	We have read the American Heritage School's detailed explanation, and their amazing timeline of history that they have invented for their school. In the past they have claimed to be the literal successor of Brigham Young Academy and Brigham Young High School. Several years ago, the alumni of Brigham Young High School learned of some of these institutional genealogical claims, and we wrote a warm and positive feature story about it on our website [www.byhigh.org] with links to the AHS website. No story in the history of our website has received so much response. In three months we had an overwhelming response against their version of history. In the light of this response, we removed all mentions of AHS school from our website, with this exception, and we have promised not to mention the school and its claims again. We wish them well and are supportive of AHS, its ideals, moral standards, and its achievements. However, the issue of whether the alumni of BYH recognize AHS as an historical descendant of BYH (we cannot survey our Brigham Young Academy high school alumni because they are all deceased) has long been settled, at least as far as the official BYH alumni website is concerned.

	The BYA ~ BYH Directory will attempt to include names of individuals who received high school diplomas from Brigham Young Academy Beaver Branch ~ Murdock Academy, at least between 1908 and 1922. Some of these graduates stated in their biographies that they "graduated from high school at Brigham Young Academy". Graduating class sizes ranged from between 8 [in 1910] and 30 [in the 1920s]. The total number of high school graduates could range between 150 and 375. Centenarian graduates could live until 2009. In this section of the Directory, they will be listed in alphabetical order. 	411, BYA Collegiate Students	BYA Collegiates 411
	In this Alumni Directory, our focus is on the often-forgotten BY Academy secondary senior classes between 1877 and 1903, and on the BY High School senior classes from 1904 to 1968. In 1881 Brigham Young Academy's Scientific Department broke new ground by awarding a "collegiate diploma" to James E. Talmage, the first such BYA diploma to be issued. This raised serious questions about whether a secondary school could issue a "collegiate diploma" that would be recognized by colleges. James Talmage and others were required to take extra tests at other colleges before their collegiate credential was accepted. BYU and the BYU Alumni Association keep records of BYA collegiate-level graduates, but have not in the past kept comprehensive lists of BYA high-school-level graduates. That is why our emphasis in this Directory is on high school graduates. Nevertheless, in this Directory we will also track the relatively small number of BYA students who received BYA collegiate degrees between 1881 to 1903, simply to avoid confusing the two groups, and because there is much overlapping. Out of 105 classes tracked by this website Directory, we have not yet found relatively complete class listings for only the following classes: 1880, 1890, 1891 Commercials, 1892, 1898, 1899, and 1900. 	First Brigham Young Academy Enrollees: Unlike the other class lists in this Directory up through 1968, the Brigham Young Academy "Class in 1876" is not a graduating class list. Instead, it is an historic list of the first class, in fact, the first 29 enrollees, that began their BYA studies in January 1876 in the Lewis Building, Provo, Utah. Those who graduated in later classes will be so noted within their alumni profiles, and their profile will appear with their graduating class in this Directory.

	BY Academy Class of 1881. According to Principal Karl G. Maeser's report published in The Territorial Enquirer newspaper, Provo, Utah on June 22, 1881, the BYA Class of 1881 included eighteen students: High School, Commercial: 6. These six included: Thomas Adams, Oscar Berglund, George Gardner, Elias Kimball & J. Golden Kimball, and Angus Vance. High School, Normal (Teachers): 11. These eleven included: Simon Eggertsen, Hannah Friel, Daniel Harrington, Mary John, Ida Keate, Laura Larsen, Rose Lee, Joseph Noble, Hannah Rees, Sadie Shepherd, and Elmira Wilson. In 1881 the Academy recognized its first ever Collegiate graduate, James E. Talmage. To indicate the diversity of students at BYA, the following quote is taken from Principal Maeser's report regarding its Normal (teaching) Department: "In the Normal dept., 35 students have been registered during the present year, of whom 3 have already been acting teachers and taken only a finishing course of one term*; 3 have given up the profession; 1 had left at the end of the third term to return next year; 11 were graduated that day, leaving 4 still in attendance." [The four still in attendance were: Isaiah M. Coombs, Flora Harvey, Nels Nelson, and Ettie Swarthout.] ________ *It is entirely likely that these three acting teachers who took a "finishing course" for one term, thereafter considered themselves to be BYA alumni, though their names are not listed in the Principal's Report.

