Class of 1883. Stephen L. Chipman. Board of Trustees 1897 to 1938. Born March 18, 1864, American Fork, Utah. His early schooling was obtained in American Fork, and he graduated from BYA in Bookkeeping and Business in 1883, going only in the winter months. He was a distinguished businessman, operating the Chipman Mercantile Company for 34 years, the largest department store south of Salt Lake City. He was a church leader, and political leader. He was a member of the BYU Board of Trustees for more than 40 years, from 1896 to 1939. First married Sina Neilsen at Logan, Utah, December 13, 1885. They had seven children. After Sina's death, married Annie Maddick Jamison of Manchester England and SLC, Utah, married February 15, 1940. Stephen died on March 31, 1945 in SLC hospital, funeral in Alpine State Tabernacle. He died on April 11, 1976, in Salt Lake City, at the age of 43, and he was buried on April 14, 1976 in Bountiful, Utah.
