one honorary member: Laura Swallow. [June 2008]

Class of 1915 411

Brigham Young High School Class of 1915.

Beginning with two sources, a 1915 graduation program and the 1915 BYH Banyan yearbook, BYH section, about 65 names were found. In 2007-2008, Scott Cowley researched official records in the BYU Records Office, and as a result, the combined current BYH class total stands at 122. [July 2008]

Class of 1916 411

Brigham Young High School Class of 1916.

Research conducted in a variety of sources has produced a combined list of 125 members of the BYH Class of 1916. This includes research in the official record books in the BYU Records Office, performed by Scott Cowley. We have placed question marks by the name of three of the 125: John Elgie Payne, Frank E. Peterson, and Clifton August Talboe. At least some of these may be honorary members of the Class. [July 2008]

Research conducted in a variety of sources has produced a combined list of 134 members of the BYH Class of 1917. This includes research in the official record books in the BYU Records Office, performed by Scott Cowley. The following list is one of the most complete BYH class rosters. [September 2008]

Class of 1918 411

Brigham Young High School Class of 1918.

Names of high school graduates have been found in several sources, including a partial list in the 1918 Graduation Program, yearbook entries in the 1918 BYU Banyan, and individual entries in the annual records of BYU found in the BYU Records Office, with research done by Scott Cowley. It appears the Class of 1918 list is substantially complete, with 140 profiles. [September 2008]

Class of 1919 411

Brigham Young High School Class of 1919:

Names of high school graduates have been found in several sources, including a partial list in the 1919 BYH Graduation Program, yearbook entries in the 1918 BYU Banyan, and individual entries in the annual records of BYU found in the BYU Records Office, with research done by Scott Cowley. It appears the Class of 1919 list is substantially complete, with 90 profiles. We have added one more record with a question mark, and we are still trying to confirm whether Carl Davis Swenson [or Swensen] attended Brigham Young High School. [September 2008]

Excerpt from the 1919 Banyan, BYH Section, Fourth Year's Class History: This year has been to our class a joyous and a happy one, in spite of the handicap of existing conditions. At the start we had our officers all elected, our plans made, our air castles built -- then came the "Flu." Well, we lost our president and missed many officers. So we started our school late, without an executive, and quite without unity. In athletics, the cross country run was postponed, there was no fall track work, the basketball season was extremely short, and there was no baseball. But, on the spring track work we furnished many of the men on the H.S. track team. In social lines we certainly exceeded our original outlook. Our first party was a humming success, and our Saratoga trip was one of the biggest times of the year. Our resume is brief but bright -- we came up smiling! ~ ~ ~ ~ At 65+ classmates, this list appears to be fairly complete.

Class of 1920 411

Brigham Young High School Class of 1920

Names of 1920 high school graduates have been gathered from several sources, including yearbook entries in the 1920 BYU Banyan, and individual entries in the annual records of BYU found in the BYU Records Office, with research done by Scott Cowley. It appears the Class of 1920 list currently contains 145 profiles, but 11 of them have question marks because they have not been confirmed, hence 134 classmates. Those with question marks include: Betsy Banks, Louisa Banks, Martha Ellertson, Vida Leone Fugal, Viola Harrison, Leona Marie Jacobson, Elvin William Lewis, Reed Lowry Molen, Sr., Nell Roper, Stella Vernon and Zella Walch. The sources of most of these profiles are their obituaries. [September 2008]

Class of 1921 411

Brigham Young High School Class of 1921.

We are fortunate to have found background information about part of this class. Names of 1921 high school graduates have been gathered from several additional sources, including yearbook entries in the 1921 BYU Banyan, a Class of 1921 photograph, and individual entries in the annual records of BYU found in the BYU Records Office, with research done by Scott Cowley. It appears the Class of 1921 list currently contains 128 profiles, but one of them has a question mark because it has not yet been confirmed, hence 127 classmates. The one with a with question mark is: Edith Mae Ward. The source of her profile is her obituary. [October 2008]

411, Class of 1922

Class of 1922 411

Brigham Young High School Class of 1922.