	Brigham Young Academy, High School Class of 1889. According to the report of Commencement Exercises in the Provo Daily Enquirer of May 28, 1889, twenty-three members of the Class of 1889 graduated with one or more certificates. According to Principal Karl G. Maeser, these were "the commencement exercises of the thirteenth academic year of the B. Y. Academy". After commencement exercises were completed, an afternoon concert was held, followed by an evening ball in the assembly room of the Academy. No collegiate graduates were mentioned.

	Class of 1891. As of May 2008, twenty-one BYA Normal high school graduates have been added to the following Class of 1891, based on copy of their graduation program. 	Class of 1892. The names currently listed in the Class of 1892 come from a variety of sources, including the Juniors listed on the graduation program of the Class of 1891. We have not yet been able to find the members of Class of 1892 listed in the official records of Brigham Young Academy, in newspapers, or in any graduation program. Therefore the 42 names we have listed are approximate not firm. If you have access to a list of this Class, please send it to us to share with others.

	Class of 1893. The ten members of the Class of 1893 listed below were found in Book 1, Students Record of Class Standings, B.Y. Academy, in the BYU Records Office. We are grateful to Scott Cowley for researching these names. In addition, he found four graduates who received B.Pd. degrees, listed in the collegiate Class of 1893.

	BY Academy Class of 1894. Note: According to 1894 news reports, Brigham Young Academy in 1893-1894 had 851 students, and seven collegiate graduates. We currently have the names of three BYA high school graduates, one honorary BYA high school graduate, and seven collegiate BYA collegiate (listed separately). It may be possible that more than three BYA high school students graduated, since nothing was mentioned about them in the news reports. In 2007, when Scott Cowley researched Book 1 of the Students Record of Class Standings, B.Y. Academy, he found only three collegiate graduates, and only three high school graduates, which indicates that the records researched were somewhat incomplete.

	BY Academy Class of 1895. According to the Deseret News of June 1, 1895, there were 16 Collegiate Normal graduates receiving B. Pd. Degrees. It added that there were 5 (sic) graduates from the Commercial high school program, and "There are no graduates from the Academic Department this year." According to the (Provo) Daily Enquirer of May 22, 1895, there were 16 Collegiate Normal and 7 Commercial high school graduates this year. We have all seven names. According to the Salt Lake Daily Tribune of May 23, 1895, there were 16 collegiate graduates, but it gives only 7 of the names. It says there were 7 graduates in the commercial high school department, and all seven names are listed. The Commercial graduates held their graduation earlier in the day, and the Normal graduates held their graduation exercises later in the day.

	Class of 1896. The BY Academy Class of 1896 included seven High School graduates. These seven were commercial students [Babbitt, Hakes, Jordan, Kleinman, Lesueur, Nielson, and Shepherd]. It also included eight collegiate graduates [Booth, Brimhall, Christensen, Findlay, Hedquist, Maeser, Mendenhall, and Rasmussen]. Shepherd was listed as a BYA "Commercial College" graduate, but he is listed on the Commencement program with the High School Commercial Class of 1896. The Deseret News of 1896 mentions another BYA Commercial College graduate, Edgar T. Reid. We need to confirm whether this is correct by additional research. [Walter Hasler qualified for collegiate graduation (B. Pd.) in 1896, but actually graduated with the Class of 1897.] Source 1: Students Record of Class Standings B. Y. To date, we have found only one of the 1896 Normal graduates, Anna Louise Hedquist.

