Dr. W. Dwayne Belt

Nineteenth Principal
Brigham Young High School

Dr. W. Dwayne Belt served as the 19th Principal of BYH during the 1961-1962 academic year.

He came to BY High from Colorado. Dr. Belt added much to the success of BY High. His sense of humor and personality helped to create a friendly atmosphere.

Dwayne Belt was born in Burroak Township, Iowa, on August 9, 1929 to Wilbur and Ruth Clement Belt.

When he was 16, his family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. He spent his senior year there involved in drama, music and track, and was voted 'most versatile graduate'.

Dwayne attended BYU, where he participated in the band and on the track team, graduating with a BA in Music in 1952.

While at BYU, he was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Dwayne met Glenys Rollins in the clarinet section of the BYU Concert Band. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 25, 1952.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 until 1954.

Dwayne was a school teacher and principal in Lyman, Wyoming, then Evanston, Wyoming; after which he attended Northern Colorado University, where he received his masters and doctors degrees.

In 1961, Dr. Dwayne began to serve as Principal at B.Y. High School, through the 1961-1962 academic year.

He then transferred to BYU's College of Education, where he taught for 30 years.

Dr. Belt developed a plan for teaching his children about how to manage money, and shared his plan with many other families. His lesson plan can be found at Money Management on the lds.org website.

He served faithfully in church positions throughout his life, including missions with his wife to the Las Vegas, Nevada Mission, and to the St. George Temple Visitor's Center and historic sites.

He enjoyed being a member of the Orem Golden K Kiwanis Club. Dwayne loved sports and was an avid BYU, Utah Jazz and New York Yankees fan.

He also loved good music and was very proud of the musical and athletic accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.

He enjoyed a simple life - he was reliable, thrifty, punctual and orderly. He preferred a good hamburger and a malt to a filet mignon and a fancy dessert. His family adored him.

Dr. Dwayne Belt passed away from a sudden severe illness on September 14, 2007, at the age of 78. At the time of his death, he was Branch President at the Canyon Breeze Assisted Living Center in Orem.

Dwayne was survived by his wife, Glenys, of Orem; and his five children: Carol Belt [BYH Class of 1972~H] (Jon) Mitchell of Lehi; Connie Belt [BYH Class of 1973~H] (Jay) Jones, of Fairview, Texas; Terry (Hollie) Belt [BYH Class of 1975~H], of Orem; Shawna Belt [BYH Class of 1977~H] (John) Edwards, of Provo; Linda (Tom) Urquhart, of Orem; at the time of his passing he and his wife had 28 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was also survived by his siblings, David Belt, Jerry Belt, Jimmy Belt and Donna Belt, all of Las Vegas; and Peggy Belt Hoskin, of Cedar City, Utah.