Names of 1922 high school graduates have been gathered from several sources, including yearbook entries in the 1922 BYU Banyan, and individual entries in the annual records of BYU found in the BYU Records Office, with research done by Scott Cowley. It was in 1922, however, that BYU annual records began to focus on university graduates, and apparently most Brigham Young High School records were kept elsewhere. This list is obviously incomplete. As of October 2008, our BYH Class of 1922 list currently contains only 64 names, but 7 of them have question marks, 57 classmates. The ones with question marks include: Violet Bernice Gardner, Belva May Gurney, Elma Hartley, Minnie Hendricks, Rachel Holbrook, Paul Fortesque Keeler, and Reid Lowry Molen, Sr. Additional researched needed. Brigham Young High School Class of 1923:

1923 Poem of Brigham Young High School
We loiter on the campus and roam around the halls--
Have radiator parties and scribble on the walls.
We keep outrageous hours, but stay within the line,
We have to squeeze to do it, but otherwise we're fine!
It's good that we are limited to fifty in a class,
For what this school would do with more, we do not know, alas;

We hate the college atmosphere which holds us so in check,
And seems to interfere to make our best of plans a wreck.
But we're getting college fever, and soon will grow to be
As proper eds and co-eds as one could wish to see!

Note: At "50 to a class" the 1923 roster in the BYU Banyan was short by about half. However, with additional research by Scott Cowley in the BYU Records Office, we have been able to round out the class with 57 profiles.

Class of 1924 411

Brigham Young High School Class of 1924.

Some say the Class of 1924 is BYH's most distinguished class, when all is considered, simply because Philo T. Farnsworth was a member of this class. Everyone else just added luster!

Early research on this class was frustrating because, as you can see, the 1924 BYU/BYH Banyan yearbook identified 34 of the members of the BYH Class of 1924 in a composite photo, but listing only by their last names. To date, we have not found a 1924 graduation program, but by searching various documents and sources, we find that a majority of the 85 to 90 members of the Class of 1924 were not pictured in the yearbook, and some of those pictured did not graduate in the Class of 1924. Please send any additional biographical information you may have to See also the 26 Honorary members of the Class of 1924. Please send your information today.

Class of 1925 411

Brigham Young High School Class of 1925.

We had gathered a rather incomplete list of Class of 1925 high school graduates from several sources, including yearbook entries in the 1925 BYU Banyan, and a handful of individual entries in the annual records in the BYU Records Office, with research done by Scott Cowley. Then in November of 2008 Joan Crowther Hamilton, BYH Class of 1957, sent us a copy of the Closing Exercises Program of the BYH academic portion of the Class of 1925, with 26 names! This class list includes the name of her father, Ray Eldon Crowther, who graduated that year. As a result, our BYH Class of 1925 list currently contains 54 names. One included with a question mark and explanation is Elton Andrew Hartley. This list is now significantly more complete. [November 18, 2008]

Class of 1927 411

BYH Class of 1927:
Our chief source for the current list is the High School section of the BYU Banyan yearbook, 1927. However, it is obvious that the photos and names in this section include a mix of students in several BYH classes, ranging from 1925 to 1930. There is almost no evidence yet of any of them actually receiving their diplomas on graduation day, May 26, 1927 [date is derived from an article in the Richfield Reaper, May 26, 1927]. We continue to search for a list of graduating seniors in the Evening Herald of Provo, or some other newspaper or graduation program of 1927. If you can help, please email yhigh@ymail.com

Class of 1928 411

BYH Class of 1928:

Our chief source for the graduation list is an article in the Evening Herald, Provo, Utah, published on Wednesday, May 23, 1928. Fifty members of the class are mentioned in the newspaper. While the article claims that this is the largest graduating class in the history of BYU High School, there are many earlier classes that had larger graduation lists. This appears to be a fairly complete list.

BYH Class of 1930:

Our chief source for the graduation list is an article in the Evening Herald, Provo, Utah, published on Wednesday, May 28, 1930. Thirty-six members of the class are mentioned in the newspaper. This appears to be a fairly complete list.

411, Class of 1931

411, Class of 1931

Class of 1931 411

Class of 1931.

Our chief source for the 1931 graduation list is an article in the Evening Herald, Provo, Utah, published on Tuesday, May 27, 1931. Twenty-eight members of the class are mentioned in the newspaper. This is likely an incomplete list. The Tuesday article says, "The following are a list of graduates who have so far been passed on, several more are now being considered..." and graduation was on Thursday. The most common graduating number for classes during this era was 35, so there may be 7-10 additional names that should be listed.

411, Class of 1932

411, Class of 1932

Class of 1932 411

Class of 1932.

Our chief source for the 1932 graduation list is an article in the Evening Herald, Provo, Utah, published on Wednesday, June 1, 1932. The sub-headline says, "36 Students to Get Diplomas At Exercises", but only 35 names are listed. Nevertheless, this appears to be a fairly complete list. The 36th diploma may have been that issued to J. J. Keeler, who was a member of the Class of 1931 who did not receive his diploma until 1932, according to Keeler family lore. Another candidate for the missing classmate 36 is Argene Vance.