	BY Academy Class of 1897. BYA records researched to date [July 2007] yield names of 19 collegiate graduates. [18 B. Pd. degrees -- Bachelor of Pedagogy -- plus 1 diploma in the Commercial College Department]. In addition, The (Provo) Daily Enquirer newspaper reported that BYA awarded 12 Bachelor of Didactics (B. D.) collegiate degrees in May of 1897 -- many of the B. D. degrees were awarded to alumni who had received B. Pd. degrees in previous years. Two additional B. Pd. degrees were mentioned in the Daily Enquirer that do not appear in other sources: Louise Hedquist and Moses C. Davis. This brings the number of collegiate degrees awarded in 1897 to 33. We do not yet have any list of the BYA high school graduates in 1897. We are missing high school Commercial and Normal seniors, and perhaps other high school categories as well. [May 2008]. We have gathered a small number of additional names from other sources of persons who may be 1897 high school graduates, or more likely, honorary members of the BYA High School Class of 1897. Some very focused research is needed to find and document this high school class. 	B. Y. Academy Class of 1898. Current research [May 2008] has found four collegiate graduates, all four receiving the Bachelor of Pedagogy degree (B. Pd.) -- this is probably complete. However, Scott Cowley's 1898 research in the BYU Records Office documented only one BYA high school graduate, Clifford Goff, and it is likely that there are dozens of additional graduates. From a variety of sources we have found a total of 8 possible members of the class. More focused research is needed.

	Class of 1899. As inconceivable as it may seem, following research in the BYU Records Office, photograph files, newspapers and all other sources we can think of, we have been unable to find even one name of a Brigham Young Academy high school or collegiate graduate in the Class of 1899. We plead for help in reviewing all possible sources to locate the members of this class.

	B. Y. Academy Class of 1900. Current research [May 2008] has found the names of 12 BYA collegiate graduates, which is probably complete. However, we have not found the name of even one BYA high school graduate in the BYA records in the BYU Records Office. 1900 was in an era when there may have been between 50 and 100 high school graduates. We have found 11 likely or probable members of the BYA high school Class of 1900 in newspapers and other sources, but more focused research is needed.

	B. Y. Academy High School and Collegiate Class of 1901. To date [May 2008], Scott Cowley's research in BYA records in the BYU Records Office has documented 3 collegiate graduates, and 46 high school graduates, along with several possible honorary Class of 1901 members, including Maude McArthur Spilsbury, and they are also listed.

	B. Y. Academy High School and Collegiate Class of 1902. A combination of the names listed in the 1902 Commencement Program, and additional research in BYA/BYU records by Scott Cowley, has documented 6 collegiate graduates, and only 12 BYA high school graduates, in an era when graduating high school classes included 50 to 100 students. More focused research is needed.

	B. Y. Academy High School and Collegiate Graduates, Class of 1903. The end of the 1902-1903 academic year marked the historic end of Brigham Young Academy. Brigham Young Academy had included Kindergarten through 12th Grade, and two years of collegiate courses. The final class of BYA High School students and BYA Collegiate students graduated in the Spring of 1903. The Class of 1903 included 50 BYA high school graduates [89%], and 6 individuals who received BYA collegiate degrees [11%], plus 8 honorary members of the BYH Class of 1903. These numbers are subject to change if future research leads to the discovery of additional documented graduates. [August 2013] Footnote: It was not until 1906 that BYU began to require an additional year of college-level work, for a total of three years, to qualify for University graduation. In 1913 this requirement was increased to four years of higher education. During the 1903-1904 transition period, the three main groups of BYA high school / BY High School students were: 1. Commercial (Business Education). 2. Normal (preparing for the teaching profession). and 3. High School (general academic course of studies). Note the changes in names of high school departments by 1915: 1. Academic. 2. Agricultural. 3. Arts & Manual Training. 4. Business Education (Commercial). and 5. Music.

	Brigham Young High School, Class of 1904. The academic year of 1903-1904 marked the first official year of both Brigham Young University High School and Brigham Young University, after Brigham Young Academy was dissolved in June 1903, at the end of the 1903 academic year. Since 1876, Brigham Young Academy had always been a secondary school, with a relative handful of collegiate graduates. The 1904 graduating class, for example, included 5 BYU graduates [11%], and 41 BYHS graduates [89%]. Special thanks to Scott Cowley for research as of May 2008, and additional research done. [August 2013] In this Directory we have included BYU graduates from 1904 through 1935, because many of them were also BYA high school graduates, or BYHS graduates -- there is some overlap. 	Brigham Young High School Class of 1908 We currently have found 74 members of the BYH Class of 1908, based on the research of Scott Cowley in the BYU Records Office. The list appears to include all of the high school departments, including Commercial, Agriculture, Music, Normal, and High School Academic. We have found another handful of grads or honorary grads from various sources.
